My Project 1984 Mustang GT

This is my project car I bought for $200. Thought I would share it with you all.
http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...gotitside2.jpg Here it is....sitting in the woods for 5 years....stinks really really bad....engine seized...missing parts...two bald tire.....rust....ick

http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...verinside2.jpg Here is the inside....Theres where most of the engine parts are......not to bad of shape

http://www.airstreamcomm.net/~southp...gerinside2.jpg Now the passenger side.....you name it it was probabaly in the back seat...including 4 rats nests.

http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...dirtyback2.jpg The backside.....now that says wash me.

http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...ngineside2.jpg Kinda missing a few engine parts....and was stripped of most of the AC stuff and no more smog stuff....the pump is still there but doesn't pump anything and the two catalytic convertors will be replace by dual glasspacks with headers :)

http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...Wash/rust2.jpg here is the floorboards..only a few dime size holes which easily where patchable...pretty good for a 19 year old wisconsin car.[IMG]

http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...h/mustang2.jpg
nice older tbird rims with almost new tires.....damn factory alloys where a goofy 390mm trx rim....$207...screw that...

Nice. A V8 stickshift fox body is an excellent starting point. My cousin is running a 347 stroker with GT40X heads and a tiny hydraulic roller cam. So far he has made 13.1s, should go 12.7s tonight, we made some timing changes and he gained 50hp on the dyno.

big_bubba 09-12-2003 10:40 PM

Nice project. It's good to see people building American V8 cars rather than rice rockets. If you can count the number of cylinders on one hand....it is NOT a race car.

I'm trying to work out a 5-speed swap for my Dart (sorry, I'm mostly a Mopar guy but I like all Iron ;)).....but I don't have the cash. There was a '83 GT 5.0/5speed in a yard near me but the tranny was LONG gone. With an adaptor plate those can fit just about anything...

Peryn 09-12-2003 10:44 PM

Wow...thats in...terrible shape. Lol, hope ya got lots of time and money on your hands. I picked up an '82 280zx a while back for 500 bucks. it was running... but barely. Was in much better shape than that, but with my plans gonna end up replacing everything. Decided it was worth it to part out the old one and buy one in better shape to begin with.

Personally, i dont liike that body style. Though a lot of people love em. I wish you the best of luck and cant wait to see pictures of it as it progresses.

If nothing else, you could part it out on e-bay and make the 200$ back probably :D

merkerguitars 09-12-2003 11:09 PM

Well what I don't have pics of is the latter engine work I have done.....New solenoid, Edelbrock intake and carb.....I only have two rust holes in the fender and fix a door a little....Definately fixable. Yeah its a good project. Parts are easy to find and are cheap.

Unless there are no cylinders. in which case it very well could be one helluva race car...

JBX 09-13-2003 05:27 AM

Yikes, You have your work cut out for you.

Sion 09-13-2003 06:29 AM

"This is my project car I bought for $200."

you shoulda made him PAY you $200 to take it.

LOL j/k.

yeah, you gots LOTS of work in front of you, but your project is only as limited as your imagination and bank account.

with enough time, effort and $$, you could make that a 10 second show/race car.

have fun.

Moonduck 09-13-2003 07:06 AM

Best thing about 5.0 Mustangs is how cheap and easy they are to hop up. It's a rock solid platform and dirt cheap.

You do have a bit of work ahead of you though....

CrazySaturn 09-13-2003 07:46 AM

big_bubba, so you're telling me the Lotus Elise isn't a race car? :P

Anyways, beautiful car! I love the pace car nose body style for some reason.
As for the plans, what do you want for engine/transmission? Making it an auto-xer or drag?

Scorps 09-15-2003 06:48 AM

Thats what I want to do with a 95 Impala or a late 70 early 80's Chevy pick-up.

jwoody 09-15-2003 07:02 AM

Seeing as I've got nothing better to do, I've lowered your suspension for you. That'll be $1000 please.

I have the same car but mine's white, Let me ask you this every one I've see have a problem with the drivers seat, does yours?

acpower 09-18-2003 04:44 AM

nice project car.. i wish you the best of luck with it

What type of problems with the drivers seat....tomorrow or tonight when it stops raining i should have some new pics of my engine compartment :)

BlackStallion 09-18-2003 12:58 PM

nice project...

merkerguitars 09-19-2003 02:56 PM

http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...withfilter.jpg http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...withfilter.jpg

Here are some pics of the engine compartment after i did a ton of work.....still lots left under the hood to finish.

RotEx 09-19-2003 04:19 PM

i think that you should lift the engine out man, i am a clean freak, i love making things look immaculate, if it were me , i would lift the engine, clean everything, peaint the inside and firewall and take off the components (i.e belt tensioner and stuff)

and remove the rust... the car would look so much nicer if you jsut did that, its a shame to see such a nice intake and air filter on such a dirty rusted everything else. heh

looks nice though

keep us posted on how it goes

Stare At The Sun 09-21-2003 01:16 PM

That does look like its coming along rather well, you better keep us updated!

