Impreza 2.5RS... opinions anyone?
 

I'm considering selling my miata and pcking up the older(1999-2001) Impreza 2.5RS coupe. They look better than the WRX, comes in a coupe, and insurance is cheaper (so please don't recommend the WRX, price is also a constraint).

Anyone own or owned one of these things? Any comments, complaints?

a friend has a 2.5 RS it rocks if you can afford it buy it you will not be disappointed

I've driven them and have 2 friends w/ them. Great cars. I love how they look. There are turbo kits available now in the US too if you're looking for more power, not to say they're underpowered...

Seriously any subaru will run great. It sucks it's not a WRX, but it will run forever, unlike a mazda.

yea, if you didn't notice i'm real late on this one. i have a 2001 2.5 and love it, i've driven WRXes, but would chose mine over them. i love the higher displacement (i like american more than import) and the looks of the 01 over any WRX. it handles like a dream. the GC8 is said to be the greatest handeling impreza built. the trans set up on a 2.5 is also said to be better than the WRX. it may cost more to milk power out of the EJ251, but i think it's worth it. i currently have a cobb CAI and love the sound of the exhaust/intake mixture when I get on it. i'd sugest anyone who can't afford the insurance of a "sports car" get an impreza. oh, all-whee-drive drifting is worth it in its self :D

Put on your own turbo and you'll have WRX performance at a fraction of the insuracne cost :)

As far as the engine goes, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I've got a 2000 Subaru with 76K on it and I expect to last at least 200K.

Subaru has a club for owners that go over 100k without any major repairs...kinda weird since I think almost EVERY Subaru would fit in catagory.

One of the best cars there is. Its proven to make you happier, be more attractive to the opposite sex and help you solve very complex math equations in your head!!(ya serisously.) Well great performance car. tons of mods for it. I've built one with my friend And basicall for it to be a killer of all cars on mountains and drags is a 22b sti motor swap (roughly $4k) and then a Tien suspension pakage(about 2k with sway bars) and your ready to smoke anything out there including evo's and new sti's. And even if you dont want to mod it its still a great car that is reliable(just be easy on the tranny and maintence it every 20k miles) and it looks awsome.

A great car, and the newer 2.5's with the single cam are said to be more reliable.

My friend had a 98 2.5RS, now owns an 04 STI. He misses his 2.5, but only occasionally... His had heavy suspension mods as he ran it in SCCA Autocrosses, but it was a wonderful car. I only wish I'd had the $$$ to purchase it when it was for sale.

Good choice, you won't be disappointed.

I know 3 people with them, and they love them. That's what I wanted before I got my Eclipse GSX. It was a choice between the two, and the GSX was closer to my price range a few years ago. Very nice cars and fun to drive.

subarus dont come out witha single cam its a boxer dumb ass

22d sti motor i don't think so they only came out in turbo 2.2ltr and the prduced a 2.2ltr engine in the 90's it was N/A motor but only 500 were ever sold thet were only sold in rhd in new Zealand and japan , as new zealand @ the time and still currently sells more subarus in the world than anywhere else per head of population so new zealand has exclusive cars frm STI sold here as well we also got the S401 sti legacy for sale here last year just a little of facts for ya
but you could always do 3.0ltr coversion or the 2.5 turbo conversin but sti hasn't put there wand of those motors yet .

I owned a 1999 2.5 RS. I loved it, absolutely loved it. I only had it for about 20 months since I traded it in on a WRX when they came out. I did drive it hard and put about 60,000 miles on it in that time with no trouble with it at all. I was religious about scheduled maintenance though. I thought it looked and handled better than the WRX, of course it had less power. Regardless, it was still a blast and I would buy another in heart beat.


mdryfhout Subaru considers their cars to be SOHC since each bank of cylinders only has one cam. I think they switched to SOHC from DOHC in 1999.

Why do they advertise them in N.Z Quad cam but i suppse its just marketing ?
Bu if they are flat 4's the pistons are horizontal and is esily then dohc or easily a quad cam thats what they are technicaly because the pistons are facing out then able to have twin cams per bank one inlet cam and one exhaust cam ....and i doubt in the U.S they would advertise them as single cammers what would be the point they would lose sale and looklike the using old school engines

I think they were able to get more midrange torque out of the sohc if memory serves me correctly.
