Ford GT: will it REALLY be a limited run?

Obviously they say that to inflate prices, but I just don't see how it can be. I mean, that engine's the same as the one in the Lightning pickup, and apart from the bodyshell, there's really not much extra cost in making the thing, but of course there's a HUGE margin (when compared to the same stuff Lightning, which already has a huge margin over the F150 stock version)

So my thinking is that the shareholders would (and frankly should) force them to do more.

I say this because Ford and GM are both fucked, financially, and so the easy options are long gone for both of them.

I love the GT, but I'd never buy one because these prices seem detsined to take a beating. When Ferrari says it's making 2500 cars, you know it's true. They don't have to make any more.

What does anyone else think?

There was talk about the original 89-90 Miata's being a limited run and look what that turned in to for Mazda. I'd hate to spend the big bucks just to watch the price plummet as they produce more to "meet consumer demand."

depends on the definition of "limited run" TECHNICALLY anything is limited that isn't unlimited, so all cars have a limited run... they aren't going to make them forever.

i think a "limited production" run should have a SET FINISH when it starts thought. a time or a number set at the beginning that says when they will stop making them. will Ford break their limited production claim? hard to say, they might make MORE than they originally said, but doesn't mean it won't be a limited production. but it might just be a marketing term...

good response Tech. "Limited run..... Limited to ten billion only! Get em while you can!"

Speaking from experience, at a major manufacturer, without naming names, I can vouch for the accuracy of this.

As the owner of a Lightning let me assure you the L and the Ford GT do NOT have the same engine. Both are 5.4 Ford V8s but the Gt has 4v heads and the L has 2 valves.

Its looking like it will be limited, one of the plants closing makes the GT...

Didn't I see somewhere that Ford is making a roadster version of the GT, or was that just a show car?

that's the same engine, with a different head.

If it has different heads,a different blower, single cams instead of two. No dry sump oiling. Different rods, different pistons...fewer valves...
It is NOT the same engine. By that logic the LS1 and the LS6 Chevy small blocks are the same engine because they are both 5.7 liters. But they share about as many parts between the two as the Lightning 2v SOHC motor shares with the 4v DOHC Ford GT.

I wish the Lightning and the GT shared even 85% of the same componnents. Hell I wish the Lightning just had the 4v heads the GT has. Get another 1000 rpms out of the sucker easy.

Ford just canned the GT, they stopped production of the GT and 2-3 other models to expidite the closing of its Wixsom plant outside of Detroit.

I saw one at the Drag Strip last ngiht and it smoked all the way down the track and ended up dumping coolant all over the track then didnt tell anyone that he had any trouble or anything.

They are a cool looking car but way over priced IMO

Is this true? Not arguing, just saying that I have not heard that Ford ended the GT....

Oh, and everyone on here is talking about the Lightning, and the motor being the same, etc...There ARE differences, and the Lightning is no longer in production, seeing as how SVT took the big cut...

Yep Gt is at the end of it's production run.

bodypainter 02-15-2006 01:51 PM

I guess this means normal people (ie, me) will never be able to afford a used GT. Bummer.

Congrats to Ford for making an amazing car. I have to disagree with the OP and say I don't think there's any way Ford made money on this car and they never expected to. It was a marquee car for them, a showcase, and I think it filled that role nicely.
