Old School Punk Fans

For all you old school punks out there, you know who you are (the ones who say "oi" and can't stand the new crap that is coming out labeled "punk"), I heard a really good band recently.

Anti Nowhere League- I believe they are out of the late 70's/early 80's, and I really like them. I heard one song of theirs on Netscape radio and bought a teeshirt and cd off ebay.

If you have not heard them, I reccomend that you look into them.

If you have heard them, do you have any interesting information on them for me?

Cynthetiq 11-24-2003 02:34 PM

not heard of them... I'll keep an eye out for them...but you should check out a local Brooklyn band...

www.stupidband.com

they are pretty fun to see live and they have some catchy tunes.

costello 11-24-2003 03:13 PM

the singer is an aquired taste, his name is animal i believe, but i listened to Anti Nowhere League back in the day. it was a teenage rebellion kinda thing i imagine ... looking back on it the lyrics were pretty obscene but the music is good ol' punk rock, maybe a mockery of it.

if you like them heres a few suggestions of stuff you may or may not have heard:

U.K. Subs
The Misfits
The Clash
Agent Orange
The Adicts
Cockney Rejects
Agnostic Front
Oxymoron
Circle Jerks
Skeptix
The Buisiness
Dropkick Murphys
Rancid
Buzzcocks
Joy Division
Crass
Fear
Bad Brains

some of those go without saying, im just tryin to think of stuff i was into that could be classified as old school or just real punk. hope that helps

sadistikdreams 11-24-2003 05:37 PM

OI! I love them.

Rubyee 11-24-2003 06:06 PM

Actually, Costello, I have heard all of those bands, and have also seen some of them in concert. I like most of them, but the Dropkick Murphys have not been good since the loss of the original singer.

Also, another SoCal fav of mine The Descendents will be dropping a new EP in January and then a full-length in March.

I have heard rumors of them and also Dag Nasty on this upcoming summer's Warped Tour. ...a must attend now! (as was 97? when Social D and the Descendents played)

carpal 11-25-2003 02:22 PM

Man, that list brings back a ton of memories. It's been a while since I really listened to any punk rock. Now I'm going to have to go home and dig through my CDs.

Jadey 11-26-2003 10:44 PM

I'm another big fan of the Cockney Rejects. Also, the Misifts. But a few more not yet mentioned that I've liked are Gang Green, The Templars (Ok, so they haven't been around that long), The Dickies, Gang of Four. And what about Bad Religion? Why haven;t they been mentioned yet!?!

sk8renigma 11-27-2003 08:46 PM

How about soem more 'core bands-
The casulties, virus, unseen, minority, total chaos, a global threat
Or some of the newer but still awesome bands-
antiflag, pennywise, propagandhi
And finally, old favorites
nofx(don't flame me), operation ivy, dead kennedy's

h2ogo69 11-30-2003 10:39 AM

social distortion is great... but i love the clash i feel they are the best punk band ever... plus im glad i saw someone mention the bad brains

oh and oxymoron kix ass

im one f the few ppl i know who likes core bands but hates the casualties... i cant stand them i get the feeling they spend more time on their hair then their music... it seems empty to me

Skettios 11-30-2003 11:02 PM

Rancid is touring! Rancid is touring!

(dances around)

KWSN 12-01-2003 07:31 AM

Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Fear, Minor Threat, and Black Flag are the definitive set of old-school punk bands if you ask me. Without them, we wouldn't have ANY of the hardcore of today.

Anybody dig Nailbomb? One of Max Cavalera's early bands. Its about as death metal as punk can be.

HeadyIncognito 12-09-2003 10:06 PM

Oi Polloi is one of my favorites. Erm... I also like Dirt... Aus-Rotten... Conflict is pretty good... Flux of Pink Indians... OH YEAH, Riot-Clone, theyīre great... I canīt believe that the SubHumAns havenīt been mentioned... Nausea is pretty good... Blitz... Chaos UK... The Partisans...

