The Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act (aka the RAVE Act)

for those who don't know about it and want some detail on what it is, I'd suggest http://www.emdef.org ... check out the latest one, as the RAVE Act has passed under the AMBER Alert Bill..

In short, the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act (previously known, and defeated, as the RAVE Act), hold Promoters / Venue Owners liable for the activities of it's patrons even if they do all they can to stop illegal activity.

The bill is "meant" to curb rogue promoters from hosting events where the sole purpose is to sell and use drugs... however, considering the context in which this bill is being applied (as an amendment to the Crack House law, which was unsuccessfully used to prosecute promoters last year), it's quite obvious that it will target pretty much any promoter that is not on good terms with a given government institution.

Sooooo.... I'm curious to know what the folks on this board think... as this is a very interesting mix of liberal and liberal conservatism (hehe)... all I ask is that you keep in mind that the way a law reads is out of context from the way it will be inforced, depending on the context of how it was introduced.
Again, the full text and history of the bill is at http://www.emdef.org

If you're in the Pacific Northwest, I'd suggest joinging the mailing list at http://www.nwlnc.org (NorthWest Late Night Coalition)

D'ya remember Fantazia? Maaaaaan that was a rave you could be proud of. Gone - GONE are the days when a field & a massive sound system could bring so much pleasure.
Fucking bastard government.

and it's exactly that kind of misinformation and stereotyping that is destroying this culture.
fuck the media, it's all their fault.
when I was younger, I saw 20/20's expose' on "raves", and thought they were all about drugs and sex... being a horny teenager, thanks to the media, I went to a rave expecting to get laid. Instead, I found great music. Since then I have been partying and dancing (sober!) ever since...

/end ramble

soo yah.... if anyone's in Seattle on May 31st, we're doing a free daytime rally with Miguel Migs, Infected Mushroom, and some other major names... there will be similar rallies all over the country - check your local listings.

I feel really bad for the promoters, I'm guessing this is going to discourage a lot of smaller places from having concerts because of the risk...that's going to make things hard for bands that can't fill the bigger venues.

i'm not even a rave person myself, but i think there's all sorts of shit wrong with this law - just like a lot of other similar ones....

(i could rant quite a bit here, but i think i'll spare everyone and just leave it at that)

Pulpmind, it sucks that they're trying to get that passed. Why should the promoters be held responsible for the actions of the individuals. But I do think that the promoter should be taking all possible means to try and stop the drug flow from going in.

Sadly, it was signed into law last week by good ol Dubya...
and I agree, the promoter should take every measure they reasonably can to prevent drug use. Unfortunatelly, judging from how the Crack House law was used against promoters the last couple years (which is the law that the RAVE Act ammends), it apparently doesn't matter if you have security at the door, and kick out people who are overdoing themselves, etc...
what a sad sick world...

on a lighter note... for anyone in Seattle... on May 31st, I'm putting together a rally in downtown, @ Westlake park, to voice against the RAVE act.
The best part is, it features superstar DJs all day long =)
if anyone actually cares about that on this board, say so, and I'll post more info!
