Sublime- 40oz
Eagles- Tequila Sunrise
Doobie Brothers- Black Water
ZZ Top- Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers

Well I'll be... Thanks for the correction, P2P is where I ran accross it and it turns out that it's not Phish doing it. I only have a couple Phish albums so I'm not all that familiar with them, but The Gourds sounded a lot like them to me at the time. I'll have to go back and have another listen now.

*bump* time for a new topic...Derwood?

Derwood 12-30-2003 05:26 PM

Yeah, I guess so....

Anyone have any ideas? I don't want to monopolize the topic ideas

high_way 12-30-2003 06:31 PM

how bout top 5 songs from a particular decade, or top 5 songs about death .....

oh how about top 5 worst songs ever made, just for a bit of a spin on things

Derwood 12-31-2003 02:05 PM

The first two are too broad. We can do the Worst songs one though. You start.

high_way 12-31-2003 04:58 PM

ok ummm

1 - mmm bop - hanson
2 - that bloody austrlian idol song - rise up
3 - 50c - in da club

i know there are a lot worse out there but because they are bad i try not to remember them

brandon11983 01-01-2004 04:27 PM

Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart
Creed - Higher
that "Roll Out" song
Evanescence - Bring Me To Life
Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes... this song deserves a one way ticket to hell for covering such an awesome tune by The Who

sherpahigh 01-03-2004 03:00 PM

hmmm...Just off the top of my head I'd have to go with:

Who let the dogs out
Macarena
Anything by Creed
hanson - mmm bop
Fountains of Wayne - Stacey's Mom

Derwood 01-03-2004 03:09 PM

- Macarena for sure
- Who let the dog's out
- That fucking Lifehouse song they played the shit out of for a year.
- "How you remind me" - Nickelback
- The ENTIRE Good Charlotte catalog

5)Crazy Town - Butterfly

Man, good call on Crazy Town. I hate that fucking song

Tophat665 01-05-2004 08:06 AM

This is an awesome thread. Please indulge me while I catch up.

Worst Songs of all time:
1 Baha-men: Who Let The Dogs Out
2 Las Ketchup: Aseraje (The Ketchup Song, or The Merciless Butchery of Rapper's Delight in an act of cruelty unparallelled in Spanish since the Auto de Fe)
3 Los Del Rio: Macarena (not really their fault. It was the goddamn dance that did it.)
4 Aerosmith: Pink (worst poetry ever. "Pink as the sheets that we lay on/Pink is my favorite cray on.")
5 Limp Bizkit: Nookie (and the worst part of it is that it grows on one.)

Songs with beverages in the title
1 Rev. Horton Heat - Martini Time
2 Traditional - Whisky in the Jar (Metallica version)
3 Reel Big Fish - Beer
4 Phish - Bathtub Gin
5 Blue Öyster Cult - Perfect Water
Note that Phish has covered Gin & Juice, as has Widespread Panic, and bootlegs of it might appear on P2P networks, but by and large the one people get is the Gourds version.

Live ALbums
1 Jethro Tull - Bursting Out Live
2 Blue Öyster Cult - Some Enchanted Evening
3 Frank Zappa - The Best Band You Never Heard
4 King Crimson - Unpronounceable (probably was a bootleg, so I may be the only one here who's heard of it)
5 Tom Waits - Nighthawks at the Diner

With Color in the title
1 King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (it's just another word for red)
2 Steve Vai - Blue Powder
3 Moody Blues - Knights in White Satin
4 Jethro Tull - The Rainbow Blues
5 Fine Young Cannibals - Blue

Ballads
1 Jethro Tull - Later that Same Evening
2 Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland
3 Traditional - Whiskey in the Jar
4 Blue Öyster Cult - Astronomy (or Black Blade)
5 King Crimson - The Night Watch

Covers
1 The Gourds - Gin & Juice (Snoop Dogg)
2 Metallica - Whisky in the Jar (Thin Lizzy (Traditional))
3 Megadeth - These Boots (Nancy Sinatra)
4 801 - Tomorrow Never Knows (Beatles)
5 Fine Young Cannibals - Suspicious Minds (Elvis)

Track 1
1 Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery - Title cut
2 Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction - Welcome to the Jungle
3 Cake - Comfort Eagle - Opera Singer
4 Pink Floyd - The Wall - In the Flesh?
5 Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers - Knocking at your Back Door

Derwood, here's some more ideas: Top 5-
1 Songs whose title does not occur in the refrain.
2 Songs performed by female lead singers
3 Most insulting songs
4 Songs with one word titles
5 Songs longer than 6½ minutes
6 Songs containing words that can't be played on the radio
7 Weird Al songs (or any other single artist)
8 Songs that Weird Al (or Richard Cheese, or Hayseed Dixie, or some parody band) should do
9 Cross Style Covers
10 Songs about Cats/Dogs/Politicians/Lawyers
11 Songs describing a sex/criminal act
12 Longest Song Titles
13 Upbeat songs about depressing things
14 Song or album titles that would be improved by replacing one of the words in the title with pants/sausage/penis
15 Songs that are spoken rather than sung (Other than Rap)
16 Songs that mention the Devil by name
17 Combustion related songs
18 Songs about celestial objects
19 Songs that mention specific weapons
20 Albums with the best covers

Hey TopHat - great catching up, love your picks!