Thatīs a pretty nice list. I have more, though.

chingador 12-11-2003 11:49 PM

Nobody has mentioned Crass yet. Great band. They really lived up to being "punk" - they felt that if they hadn't self-destructed by 1984 that they would break up, and held true to their word. Great politically-charged songs, the way early 80s punk should have been.

they were actually the first real anarchist punk band 2 the sex pistols were posers about the anarchy thing

TheClarkster 12-13-2003 10:07 PM

Gotta love DK.
And I can never get enough of The Misfits.

thespian86 12-14-2003 03:21 PM

I think that it isn't fair to say that the new punk is "Crap". I grew up (teen years) in the new punk of the nintys and I listen to it now. Sure i love the old days when punk was original but this isn't the punk like you remember it. This might still have the same message but this is for a new generation of kids who feel like they don't have a voice. In fact the other day i bought five cds.

The Artists were:

Lagwagon
Slickshoes
Millencollin
Rancid
and Blink 182

I was surprised by the heightened darkness and serious maturity from the group. I recommend it. But these bands give a voice to those who don't and they still do the same thing they did for you. It might not sound the same but punk is the attitude and not the music you play. And your saying that the attitude is different when its not at all.

I agree that the music has changed the way it is played but it is the same idea, punk. Thanks

Jesus Pimp 12-16-2003 09:48 PM

Joy Divison is punk? That's new to me.

SSJTWIZTA 12-18-2003 04:07 PM

Gotta love DK, a global threat, lower class brats, Storm Troopers of Death, The Adicts and The Runn-a-Mucks
oh, and OI!

They grew up litterally down the street from me (in Fullerton) and my sister told me they would play at backyard parties even when they were already big :). Gotta love em. You could always spot them hanging out at Classic Tattoo.

Cardinal Syn 12-21-2003 08:56 PM

I really enjoy Operation Ivy.
Always have Minor Threat near by
Screaching Weasel ...
7 Seconds.
Down by Law.

Basically all of Epitph bands. -- or however ya spell it.

But that was back in my day in Florida.
Could add alof of ska to, But were talking about Punk :>

I consider my self alittle old skool. But dont really listen to much of it anymore.

h2ogo69 12-25-2003 07:25 PM

screaching weasel - i wanna be a homosexual is the greatest punk song ever

peeweesbigbong 12-26-2003 10:11 PM

my cousin used to hang out with social distortion back when they were all just young teenies, he hates Mike Ness with a passion because once they were pulled over and the pigs found a little more that a pound of heroin in the car which belonged to Mike Ness and he didnt claim it, so my cousins friend who was driving took the rap. he's still in jail to this day cause of that rock n roll asshole.

oh yea, and its nice to hear others who dont put up with this new 'seventeen magazine' punk rock BS that being played on the radio now.

cjvasco 12-27-2003 09:39 PM

The Adverts
UK Subs
Oi Polloi
The Vibrators
The Specials
The Kicks

My favorites, I hope they are some of yours.

I know - I believe the proper tag is 'postpunk' such as Gang of Four & even the fucking Cure.

monkeydriven 01-07-2004 05:53 AM

X Ray Spex

As for the question of whether Joy Division is punk,
Well the brilliant new box set, "No Thanks! The 70's Punk Rebellion" includes some Joy Division...so guess they are considered punk...

HunterDevourer 01-07-2004 06:12 AM

Heh...I'm into a few of the old school punk bands, but you're forgetting the rock n roll terrorist...GG Allin!

silent_jay 01-07-2004 10:34 PM

The Clash is the only band that matters - according tothe J-man on the radio station in Ottawa, i love the Clash

docbungle 01-07-2004 11:22 PM

Bad Brains and Minor Threat. True old school.

notaneel 02-01-2004 11:59 PM

How about Rocket From the Tombs, Pere Ubu, and the Dead Boys (RFTT/2 = PU and tDBs...Ohio represent), the Avengers, Wire, X, the Adolescents, or the Germs? Just some more bands to throw into the fray.

lucidity 02-07-2004 05:24 PM

I can't believe that Black Flag only got one mention. Shame on you all. :)

phlox 02-08-2004 11:40 AM

I just can't get into the Clash. And yeah, I think of Joy Division as 'post punk' sort of.

Anyone like the Hospitals? They're from portland, I think, and they're amazing.

nofnway 02-10-2004 06:09 PM

DRI anyone?

Black flag rules

the clash too

The Dickies

Minor threat

Agent orange...for sure

Loved The Ramones....saw them with social distortion on 21st birthday

Fear

D.O.A. awesome show in early 80's
