MTV2's 22 Greatest Bands...
 

So the show was hosted by Rikki Rachman and it was a list of the 22 greatest bands of the past 2 decades I believe as chosen by "the fans" well lets just say most of the time "the fans" suck ass. Granted that the list wasn't as bad as some other "Greatest" lists I've seen in the past but still has a few that really don't deserve to be in there, shoulda been higher, and some who were just plain left out and forgotten about all together. They did get some pretty cool bands on there that aren't normally on these kinds of lists so thats kinda cool. Well here it is starting from the bottom up.

Well lotta great bands on there but fuckin No Doubt?! I'm sorry I just don't think they are as good as some of the many bands who didn't make the list at all. Heres just a few ya didn't see

Shit the list goes on with loads of bands they didn't give any mention to that are better than some of the ones that made the list. For instance you got Korn on there already so you don't need fuckin Limp Bizkit there they're pretty much just Korn with bad rap. I dunno if I personally woulda put Linkin Park on my list ahead of some of those others mentioned/not mentioned though I do think they're a pretty damn good band I mighta had them on but definitely not borderline top 5. Well asside from all that the good thing is there aren't too many not so good bands on there. Only a few tops the rest are all either great or pretty/pretty damn good. So what are your thoughts on this list?

Overall the list looks good aside from a few bands. I don't think Dave Matthews Band is good, but that's just my opinion.

I like Dave cause the arangement of the band is awesome and I think he's a good singer songwriter. But yeah like I said pretty good list I think most would agree with the bulk of the list minus maybe a select few they don't like.

How the fuck did Limp Bizkit and No Doubt get on the 22 Greates Bands list?!? Bah, just goes to show MTV has no clue what they're talking about.

Let me remind all of you that MTV is the same people who feel that their very own Carson Daily is an icon :lol: What a joke this list is!

it amuses me that you even care about this mtv bullcrap. they have to pander to a certain audience, therefore leaving the bands that deserve to be on that list left out. if it was me, there'd probabaly be 3 or 4 of those bands on that top 25 list. funniest of all i think is that they put green day up there and not operation ivy. eh :P

I dont watch MTV. I did way back in the day when they played nothing but music. Dont really care what they consider MTV's Greatest Bands.

Hey...Phish are a fantastic band man. Don't downplay the Phish homie ;). Some more bands they didn't give any props to.

Some bands are popular because they are innovative & creative, some are highly technically skilled, some are great showmen, some are excellent lyrically.

Bottom line is, we like what sounds good to us.
Arguing in generalities (they suck, etc.) about which band is better than the next is pointless.
You're not going to get a person who either loves/hates a band to change his/her mind.

Where's Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? They've made albums and videos in the last 2 decades and are better than over 3/4 of the bands on that list...

my fucking big gripe is that a list of the 22 greatest bands of the past two decades should include bands that have been around for at least half that time....Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit. how long have they been around, 5 years or so.

And, no Rage, Tool, Deftones...that makes no sense.
Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Korn, No Doubt, Oasis, and Green Day should not have made it. its ridiculous. IMO these bands just road the wave of the fads of the time to rise to stardom.

I think Oasis are pretty great musically but 1 imparticular is a jackass snob who thinks he's the shit. It was funny when they listed em though cause they showed like 6 guys even Ian Robinson compare them to The Beatles...they just flashed em one by one "Beatles...beatles...Beatles...Beatles..." then it gets to Jim Bruer and it pauses for a sec. "The Beatles? Oasis ain't the fuckin Beatles nobody is the beatles but The Beatles" or something like that. I damn near fell out of my chair.

Stupid ass MTV and their stupid ass list, no way the 'fans' put some of these bands on there oh no, these bands paid off MTV for recognition because they know thats the only recognition they'll ever get as far as being one of the 'greatest' bands ever.

Whoa now...do not talk bad about the Aerosmith. Their most recent stuff might not be amazing but that band is one a the best I've ever heard. Dream On, Janies Got A Gun, Crazy, Cryin, Don't Wanna Miss A Thing, Fly Away From Here, Livin On The Edge, Walk This Way, Dude Looks Like A Lady, Amazing, etc. all great songs, fun songs. Great band Joe Perry is an awesome guitarist and Steven Tyler has madd pipes. Even more amazing is the fact that he can still sing just as good today as he could 30 years ago which is crazy. I think to myself "Theres no way he can still hit those notes on Dream On at his age" and then he does it almost even better than he did the first time. Crazy shit.

I don't get nirvana. To me, they had a couple of songs. Foo Fighters is better then Nirvana. Hole is better then Nirvana. He was an anchor tied to the neck of radio, and I am sick of his same old whiny songs playing on the radio so many years later. He sucked on a shotgun. That does not make his music great. It just weakens the power of his musical message. Cowards commit suicide. Couragous people strive to make things better. Fuck Him.

This stupid ass list just a reminder, not that I needed one, why I don't watch MTV. It's pop culture is enough to make me want to hurl. Some bands on this list shouldn't even make a top 500 list. What a fucking joke.

