Bands you just don't get...

I don't like alot of bands, but I can see why other people like them. There are 2 bands that stand out that I just cannot comprehend why anyone likes them. They are Coldplay and Radiohead.

I don't have anything against them, but I just don't get it.

What bands don't you get?

forseti-6 09-07-2003 05:54 AM

I just don't get Good Charlotte and why they are so popular....

hersickmother 09-07-2003 06:42 AM

glassjaw, all American rejects, bright eyes, dashboard confessionals, finch, Thursday and their kin.
It's not that I think the music is bad, I just don't understand the devotion they inspire. To fully appreciate them I think you have to middle class and have a self obsession boarding on mental illness.

Nimbletoe 09-07-2003 07:18 AM

I was gonna say Good Charlotte too. I really, really dont understand it.

drewg 09-07-2003 08:45 AM

I don't get what the heck people like about 50 Cent. To me 50 Cent just sounds like a poor/below average rapper with rather lousy lyrics.

Ok, I admit I'm not really into rap, so perhaps I'm not the right person to judge...

Nimbletoe 09-07-2003 09:04 AM

I also don't see even how Lizzie McGuire fans like Hillary Duffs music. I've heard better noises come out of my ass. (sorry if your a fan... im really into singing though and singers that don't deserve music fame piss me off).

Spektr 09-07-2003 10:03 AM

Bjork. I think she is absolutely insane, and maybe has two good songs, but most people seem to revere her as some kind of goddess of music.

i've been thinking the same exact thing for a long time hahaha

K-Wise 09-07-2003 11:25 AM

Well with Coldplay and Radiohead they're just different. Coldplay write really good poppy songs with emotional lyrics that touch people on a pretty deep level (not really myself I just think it sounds great) and with Radiohead people give them major props because they have a knack for reinventing themselves and doing all kinds of crazy experimentation and getting away with it cause they can usually pull it off. 50 Cent isn't anything special you don't have to be a rap fan to notice that his lyrics aren't the best out there. I acctually love Bjork. She's made some really great stuff and she has a great set of pipes. I like Auraura(sp?), Hidden Place, All Is Full Of Love...I don't own any of her records but I'd like to. As far as all these fuckin punk bands that might as well all be one group I can't stand any of them. I guess the artists I just don't get why people like would have to be....umm....Disturbed...yes I can't stand those dudes among other bands they're just the one I could think of off the top.

Asta!!

Derwood 09-07-2003 11:39 AM

Tori Amos
Bruce Springsteen
50 cent
Good Charlotte
Norah Jones

Nimbletoe 09-07-2003 11:45 AM

I can't believe I forgot.. John Mayer! HE CAN'T SING!

Flippy 09-07-2003 11:54 AM

Good Charlotte and Nelly Furtado. I just don't understand why Nelly Furtado's somewhat whiny singing voice is so popular ;)

bulakbol master 09-07-2003 12:05 PM

Good Charlotte because they are the Horsemen of the Musical Apocalypse.

Disturbed, Linkin Park, any of the "nu-metal" stuff.

All the up-and-coming bands who are trying to pass off the image that they define punk and by doing so are destroying it. Bastards.

God of Thunder 09-07-2003 12:12 PM

I've never understood the facination with the Dave Matthews Band. He can't sing and they can't play, but tons of people like em. I just can't figure it out.

K-Wise 09-07-2003 12:16 PM

THEY CAN'T PLAY???? Whoa sorry but those guys are some of the best musicians in at least America if not the whole world.

Asta!!

Mr. Spacemonkey 09-07-2003 12:17 PM

Here is a band i REALLY don't understand whatsoever :

SLIPKNOT! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!

They scare me just a little bit.

edit: oh and uh marylin manson . . . yeah, i really don't get him either.

cjvasco 09-07-2003 12:42 PM

Bjork
Tori Amos

JazzmanAl 09-07-2003 01:36 PM

Linkin Park.. what is the deal with these guys?

Nimbletoe 09-07-2003 02:15 PM

If you can ignore the fact all their songs sound the same, and the lead singer singing is all studio produced (ever hear him live? no vocal cords could survive a concert of his), they're not bad.

