Is this jeep worth purchasing?

http://urbandev.net/jeep.jpg

Price $7,880
Mileage 118,799
Engine 6 Cylinder Gasoline
Transmission 5 Speed Manual
Drive Type 4 wheel drive
Fuel Type Gasoline

I'm going down there on saturday to look at it and drive it, and discuss pricing

urbandev 09-19-2005 06:47 PM

it seems to be missing its antenna :x

JStrider 09-19-2005 07:26 PM

i dont know whata jeep like that goes for... but it looks pretty nice... i really like those jeeps

price it at the kelly blue book web page... see what they say its worth www.kbb.com

if all those miles are easy highway/city miles its a better deal then if a lot of those miles are big time off road miles, the off road miles are way harder on a vehicle

cyrnel 09-19-2005 07:28 PM

What year? I know it's pre-97, but that makes a big difference in price.

KBB says 5200 private party and 7300 retail for good condition '96 sahara. (Really, newest YJ build was 95 but they cleared inventory through 96 while tooling for the TJ.) Options we don't know about are 30" tires, Trak-Loc, audio, etc. Starting price isn't a steal but pictures never tell the whole story.

You might want to hunt for a sport. The Sahara package was sort of a sport with Eddie Bauer colors, and price penalty.

urbandev 09-19-2005 07:30 PM

its a 94 ..

Ill ask for a more detailed description tommorow

cyrnel 09-19-2005 08:05 PM

94=7125 retail, 5035 private. (my location, good condition)

With any 4x4 find some gravel and check the different 4x4 modes. It doesn't have to shift like silk but street jeeps often have tcase issues from lack of 4x4 use. If you can't find a mode, ask and make sure they can. Make a semi-quick launch in 4x4 low. Does it jump to N or another mode? (could be internal problem or just linkage, but it's a good way to knock a couple $hundred off the price.)

Open the air cleaner and look for oil drools on the filter or down the filter box. Tells you if owner watched the CCV orifice and probably other things. Look for sludge under the oil fill cap. Rust on the dipstick. The 4.0L is bulletproof if the lube has been taken care of, but it doesn't like sludge. That one's old enough to have history.

If you're making an appointment, ask that they NOT warm it up. You need to listen and test it cold. Changes how everything shifts, and how the engine sounds. If you near knocking while cold it could be the usual pre-99 4.0L piston slap or something worse. They may not know 4.0L's so it can be another price helper.

Get under the front and look up at the linkage as someone cranks the steering from lock to lock. If you see any up/down movement (anything but rotation) in the steering joints at full turn it means worn joints and a couple $hundred.

As mentioned, look underneath for evidence of off-roading. If you see long scratches or dents it usually means some crawling or crashing. That takes its toll on the best vehicle. Off-roading might have been mild and fine, but from here all bets are off.

Good time to look for oil leaks. If they've cleaned it, look closely at engine, trans, and tcase seals. Front and rear diffs, too. The rear D35 yoke seal is a common drooler and you'll pay $100+ up to have it and the crush-sleeve replaced correctly. Jiffy lube or other shortcuts cost less but can mean gear problems later.

See if it tracks straight at highway speed. Any shakes? Are lane changes okay or white-knuckle? Modification and abuse possibilities are endless, and can cause problems for street use.

Of course, if they have records that's always a plus.

Granted, it isn't an Accord, but a bit of inspection can improve your chances or at least your price.

Edit: Another off-roading sign: check for evidence of tow hook use.

NOTE: You have significantly reduced your risk of purchasing a vehicle with
a hidden problem. However, CARFAX has not inspected this vehicle. There
could be other potential problems with this vehicle that have not been
reported to CARFAX. CARFAX recommends a vehicle inspection by a
professional mechanic.

NOTE: Not all titles issued represent a change in vehicle ownership. For
example, a title could be issued to reflect an address change or correction.