Are you sure about that? When I was looking into it I ran across a phish FAQ that said they had never done a cover of it. I know they've done covers of Gettin Jiggy wit it' and others, but the FAQ said no Gin & Juice.

Not 100% sure. I had thought that I had heard that from a real Phishhead, though. I'll ask her to confirm and let me know which show(s), and then I'll see what I can do about cross referencing with a couple of former tapers I know.

burnhm 01-05-2004 11:46 AM

As a self-proclaimed real phan, I will say with complete certainty, that Phish has never covered Gin and Juice.

Oof. Now I see what I said wrong. If you read "a real Phishhead" to mean, "As opposed to you", I am very sorry. I meant it as opposed to me. I know one of the Phunky bitches fairly well, and I was going to ask her.

However, if you are way up on it, then let's assume I was wrong for now. My mistake. Sorry.

No no no. I wasn't taking offense to it or anything. I was just chiming in with what it is. I wasn't trying to be a dick or anything about that and I hope there's no hard feelings.

Alright, drawing a new topic from that greeat list of suggestions:

Top 5 Songs whose title does not appear in any of the lyrics

sherpahigh 01-08-2004 08:32 PM

4. The Who - A Quick One, While He's Away

Here's one...

Top 5 Songs that Johnny Cash has covered that AREN't "Hurt"

Tophat665 01-22-2004 09:28 AM

Toughie!

1) (Ghost Riders) In the Sky (Vaughn Monroe)
2) A Boy Named Sue (Shel Silverstein)
3) Daddy Sang Bass (Carl Perkins)
4) Ring of Fire (Ann Carter? Arguable, as it may have been June Carter, and, if a guy's wife writes a song for him to sing, is it really a cover? Stellar song anyway.)
5) Wanted Man (Bob Dylan)

So I was looking around to remind myself which songs of his are actually covers, and I ran across this little gem in a different forum on a thread about Johnny's cover of Hurt:
Quote:

It could have been worse. Johnny Cash might have covered "Closer" instead. The prospect of Johnny Cash telling you that he wants to fuck you like an animal is too scary to contemplate.

Derwood 01-22-2004 01:28 PM

Here's mine:

- Mercy Seat (Nick Cave)
- Highway Patrolman (Bruce Springsteen)
- One (U2)
- I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Hank Williams Sr.)
- In My Life (Lennon/McCartney)

rockzilla 01-22-2004 04:45 PM

Rusty Cage - Soundgarden
Rowboat - Beck
Ghost Riders In The Sky - Vaughn Monroe
I Hung My Head - Sting
Won't Back Down - Tom Petty

That looks about right, and it's the only time you'll see Sting in one my lists outside of The Police.

hawkeye 01-22-2004 05:36 PM

Ghost Riders In The Sky - Vaughn Monroe
Bridge over Troubled Waters - Simon and Garfunkel

Godspeed You Black Emperor - Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls

I think they were responding to the thread's very first question.

I can't think of enough 15+ minute songs for this week.

Tophat665 02-07-2004 09:15 AM

OK, 15 minute+

0) Beethoven's 9th, by the Academy of Ancient Music at St. Martin in the Fields.
1) Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick (Whole LP)
2) Yes - Close to the Edge (18:50)
3) Jethro Tull - Baker St. Muse (16:23, I think)
4) Frank Zappa - The Torture Never Stops (17+ minutes on You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol 1)
5) Dweezil Zappa - My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama (17½ minutes on Automatic, I think.)

Well that's 5 (plus a bit of the old Lugwig Van), but let me throw out a few more in case anyone wants to track them down and verify:

The Allman Brothers: Mountain Jam is over 20 minutes long on Eat a Peach, and I'm sure there is at least one live version of another of their songs, probably Elizabeth Reed or Jessica, or Whippin Post, on one of the live Fillmore CDs.

The Grateful Dead - Have put together some mind bendingly long jams in their time, and I'm sure at least one of the better ones - probably a "That's it for the Other One" or a "Terrapin Station" has made it onto a commercially available disc.

Phish - I know I have heard them play a "Stash" that was over 20 minutes long, at Nissan Pavillion in the mid 90s.