:D

hoochman 09-07-2003 02:53 PM

Beck, I guess I just don't see the "Genius", Moby, I liked the instrumental stuff on "Everything is Wrong" but his pop songs are just lame (IMO), As for Slipknot, a good friend of mine summed it up when we saw them live "I don't know what it is, but there sure is a lot of it!"

gallopingwanker 09-07-2003 03:23 PM

yes i dont get what the big deal about him is either, people always sing his songs, he has a dumb voice and is very boring, cant wrap, in fact i hate him;)

BulletBob 09-07-2003 04:32 PM

I don't get Tool

maximusveritas 09-07-2003 04:39 PM

Well I can't understand how someone can't understand why anyone would like Radiohead and Tool. If you can understand that (don't kill me)

True, but I saw him in concert a few weeks ago. He might not sing that well, but he sure can play. I wasn't a big fan of his poppy songs. Then he played some blues and I really enjoyed that. Of course his Teeny boppin' fans didn't know what the heck was going on when he was playing blues, but they're stupid anyways.

World's King 09-07-2003 05:43 PM

Radiohead - Yippie, they're ugly... who cares?
Metallica - Dude, settle down.
Moby - Same shit different dork with a mixer and a drum machine.
Beck - Loser? You're damn skippy... you're a loser.
Smashing Pumpkins - Billy was cool when he had hair.
Tom Waits - Gonna go put a gun in my mouth now... cheer up man.

tj2001cobra 09-07-2003 05:51 PM

Coldplay - If there was ever anyone who can't sing.....

White Stripes - I cannot understand the fascination. They irritate me.

In retort of some of the others, I like Tool. Seeing Maynard in concert really brings their music alive. He is very emotional and the lyrics seem to have different levels.

Dave Mathews Band - I dont understand it either.

Bjork - I have a couple of her CD's and cant get into them. I tried.

Tori Amos - She sings alot about personal issues she has had (child abuse and such). She plays piano well and sounds good live. She is depressing at times, though.

Dave Matthews
Marilyn Manson

Ho-train 09-07-2003 08:24 PM

I'm not a fan of evanescence, dirty south rap, or john mayer. the world would be a prettier place without 'em.

3zos 09-08-2003 05:16 AM

pretty much all of mainstream emo. how anyone coudl stand hearing the same whining drivvel retooled into a different acoustic guitar bag of shit and be entertained, is beyond me. in addition, most of the bands wanting to be punk, and the nu-metal croud. blah.

pretty much anything played ad nauseum on the radio, i cant understand the fascination and the ensuing popularity. the stuff is just so obviously fabricated a lot of the time, youd think people would have more respect for the inherent creativity in good music, and reject the dime a dozen shit coming out into the public spectrum at such quantity. WAKE UP YOU FUCKING SHEEP.

hawkeye 09-08-2003 07:52 AM

dave matthews,
alanis morrisette
most Emo, Ska, and Nu-Metal//rap-core
eminem
(I'm sure there are more, but that'll do for now...)

Sleepyjack 09-08-2003 10:59 AM

This seems a little similar to the overated thread.....

JohnnyRock 09-08-2003 12:06 PM

There seems to be more bands everyday that I just don't understand and even more that I just don't know...either I'm getting old or music is sucking more...probably a little of both.

Leaving ALL COUNTRY MUSIC out of the mix I just don't understand Phish, Dave Matthews, Radiohead, John Mayer and...ah, the list is endless...

I think that for some music, your brain is either programmed to like it or not like it, that's why I can't comprehend not liking either of them.

stldickie 09-08-2003 01:19 PM

I sort of get Coldplay, but that Radiohead trash is pure swill. It's kilkling me that they are starting to get more radio play around here.

dr_clocker 09-08-2003 01:34 PM

White stripes, I like some of there stuff, but the remaining leave me confused.

DownwardSpiral 09-08-2003 04:24 PM

I don't see the fascination with 'gangsta' rap. It's all pointless if you ask me.

K-Wise 09-08-2003 05:35 PM

Only gangsta's and wannabe gangstas like it. If ya ain't one of em...you should hate it. I personally would prolly hate it regardless. Maybe if they put more thought into the shit rather than just nothing over 2 syllable vocabulary about killing someone. I think it's all bullshit cause how many people could you possibly kill on a record without being in jail for it or getting killed yourself? Too much fuckin frontin....YOU NEVER CUT SOMEBODY'S ARM OFF AND ATE IT YOU FUCKIN LIAR!!