The worst part about it is it was picked by "The Fans" I know I didn't fuckin pick Limp Biscuit and No Doubt. Other than those 2 which really fuckin suck I think Greenday and Linkin Park are 2 good bands...possibly really good but not fuckin top 20 of the last 2 decades of music. Other than those I think all the other bands on the list are great though(Oasis are still kinda iffy with me though) I would have changed the order around a shit load. This just proves these fans are strictly T.V. fans and fad fans. Cause only MTV would forget how fuckin great Tom Petty, The Counting Crows, Train, The Rolling Stones, Tool, Silverchair, etc. are and stop playing their fuckin videos. Linkin Park are on MTV all the time so of course they were voted onto the list. Eh stupid fuckin choices I'd like to know who these "Fans" are so I can shove records down their fuckin throats.

watch the vh1 top 100 bands of all time....they did a far better job...zeppelin was 1...i think cream was like 2, van halen 7. they might have actually done some research. if you get a chance watch it.

Yeah I saw the VH1 list. And it wasn't the hundred greatest bands of all time it was the Hundred greatest "hard rock" bands of all time. If it was just greatest bands period ya know they prolly woulda voted the fuckin beatles #1 instead a Zep. That one was a good list but it was also an all time list not the last 2 decades. And I believe Black Sabath was #2 to Zepplin and Cream was #4 I'm not sure. It sounds right. I tend to like VH1's lists more than I like MTV's except for VH1's stupid asses voting Eminem's "Lose Yourself" the #4 fuckin greatest song OF ALL TIME! I think thats a crock a shit. That isn't even the best rap song of the past 10 years let alone of all time. That really pissed me off. I hate how he gets all the credit it absolutely sickens me.

Like I said in the greatest guitar players post. It's because Nirvana is a "safe choice" Nirvana is one band everyone can agree on...or everyone doesn't have the heart to not agree on because he's dead. So lord forbid they don't put them #1. I personally like Pearl Jam better but I'm not too vexed at Nirvana being #1 cause I thought they actually were pretty damn good. And you gotta be really good first then die before you get considered the greatest. Ex: Drowning Pool....they just started out....guy died...very sad but they don't get any band nominations.

Nirvana the #1 band?! I wonder if anybody else sees anything wrong with this. I mean, they wrote some good music, but they are FAR from the best band of the past 2 decades. Kurt Cobain wasn't even half as talented as everybody hypes him up to be.

21. Van Halen Talented guitarist, top 22 worthy? No.
20. Limp Bizkit Disgusting, but worthy of the list because they have done a lot for/to modern music.
19. Phish Psshaw!!
18. Alice In Chains Excellent band of the mid 90's. Worthy of the ist.
17. Dave Mathews Band No.
16. Korn Apalling. But again, they are one of the MOST influential bands out there. Look at all the copy cats.
15. Aerosmith Robbed!! Should be top 10!
14. Oasis Good band. Not top 22 material though.
13. The Cure Top 10 for sure.
12. Nine Inch Nails Waaaay robbed. Top 5
11. Smashing Pumpkins Good stuff, top 20.
10. No Doubt I really like Rock Steady, but musically, it is nothing out of the ordinary.

My honest and I am sure unpopular opinion:

Phish is the best band on this list. Their music is complex and amazing, not easily digested by the masses. They actually have the ability to improvise, something missing from most groups these days. You won't catch these guys playing the same set of three minute songs night after night.

Are you sure this isn't the list of bands with the most air time? Definately not the all time greatest bands list. It's missing way too many great artist.

Oh and by the way... some INCREDIBLE artists got COMPLETELY stiffed here... I think personally that the Smiths could take most of the bands on the list... and if this list was supposed to be about INFLUENCE, where are the Sex Pistols? Dead Kennedys? Bad Brains? Minor Threat? Anything that's even a slight derivative of 'punk' that's on the airwaves today owe their careers in large part to at least one of those bands. A lot of other underground bands influenced music like NO OTHER that aren't on the list. Sunny Day Real Estate gave birth to all of the 'emo' music that's so popular today...

Other bands that I'd (personally) put on the list:
SLAYER (best metal band ever? Probably.)
AT THE DRIVE-IN (Not the most popular band ever, but just listen to their music, it's the most innovative stuff out there, the Mars Volta are following right where they left off. Not to mention ATDI had the best stage show EVER. Trust me.)
BECK (Ok, I'm probably gonna get flamed for this one. But I think he's the best songwriter in the last 20 years, and has produced some of the best music, not to mention most influential on the 'indie' scene)
SNAPCASE (Completely biased opinion on my part, as they're one of my favorites, but I think they have the best lyrics and music of any band out there)
GLASSJAW (See Snapcase's description)
THE WHITE STRIPES (Yes, this is an unpopular opinion, with all the 'they have no talent blah blah blah' bullshit out there, but you have to realize that for one thing they have INCREDIBLE lyrics (all written by Meg, for all those that think she has no talent), and Jack is an OUTSTANDING musician, you really have to be a guitarist and see them live to understand how good he is... singing and soloing at the same time is just about the most difficult thing you can do in music. He makes it look simple)

Music television my ass. Marketing television, now your talkin'. Aside from the Chili Peppers, Radiohead, The Cure, NIN, Guns & Roses, and an honorable mention of Nirvana, Aerosmith, and Phish. I'll file this list under "kids who buy the hype's top 22 picks."