Lyaec123 09-21-2003 03:34 PM

Pretty phat man, I was working at the auto auction the other night and there was an '86 5.0HO there with stick. That thing hauled ass, I dunno if it was modded, but it was faster than the '96 LT1 firebird that was there too, and those birds are FAST. Sweet ride once you put a little work into it. I had a buddy that took an '89 Fox body stang and threw a carbed 351W in it with a 3 stage shot of nitrous. I think the last stage was something huge, in the couple hundred horsepower range. He called it "all bottle no throttle" haha

JusticeForPhat 09-21-2003 04:54 PM

yeah thats a hell of a project car you got goin there. So cheap with so much potential. You can do a lot with that. Go as far to mod the christ out of the suspension and make it an Auto-x car if you want. I've seen it done, it works out pretty well but its a lot of work.

extracool64 09-21-2003 08:08 PM

A 200 dollar project car is a great way to start. I would have but I wanted a car with character so I had to pay a little more. Thats a little better condition than the $200 project car Im looking at starting. The mustangs are good cars and the stick shift makes them fun to drive anywhere.

merkerguitars 09-21-2003 10:37 PM

Well this week I'm gonna hopefully buy a AC and smog pump eliminator....The smog pump was locked up when I got the car and the AC clutch isn't spinning as slow as it used to which makes the car knock like hell when I rev it up. After that it's time to redo the exhaust (headers and glasspacks) The engine compartment will be spotless once i'm finished...i'm gonna get aluminum pulleys...repaint the interior....cut all wiring that i definately do not need and polish the valve covers. The car needs alot of little items which will take some time but will be worth the wait :)

Does it run yet?

merkerguitars 09-22-2003 03:49 PM

Oh hell yeah it runs....in about 70F weather you just pump the gas three times and bump the key and it runs....I can get it to idle at about 650rpm..I have it set at about 1000rpm just so its easy for me to take off with the clutch easier.

Peryn 09-22-2003 11:26 PM

wow, for 10days time i am dully impressed. Now that it runs and all, any idea what kind of condition the engine is actually in? Any plans to replace it / rebuild it / take it apart and clean the hell outta it? Even with some new manifold and all, gaskets and seals and who knows what else could be wrong with a 20yr old engine.

Anyway, very nice job and quick too. Make sure to keep us updated with pics :D

Scorps 09-23-2003 09:29 AM

Ya if I was going to restore a 20 year old car I would rebuild the engine.

Just to be safe

merkerguitars 09-24-2003 06:56 AM

Actuall I took me about a month to get as far as I was. It was running withing a week of getting it. I had to unseize the engine and get a bunch of misc parts. This Winter I'll probably rebuild it. My friend just sold me a bare 302 block for $50 that will be perfect. This will get me buy until the winter easily.

Arachnid 09-26-2003 04:37 AM

Great looking project................ any chance of a Wav/mp3 of the motor knocking on the redline......................please :)

Cheers

well a few revs will do

tfin 09-26-2003 10:21 AM

Nice project. Hey if you want an ford AC compressor pm me. I have one I pule out of my LTD. It worked great but I needed the room for the hydros.

dailyjo2003 09-27-2003 07:39 AM

Great car. I always wanted one in Highschool. Good luck!

merkerguitars 10-15-2003 09:20 PM

Well today I just bought some headers and next week I will be buying some glasspacks and a transmission crossmember conversion so I can install duel exhaust. Also I removed the smog pump and ordered a pulley to replace it. So no more smog equipment. I'll post pics tomorrow. :)

Sweet project ... my sister had a 90 5.0 coupe, I wish I had the money when she decided to sell it, she had a rear disc brake kit on it, a 4 pt. roll cage, and full suspension modd

Scorps 10-20-2003 08:20 AM

did she do all them mods to it herself?

you know I like a girl who knows whats she doing when it comes to cars;)

never 10-20-2003 10:58 AM

pretty good deal for $200.

89transam 10-20-2003 11:07 AM

Is it really worth it? I mean with the amount of money you will put in you could have started with a better car for cheaper.

duckduck 10-20-2003 02:22 PM

Financially, it might not be worth it.

It's the fun in fixing it that merkerguitars is going for.........at least, I think so ;)

MSD 10-20-2003 02:44 PM

The funny thing is that a year ago, I would've called that a lost cause, now it looks like fun. I looked at each part and started seeing it like one of thos Mastercard commercials, but with time and money for each. Have fun, and I hope you're planning a crate engine or some serious power mods.