AppleSauceMcGee 09-08-2003 06:12 PM

i cant understand why anybody likes slipknot... they formed an almost cult like following at my school.......huh

dylanmarsh 09-08-2003 07:09 PM

Bon Jovi and 50-Cent; I dig most music but these two should be playing USO shows and not headlining tours.

monkeydriven 09-09-2003 08:09 AM

radiohead
wilco

bish 09-09-2003 08:46 AM

I can't understand why anyone would listen to Limp Bizcuit!!!

Absolutely no talent there!!

redlotuss9 09-09-2003 08:54 AM

I don't get Dave Mathew's Band. They are incredible musicians, but I don't really like listening to them.

Derwood 09-09-2003 11:29 AM

I'd like to add to my previous list:

Warren Zevon
Randy Newman

tj2001cobra 09-09-2003 01:09 PM

I have heard coldplay live on two different occasions. Both times, the singer couldn't hold a note for shit. He doesn't sing on key, and he wails around like he is about to start crying.

I use the term singer pretty loosely for anyone that can actually sing to a song ON KEY. The coldplay dude sounds like a cat in heat.

If you really need me to give you a live of musicians with talent, I can do that for you. I have listed my criteria above.

Pink Floyd. What a load of bollocks.

Also...

The entire genre of 'Heavy Metal'. You name them, I hate them.

chickenhunta69 09-10-2003 10:34 AM

I just don't get why people would listen to eminen, or 50 cent. They just have no talent

rogue49 09-10-2003 11:47 AM

I like ColdPlay

But I have never gotten Bruce Springstein or Bob Dillion
Bjork is cute, but her music is annoying
and 50 cent is not worth a penny.

Oh well, who knows, I never liked Woody Allen either.;)

waxeater 09-11-2003 12:14 AM

Insane Clown Posse..... WTF!!

eple 09-12-2003 01:24 PM

another vote for radiohead...They are described as the best band in the world n'stuff, I have some of their records downloaded, but never manage to sit through any of them, they are just boring. All my friends love them too :(

ishkeb 09-12-2003 07:27 PM

First of all, I don't like Linkin Park, but I did see them live, and I can say that the lead's voice does hold up in concert. Out of all of the bands there, and there were quite a few that are "top" bands, they put on one of the best shows.

Moving on: I don't get emo. Any of it. I can see that some of those guys are talented, but it all sounds exactly the same.

METALLICA!!
I could see the attraction for couple of songs years back but never got into it. Theyre like a religion for some of my friends. My mind boggles.

MADONNA.
I simply cant fucking stand this shit.
"Everybody goes to Hollywood, They want to make it in the neighbourhood" I know shes a legend & all that but Ill never listen.

EMINEM.
In the immortal words of Public Enemy: "Don't believe the hype"

NELLY.
"Even when I'm with my Boo, Im crazy over you"
Someone, please, tell me what a boo is"
THis guy is regurgitating the same shit I didnt like five years ago, except this time hes got a plaster under his eye! I will not be running to my local record store.

And then some...
Bon Jovi
Placebo
Britney
The Spice Girls
Shola Ama
Anything associated with Puff Daddy
Missy Elliot
The Lighthouse Family
Seal
Lopez
Tiesto
Craig David
Coldplay
ICP
& Anything On MTV

wow.

so i guess my answer here is pretty much against most internet peoples choice in music.
but you asked the question, so donīt flame.

i donīt get punk, heavy metal, ska, shouty screamy death metal and gangsta rap.

sorry, but i just cannot understand the attraction.

so, to answer the question; which bands donīt i get... well iīll have to start with bands such as Metallica, Tool, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Cannibal Corpse, Korn, all ska/punk bands and most rappers.... oh, and i also cannot fathom the attraction of manufactured, talentless boy bands.

wow, I can't believe so many people are down on Radiohead. I think the main reason is that so much of their stuff is so off-stream, it's hard to get right into it. i would suggest radiohead - Idioteque, as a jumping off point. Try listening to it at least twice in its entirety, and then look at the lyrics. The song haunts me in my sleep, hope it does the same for you!

Magpie0001 09-13-2003 11:30 AM

Edit: OOPS!

frankx 09-14-2003 03:23 PM

I try very hard to keep in mind that for every band I utterly dislike, there's someone who genuinely loves them.

Even having said that, I still honestly cannot understand the appeal of the following (and this is NOT necessarily a reflection of their talent quotient):

Avril Lavigne

Limp Bizkit (and, by the way, what the f*** is a limp bizkit?)

