Canadian music.
OK... I've seen an Aussie music thread so I decided to start a Canadian on... eh?
Personally, I think the best Canadian band right now are I Mother Earth. Thier last two albums have been amazing. Sam Roberts is also a great artist, I really think he has what it takes to make it huge. Anyone else?? |
Lots of good canadian bands out there. Treble Charger (my favorite), Our Lady Peace, Three Days Grace, Gob, the list goes on...
|
strapping young lad
|
sloan is good too....
|
I am not a huge fan of Canadian Rappers...But they are ok.
Anyways, I Like Nelly Furtado...She has a pretty good sound. |
I've been introduced to quite a few good Canadian bands from my friend in Alberta.
Treble Charger, I Mother Earth, (Default and Nickleback before they became populare here), Blue Rodeo... bunch more I cant think of off hand... Yay Canada! |
godspeed you black emperor and the tea party

Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, you fools! Best band ever... Geekrock at its finest.
|
Gotta love Sloan.
Can't not like the local boys |
the hip!
|
Godspeed You! Black Emperor are probably the best... really, I haven't heard a lot of REALLY REALLY REALLY good bands out of Canada but maybe I'm not listening hard enough... or maybe it's because anything really good from Canada couldn't make up for some of the artists that they've produced that are the absolute SCOURGE of the EARTH... Celine Dion, Alanis, Avril, Simple Plan... UGH.
Voivod and Sloan are pretty good though... |
Big Wreck
Big Sugar The Hip Neil Young |
|
JOYDROP!!! they are a kick ass Canadian band.. popular in the US for a bit.. too bad thier fifteen minutes was more like 5, I really like them!
|
Lately I've been listening to a lot of Canadian music.

I used to play "One More Astronaut" from I Mother Earth's "Scenery and Fish" constantly in high school. I still listen to Matthew Good Band's first three albums, and occasionally Tangiers.

it would have to be the tragically hip, our lady peace, and the living end (just heard the other day that the living end is canadian :))
|
Nobody mentioned The Odds?? (r.i.p.)
I thought they were the most amazing band going, but they never got the repect they deserved. I remember driving to Regina (shhhhhhhudder...) to see them live and there were only about 500 people at the cabaret, and this was during the tour for there final album...what was super cool was that Stephen Drake remembered me from a couple of previous shows (i love accessible bands that you can talk to after the show) and we hung out for a half hour while they tore down... every song was gold... |

Barenaked Ladies Finger Eleven (I Like the name Rainbow Butt Monkees better) Other Canadian bands I can think of: Econoline Crush Ennis Sisters Matthew Good Band Gob Sum 41 - Canadian right? Can't forget the Crash Test Dummies Kid Koala Len Loverboy Bryan Adams Serial Joe - Almost a 1 hit wonder, but not quite. |

Chantal Kreviacuk.
She makes me weep openly. |

My personal favorite is the Tragically Hip, who are tragically way less well known outside of Canada. Download one of their songs like New Orleans is Sinking or Nautical Disaster to find out how kickass they are. Also love the Barenaked Ladies. |
God Speed You Black Emperor!
The New Pornographers different sounds, but all good stuff |
Couldn't believe it took about half the page for someone to mention the Barenaked Ladies... :(
OLP and Matthew Good Band are great too. |
East coast is alive and well too.
|
it's all about, Andrew W.K

Not quite Canadian. Don't get me wrong though, he rocks like nobody else. And like Breid said don't forget the East Coast. Buck 65 is one of the most intelligent and creative hip hop musicians I've ever heard. |
Matthew Good all the way. Not really into his latest album but it's still worth listening to. It's cool because he's a local guy and you can see him in downtown Vancouver quite often :)
OLP Rush The Tragically are also my fav's. |
I fully endorse Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Barenaked Ladies, Gordon Lightfoot, Big Wreck (awesome live shows) and Kid Koala (the best scratch DJ I have EVER heard).
I woudl also like to mention: - Parkside Jones - Ark of Infinity - Do Make Say Think - Leonard Cohen (I can't believe noone mentioned him so far...) |
ole sammy roberts played at our university this year, he is simply amazing
Plus, you cant beat bryan adams! |
nickle back is canadian... arent they (they suck tho)
|
big time
|
No one mentioned Thrush Hermit, or The Weakerthans! Those two bands are excellent, i would greatly recommend checking them out. Oh and also The Flashing Lights, Sarah Slean, and Hawksley Workman!
|
BNL
Tragically Hip Rush and probably a bunch I'm forgetting |
I love the Tragically Hip, and my abosolute favorite band to see live is Barenaked Ladies.
|
I'd have to say the best band with energy and good musicians to come out of Canada in the last 10 years is Danko Jones.

The Tragically Hip and Neil Young would be my favourites from Canada. The Tea Party are also a great band.
Other notables are The Watchmen, The Headstones and Big Sugar. All of these bands are now broken up unfortunately. Well The Watchmen are currently on their last tour. |
Just a little note for anyone wanting to hear more Canadian music tune into CKUA radio.
streaming from www.ckua.com Click "Live On Air" They play more than Canadian, but you will hear a fair amount there. |
I want to second Buck 65 and The Weakerthans. Can't believe it took a page and a half for their names to come up.
|
