Cars and titles

Someone I know wants to give away his car. It could be a great project car to work on. My only worry is if I get the car will I have to buy insurance for it even though it is not road worthy? Or can I just get the title and haul the car to my house?

When you transfer the title, you can talk to the DMV. i forgot the term, but you can title the car for non road use. You basically tell them that its going to sit in your driveway, and not be used on the road. You will not need insurance on it, and you must change the registration / insure it before its legal to drive it on the road. I know this is in California...cant imagine other states being too different.

Go to DMV, return plates, drop registration.

That's all you would need to do in CT.

Most states that I've dealt with (as an insurance adjuster handling total losses and thus title transfers from all over the country) are happy to do a simple title flip. Basically it is a legal transaction selling the car from one person to another. So long as you make clear that it is not roadworthy and will not be driven, you will not have to get plates or insurance MOST LIKELY.

You may also find that the DMV will not allow a person to simply give the car to you. You may wind up having to pay $5 or something silly. The laws can be very wierd.

Yeah, we had a car given to us...wasn't too bad actually. Just put $0 in the selling price blank. Most people have a hard time with it that way, so buy it for a buck just in case.

Yeah, pay a buck or you might be expected to pay gift taxes on the car's full retail value.