Britney and anything/anyone associated with her dynasty

Backstreet Boys/NSYNC (can't honestly tell the difference, even though I've been told many times that there IS one)

Jennifer Lopez

Bruce Springsteen (Never understood BS, I suppose)

99 3/4 percent of country and rap music

meff 09-14-2003 03:50 PM

Heh.

I'll vote for Creed here, what are they really singing about?

50 Cent, god those lyrics are AWFUL.

Nelly, It's not hot in here at all..

Mostly everything on MTV.
Must.. Kill.. Carson..

SkanK0r 09-14-2003 07:40 PM

I'm no Dave Matthews Band fan, but somone said they couldn't play!? As a drummer, I can say Carter Beauford is a fucking MANIAC behind the kit.

Some bands I don't "get..."

BJORK - word. I think that she just mumbles and squeals. Her attraction is her "oh so artsy" schtick that people just can't resist. Same with Tori Amos, sans weirdness, plus melodrama.

WHITE STRIPES - Rolling Stone calls Jack White the 17th Greatest Guitar player of all time. Better than Pete Townshend... the music boring and repetitive, and again, I just can't stand their schtick. I miss guys in T-Shirts and jeans pouring out music. Now you can't make music without selling a style along with it.

warrrreagl 09-15-2003 09:43 AM

Rolling Stones.

Give it up already, guys.

I am sorry, butI think that the white stripes kick ass. What I respects is that their music does not sound like everyone else's, and the music feels like real garage rock. To me, their sound is raw and hard-edged, and not over produced. I like his guitar playing, and I like his lyrics. His voice is no good, but it is rock and I can sing along with it. Bruce Springsteen has had a couple of good songs, so I can't knock him. Also, people have done some good covers of his stuff. I just like Linkin Park. Of all the screamy rap-metal acts, they work for me. I don't think they are great, but they are ok for the radio. Limp bizkit sucks ass, Avril Lavigne can eat my ass, much of rap is repetitive, and Metallica ruled for 15 years, but they have finally started to sound like other bands. Though St. Anger kicks ass as a song.

MEAD 09-15-2003 07:00 PM

I will raise my hand as a radiohead fan here just to kinda even out the hating. I'm am completely understanding when people don't like Radiohead, I acctually like it cause I get to be pretentious then. But back to the point I have a many friends who like the new-wave, pop-punk, power pop, punk etc.. scene. They take it so seriously, and it depresses me that their musical tastes are so poor or unrefined, yet they think that this music represents some kind of rebellion. But no kid is accountable for his/her musical tastes until they are at leat 15, at least that's what I say.

this is how it was when i was in high school(freshmen in collage now). I love radiohead just because they are so different. This would also explane why i love beck..and hated Sea Change. To me, radiohead is like a new pink floyd, except they change more. the change in floyd from barrot to gilmour was alright, i liked syd better, but some of the post syd stuff was good, and thats how radiohead is, i like some of the stuff, and others i dont.

Dr.Who 09-17-2003 05:49 PM

The White Stripes. Sorry, but garage Rock can be listen in every single street in my city. I don't get it.

yournamehere 09-17-2003 06:05 PM

Blink 182

Saw them on Letterman one night - the singer can't carry a tune, and the guitar player knew 2 chords - tops.
I guess the drummer was O.K.
Those guys must spend years in the studio getting a track down.

Esoteric 09-17-2003 06:11 PM

A lot of these new "punk" bands and especially Linkin Park. I honestly don't understand how you can be good when you scream your lyrics at the top of your lungs...

mystmarimatt 09-21-2003 04:00 PM

Dave Matthews. i mean, he has a couple good songs, and i'll admit that as musicians, they're quite talented. but being able to play well doesn't mean you can write them well, a lot of the stuff ends up sounding like pompous drivel, trying to show off what they can do, instead of creating something aesthetically pleasing.

sigma1042 09-22-2003 11:55 AM

All this comes down to is what sounds good to a particular person,
some people like songs that "fun" (pop garbage), others like songs that remind you why you should kill yourself (Radiohead or other artsy bands), there are those that think more music should be about killing your neighbors' cat and pooping on it (slipknot or icp), and there's the people that need something that would make them feel tougher listening (fitty cent)