Arlo Guthrie - Isn't Alice's Restaurant over 15?

burnhm 02-07-2004 03:55 PM

You Enjoy Myself by Phish off of A Live One
Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd
Motherfucker = Redeemer by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Close to the Edge by Yes
Help on the Way>SlipKnot>Franklin's Tower by Grateful Dead

- Atom Heart Mother Suite - Pink Floyd
- Echoes - Pink Floyd
- Dogs - Pink Floyd
- Disc 1, Track 2 - GSYBE (Lift your Tiny Fists....)
- Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-9 - Pink Floyd (Ok, I cheated a little there).

BulletBob 02-10-2004 01:17 PM

The Decline - NoFX
Echoes - Pink Floyd
Close To The Edge - Yes
Tuesday Night In Berlin - Red Hot Chili Peppers (Okay so it's 14:22, i'm cheating a little here)
Three Days - Jane's Addiction (Cheating a lot here because it's only 10:47)

Derwood 02-10-2004 03:58 PM

Two days since the last and off the front page. Hmmm.

Top 5 Songs adapted from or otherwise about specific books (name the book too, please)

Gortexfogg 02-29-2004 09:32 AM

2. "The Hobbit Song" by Leonard Nemoy based off of The Hobbit
3. "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan based off of the Bible
4. "O Holy Night" by whoever based off of the Bible
5. "Highway 61 Revisited" by Bob Dylan based off of the Bible

Tophat665 02-29-2004 08:30 PM

ALrighty! A taker.

1. Rush - Anthem (Ayn Rand - Anthem)
2. Blue Öyster Cult - They Have Killed the Great Sun Jester (Michael Moorcock, "Von Bek and the Fireclown" in the Roads between worlds anthology.)
3. Blue Öyster Cult - Transmaniacon MC (the author escapes me, but it is a pulp sci-fi novel named Transmaniacon)
4. Counting Crows - Rain King (again, the author has slipped my mind, but the book is Henderson and the Rain King.)
5. Anthrax - Among the Living (Stephen King - The Stand)

(Edited to replace Duran Duran with Anthrax)

rockzilla 03-02-2004 10:13 AM

I've been giving this a fair bit of thought and I can't really think of that many, I may come back and edit this later though.

Rush - 2112 - (Ayn Rand - Anthem)
Tragically Hip - Courage (For Hugh Maclennan) - (Hugh Maclennan - The Watch that Ends The Night)
Mad Season - River of Deceit (Kalil Ghibran - The Prophet)
Led Zeppelin - Ramble On (Has some Tolkein references)
Rush - Rivendell - (more Tolkein)

Derwood 03-03-2004 07:33 PM

I can't think of anything for this one, so as the starter of this topic, I'll change the subject ;)

Top 5 great songs that are from otherwise crappy albums

You know, those songs that you buy the whole album for and never listen to the rest (at least that's what you did before filesharing). Remember, the rest of the album has to suck!

rockzilla 03-03-2004 07:58 PM

Rolling Stones - She's So Cold (Emotional Rescue)
Tears For Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love (The Seeds of Love)
Rush - Distant Early Warning (Grace Under Pressure)
Brian Adams - The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You (18 'Til I Die)
U2 - Staring at the Sun (Pop)

Derwood 03-04-2004 08:07 AM

Queen - Another One Bites the Dust (Hot Space)
Dead Milkmen - Big Deal (Stoney's Extra Stout)
Primus - Fisticuffs (The Brown Album)
Reverend Horton Heat - The Jimbo Song (Space Heater)
Public Enemy - By the Time I get to Arizona (Apocalypse 91)

kl0pper 03-27-2004 04:15 AM

underrated:
alan holdsworth
paul leary
duane denison
robert fripp
john fahey

overrated:
buckethead
jimmy page
frank zappa (as a guitar player)
Yngwie Malmsteen
slash

Tophat665 03-27-2004 07:52 AM

OK,
Underrated (I was thinking about this one):

1. Marc Ribot (Lead on Tom Wait's albums - check Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs.)
2. Walter Becker (The opening solo on Don't Take Me Alive is one of the best ever.)
3. Robert Fripp
4. Alex Lifeson (suffers by comparison to his bandmates)
5. Pete Townsend (best Rhythm guitarist ever)

Overrated
1. Eddie Van Halen
2. Joe Satriani (Still love his music, though)
3. Angus Young (Rated accurately as a character, overrated as a guitarist)
4. Alex Lifeson (The rest of his band elevates him. Yep - he's on both lists.)
5. Jimmy Page and Keith Richards.

Just Right
1. Zappa
2. Clapton
3. Vai
4. Malmsteen
5. SRV

No, never have. If I were a guitarist, though, I'd worry about getting beseiged by the Roman legion if I played one, though?

id put hendrix on that list
OK, put him #1, leave Stevie Ray on the bottom, and knock Yngwie off. Jimi was in such a class by himself that I didn't even think of him.
