depressed, need music

been going through a number of extended bursts of depression lately, and have come close to exhausting my supply of suitable music.

typically in this stage, i listen to things like taking back sunday, dashboard confessional, and dave matthews band. i'm looking for some suggestions really of some bands that are similar to these bands or their style of music that I can listen to. hell, i guess any suggestion would honestly be appreciated. songs that are soothing and mellow. good lyrics are a huge bonus.

You should check out Morphine. The singer plays 2-string fretless bass, with a drummer and a sax player. It is soothing, but not in a boring way. The lyrics are very good, the singer, the late Mark Sandman (his real name) said he was more inspired by works of literature than other bands. Each and every one of my friends who have heard Morphine is a fan of theirs. I decided to not write about anyone else, just to give my choice of this band more weight.

Albumwise, I think "Good" and "Cure For Pain" are the best to get intoduced to. For individual songs, try these:

trust company - their cd isnt the usual emo punk, it is prob closer to unwritten law, but it has the right feel

Neon Ballroom is a great album. I recomend picking up the whole thing so I won't give any singles for it. (of course this doesn't mean the singles I do post are off of bad albums that aren't worth the purchase)

I find that if you've ever listened to music while doing something enjoyable (not wackin off) if you listen to it again, you will be put in a similar state of mind.

IE: I listened to the matrix soundtrack while reading every terry brooks book, now whenever i listen to any song from it, i am brought back to that world.

Looking at what you already listen to I would suggest a few:

Slow Reader (this one can be hard to find but it's an absolutely incredible album. A must for any emo-indie fan)
The Promise Ring-Woodwater (I love listening to this in the fall)

Also check out Portisheadummy and Morcheeba:Who can you trust? It's a different type of music (trip-hop) than what you mentioned but can be very enjoyable for what you are dealing with.

Me personally, I always retreat to Nine Inch Nails. But I'm a sadistic fuck and I like to exhaust my depression rather than ease out of it. Not that I disagree with your method, just explaining my own.

Wow, you all have had a lot of good suggestions. I refuse to use KaZaA or any of those services (not because I refuse to steal, but because I hate those services), so collecting this music has been a bit slow. The ones I have got I've liked a lot. Thanks for all the suggestions though, and keep em coming. This could probably prove useful to other people too, who knows.

So you're having bouts of depression... Why do you want to listen to mellow music?

This isn't really an album reccomendation, but rather a band.

I see you're in St Louis, Devnul. If only I had found this thread a few days earlier, I would have reccomended that you go and see Cowboy Mouth in concert, they were there just a few days ago, on the 30th of October, in Colombia I think it was... (is that close?)
Anyway, No matter how shitty I am feeling or tired or whatever, I always end up with an increased energy level of about 50x from before the show started. They put out so much energy during their live shows that you can't help but feeling great after you leave. It's an amazing natural high you get and any explination really doesn't do them justice if you haven't seen them in person. You just have to go and trust me on this.

Short of seeing them in person, I would reccomend their album "All You Need Is Live".

If you can't see them in person, then this album comes the closest to delivering that amazing energy and uplifiting feeling that you would otherwise get.

Off that album, or more specifically, listen to the song "Jenny Says" and if you're on Kazaa look for the "Live from the X-Lounge" version. It does wonders for your mood.