i seriously listen to everything, and everything has its place and is for somebody, but there are things that i don't enjoy as much as others, i really enjoy just a couple bands enough to buy their cds,
i've been to a ton of concerts featuring pretty much every type of band and music out there, so i've seen most of everything and the way the music interacts with the people
here is my quick guide to music i like, i don't like anything that in 10-20 years will sound like 80's music does today, just think about it like that once
i don't really like bands that don't play instruments well (there's nothing wrong with just singers if they portray themselves that way), i don't really like electronic crap, or heavy distortion, anyone can do that
i don't like when bands are political, just play f-ing music
i don't like over the top cheerleader crap music, remember life can suck sometimes
i don't like when a band just plays depressing songs, try releasing a second album once your life doesn't suck anymore and see how it plays
i listen to music to pass the time w/o killing anymore people than i like good singing voices, but it doesn't have to be perfect as long as it is powerful in its delivery, i'm not a fan of whining

i've tried listening to a lot and i still don't understand some bands, i've tried

a lot of my friends really like radiohead, i can't stand it really
way too dark for me, i figured out when i spent several months very depressed about life, that this type of shit did absolutely nothing for me
i think they have become "too cool for school" (haha i can't believe i used that) sorry i can't really hear the talent there, poor singing, musically they are ok if they tried, but i think they rested on their "critically acclaimed" laurels, the critics don't know dick (the same type of critics that put the white stripe guy on the greatest guitar player list, what a joke)

someone should tell springsteen that just because you write 10 minute songs and try to sound like dylan doesn't make a great songwriter, he has about 5 good songs, the rest sound the same
if you want to talk about politics, run for office then you can be exposed as a know-nothing blabber mouth

death metal with unintelligible lyrics i don't really get, only because it really does all sound the same

i don't get why there are so many rappers that do sound the same as well, i like originality

geez i'm running way to long with this and i could probably go on a lot longer

CyCo PL 09-22-2003 07:45 PM

hilbert25 10-08-2003 11:28 PM

I'm a big Tool fan, but I can understand why a lot of people don't like them. Their music isn't always especially melodius, or even really music. Their concerts and videos are awesome though, which consist of performance art-like spectacles that remind me of what I heard about dada plays.

I really don't get:

Radiohead: It's different, that doesn't make it good. And it's not especially different if everyone listens to it. I was a CS major in college. Everybody I ever worked with listened to them and Electronica. It got monotonous after awhile.

White Stripes: What's the point of paying money for garage rock?

Dave Matthews Band: Why does everyone refer to them as "Dave"?

irseg 10-09-2003 01:28 AM

White Stripes. They're just a bad ripoff of crappy 60s pop (The Animals, etc. come to mind).

And while I'm on the topic...17th greatest guitar player ever, my ass! The fact that John Petrucci wasn't in that Rolling Stone list--let alone in the top 5--pretty much invalidates it.

While I'm pissing people off, I never really got the fascination with Joe Satriani. Without a vocal, all of the "songs" start to sound the same. He should have gone the Santana route and got some vocalists to help him out. Waste of talent if you ask me.

Crap you guys - you've taken all the good ones.....Dave Matthews and his odd lyrical sense; Good Charlotte (ack); Linkin Park (no talent white rapper garbage)... But nobody has mentioned the obvious Britney. ewwww....

Linkin Park
Metallica
Creed
Evanescence
Dave Matthews
John Mayer
DMX - stop yelling at me!
Ja Rule - stop yelling at me!
The Eagles - Good for a nap.
The Beatles - not to start a flame war, but I think they get TOO much credit. Good pop act though, they did well with shifting their musical style and their image with the times. I think Harrison was their best asset.
Jimmy Buffet
Steve Miller Band

That's about it. I like almost everything.

LOL! I think they are way overrated as well. There really only is so much you can do with one guitar and a drummer who can barely double-time.

*yawn*

I can't understand this whole "emo" thing..or whatever the hell they pass of as "punk" nowadays..

i dont get 90% of everything ever recorded. thats because 90% of anything creative is garbage. fortunately, the remaining 10% still leaves me with literally thousands of bands and tens of thousands of songs to enjoy.

I don't get anything by Tori Amos or Bjork.

I gotta throw in on Dave Matthews Band as well. They are OK...I just don't hear anything that makes them special.

Darth_Kettch 10-15-2003 11:56 PM

I honestly don't get the fascination with Tool. I mean, there's nothing wrong with the music or anything, but it doesn't appeal to me on any level!

Country Music I just can't stand, as many others here.

Norwegian Black Metal... I mean: What the hell?
I like Swedish Death Metal a lot, but Black Metal just... Sucks. It's not music to my ears. Stupid Mayhem