Detailed Vehicle History Definitions:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Failed Emissions Inspection - The emissions check performed during a vehicle
inspection indicated the vehicle was emitting more than allowable emissions
standards and/or had missing or modified parts. Repeated failed emissions
records can indicate engine problems and CARFAX recommends you have the
vehicle inspected.
First Owner - A state issues a title to provide a vehicle owner with proof of
ownership. When a title is issued to the first owner of a new vehicle, CARFAX
labels the title record with "First Owner".
Mileage Inconsistency - If a more recent odometer reading is less than an older
reading but CARFAX is uncertain whether the discrepancy is a rollback or
a clerical error, then CARFAX calls it a "Mileage Inconsistency". In this case,
you should verify the mileage with your dealer or a qualified mechanic.
New Owner Reported - When a vehicle is sold to a new owner, the Title must be
transferred to the new owner(s) at a Department of Motor Vehicles. CARFAX
identifies this event and labels the title record as "New Owner Reported".
Personal Use - Vehicle was registered by the owner for private or personal use.
Gross polluter and inconsistant milage...
cyrnel 09-19-2005 09:54 PM
I wouldn't worry too much about the one emissions failure. Many tests since have passed.
The mileage thing was right when it became a hot potato at auction and dealers for two months. Not a good sign. Unless the gauges were changed and not reported I'd be careful even at the 130K mile price. ($6775 retail)
urbandev 09-19-2005 09:57 PM
yeah, thats what had me worried too...i wonder why it went to auction in the first place
urbandev 09-20-2005 12:46 PM
i think it was suppose to be 24...and the tech fucked up...
if not then i dont know...
Im still checking it out saturday
slacker00 09-21-2005 08:13 PM
Here is my two cents regarding Jeeps. It is all about what you want to do with it and what has been done to it. I have a newer Jeep (2004 Rubicon with a bunch of extras, it from the outside it looks kinda trashed but a jeep guy would know what he is getting into).
Here is my things, at 94 I suspect there are leaf springs on the rig. This may mean a fairly harsh ride around down and there are some people that run from leaf springs offroad. Do you want this for a city vehicle? If so the 33's on it with the possible 3.10 gearing might make it just a dog to drive around. PM me or something if you have any more questions.
urbandev 09-21-2005 08:45 PM
My mom has a 94 that i use to drive all the time, i plan on getting a 5 inch lift CSC (Coil spring Conversion) from work and throwing 33"s under it...for now
Turbotom 09-23-2005 12:07 PM
...I like the old school leaf springs, but not for any particular reason beyond the fact that they are completely outdated...by like 25 years.
is no power to it at this time it could be a fuse or ..... maybe the
wire???? Not sure. It's a very nice vehicle please keep me posted"
alot of question marks in that
j8ear 09-23-2005 02:17 PM
I wouldn't touch a lifted jeep with a ten foot pole. Especially one with two owners, an imperfect carfax history, and a price higher the KBB.
Get a stock one and modify it yourself. Much better assurance of a job done right.
Gauranteed the alignment is whacked, and this thing has been pounded off road by someone who thought they were the tomb raider.
I agree...WAY TOO many question marks in the sellers reply.
MY opinion...PASS.
urbandev 09-23-2005 03:21 PM
heres the email i sent to the dealer:
Quote:
I've been doing some talking with a few of the jeep guys we do bussiness with here, and a few friends i know that build those for a living, all of which are telling me that price is too high.
Theres a used 98 down the street from here with 70,000mi for $7500
6cyl, 5spd, never been offroad, clean carfax report.
I think there are just too many things with that jeep that peak my concern for that price...
urbandev 09-23-2005 03:23 PM
luckily i do work in a 4x4 shop so i get to ask customers and retailers about stuff like this, and you forums whores, and jeepforums, the common concensus is to keep my dick in my pants an wait... unless he changes the price severly
tenmile 09-27-2005 11:53 PM
That's STEEP dude, i could buy one of those with less miles for $4k.
It's a common expression amongst flat fender enthusiasts.
Prior to the 1987 model year, jeeps had big ole round headlights, and in 87 they changed them to the square headlights, which also brought alot of 'refinement' to the jeep, commonly and generally disdained by the true jeepster as not as rugged and/or off-road capable.
In fact, the expression grew such that Chrysler returned to round headlights (in 97 with the TJ I think), some believe, almost exclusively to make it a non-issue.
Here's an interesting look at jeep history
Well, I have a WJ, it does not have round headlights. So, don't be offended.I was talking about the wrangler/cj line. But seriously, that model above, you can get one for much less. It's not that bad of a vehicle, but I would look for the newer model at that price, the updated interior is much nicer.
tenmile 09-29-2005 08:20 PM
Yeap. None of my ZJ's have round headlights, but i prefer to fourwheel with AC and subs in the back :-)
i wouldnt buy anything with that many miles from a dealer for more then a grand. if your going to spend that much money on a jeep or something with over 100k buy it from the owner not a dealer. spend 2grand and have 5 left to fix whatever is wrong. 5 grand means hey new engine and trans if worst comes to worst but then you have fresh stuff to put another 100k on at least.
Not when i have no cash, and need a vehicle asap.
so if i have to finance it why not finance it with a minor lift, new wheels and tires, and the deluxe model with all the extra whos-yer-daddy's?
plus i already bought it.
Congrats Dude....lot's of aftermarket and enthusiast support for the entire Jeep line. Check jcwhitney, they have a whole section in their catalog dedicated to jeep replacement parts...from entire tubs to every single piece of the body, tops (hard and soft) doors, everything. I know there are many more, and probably better sources, but everytime I get a jcwhitney catalog I wish they had a section for vintage Bronco's.
I wish my liberalness would let me buy something like that.
That is a great jeep.
Ilow 06-02-2008 05:32 PM
it's looking good. what's the mileage now?
urbandev 06-02-2008 08:39 PM
Milage: 164,005
Mods/Upgrades done:
Replaced & upgraded transfer case and rear driveshaft (the stock DS blew a u-joint going over donner at 2am, drove back to reno with no rear DS in 4wd)
Replaced/Upgraded exhaust system (the above issue lead to the demise of my facoty muffler, as the shaft beat the hell out of it)
Warn bumpers front and rear (they had the spare mounted to the tailgate, so when i would open the tailgate - it would fal about 2 inches due to the weight)
KC lights and windshield mounts
Front locker & posi-lock
Tuffy overhead radio console with scanner and cb - rear antenna mounts(everyone bashed their knees on the little cb that was mounted under the dash)
New, upgraded front springs - Rubicon express 4.5 XD (I ran it into a ditch in the snow and bent the pass front spring, so i had to upgrade)
Cut those lame map bags off the seat as they served no purpose
Replaced lame cassette player with lame cd player
Threw lame spring mounted license plate mount in the trash and mounted plate on the spare
Took factory center console out, ran it over and threw it away. (it had a screw poking out on the lid...it poked me so i killed it)
Added a ton of scratches, bent the front passenger side fender a little and creased the hood (I'm stupid and tried to pull forward toward the garage with the hood up resting on the windshield)
Overall I'm pleased with the purchase :D