YAY FOR MUSTANGS!!!

hehe i just had to say that :)

DEI37 10-20-2003 03:34 PM

I'm not a Ford fan by any stretch, but I AM a fan of the Fox body Mustang with a 302 and a 5-speed. Have fun with it, good luck, and don't settle for ANYTHING less than 450hp at the rear wheels.

Scorps 10-21-2003 10:03 AM

450 now thats some power

Well worth it to me...I have contacts with people on peformance parts so i'm saving some money. Plus I love to fix up and hot rod cars.......

I'm not really a ford fan by any extent either...I just bought it cause it was cheap and easy and inexpensive to soup up. I'm more of an olds v8 fan :) And DEI37 the nice things about fords are that they circle their mistakes

Within a few weeks the engine is coming out and i'm gonna redo it from the ground up and start some body work it has a small hint of a bottom end knock it seems like :( but oh hell it gives me a chance to soup it up......Hopefully Friday I will make a small mpeg movie of it running to show you guys...and show you the goodies i'm buying for it.....a friend is trying to convince me to build the engine up and put a 250hp direct port nitrous set up on it..tempting......if you guys have any idea for mods i'm more than willing to listen to you plans....i like input!

irseg 10-28-2003 11:40 PM

That looks like a fun project!

Ford really had the comfortable sporty car market nailed back in the 80s. Mustang GT/SVO, Lincoln Mark VII, Merkur XR4Ti, Thunderbird Turbo Coupe (I LOVE mine..fun to drive and the damn thing won't die!), Thuderbird SC, Taurus SHO, turbo Probe GT, and there's probably a few others. They kicked ass back then and are still highly competent by today's standards.

Now Ford's down to the Lincoln LS (a total flop), and the Mustang, which is STILL built on a platform that dates to 1978. But hey, they have that power folding seat on their SUVs, isn't that what really matters?

The mustage is junk....the 2004 doesn't look bad. But its whats under the hood that counts

dailyjo2003 10-30-2003 10:07 AM

Change out the rear end to a 4:11 Ratio gears; better acceleration, which is the fun part to me.

merkerguitars 11-02-2003 09:09 PM

Well after working my ass off the engine and tranny are finally out of the car...now the fun comes.....tearing it down and building it up. It will be a whole different car after I'm finished....

Engine looks like shit well Intake is nice and new but rest looks like crap......

merkerguitars 11-03-2003 01:22 PM

Yeah thats almost 20 years of rust for yah......it will meet mr high pressure steam cleaner this week :)

Scorps 11-04-2003 12:12 PM

So you going to rebuild it for preformance?

merkerguitars 11-04-2003 09:58 PM

Plans for the engine
Forged Pistons
Bump the Compression Ratio up
Get an older set of heads without emissions and rebuild them
Forged rods
bore it 10 over...
Full MSD ignition...
Maybe a forged crank
200hp shot of NOS (cheater competition kit)
and many more upgrades......

Scorps 11-05-2003 09:51 AM

NICE NOS:p

I hate the way the new heads have them emissions crap on them

merkerguitars 11-21-2003 12:31 AM

This weekend the engine will be fully dismantled..and then the coming week and engine rebuild kit will be ordered :) More pics are soon to come :)

Scorps 11-23-2003 02:56 PM

NICE!

merkerguitars 11-28-2003 03:01 PM

Here is a pic of it stripped......http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me.../Stripped3.jpg

I'm prepping it for a good steam cleaning. I took off the power steering pump but I broke a bracket :( but at least its easy to find at a junk yard or on ebay. I took off the clutch apart and holy shit is it worn down and the flywheel definately needs to resurfaced. The pilot bearing in the crankshaft also seems to be in the not so greatest condition. I also started to plug the tranny up so that can get clean too :) Hopefully by next week I get it torn apart fully so I can start getting pistons ordered so I can then finally get the cylinders overbored to probably .10 (I guess I need to have the pistons on hand so they can blueprint the engine)

merkerguitars 12-05-2003 04:58 PM

Started to disassemble it...heres some progress.....it's kinda scary...
Here is the engine on the stand
http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...mbly/stand.jpg

Here's after I took the intake off...pretty clean under there since i'm the one who replace the intake
http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me.../intakeoff.jpg

Here's with the heads off...amazingly it the cylinders don't look that bad besides the surface rust from a little bit of water getting in there when being cleaned......
http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...y/headsoff.jpg

Here's the scary part...took the water pump off...underneath the back plate it looked and smelled like shit.....The water pump itself was clean...what must of happened is all the coolant was going behind the pump plate instead of in front of it....
http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me.../waterpump.jpg

Here's the bottom end...actually doesn't look like any problems...but the oil pan had lots and lots of sludge in it...plus some coolant:mad:

http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me.../bottomend.jpg

merkerguitars 12-07-2003 06:32 PM

w00t even more progress

Well here's some worn out conrod bearings...the cause of the knock :(
http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...ornbearing.jpg

Here's my nicely worn crank....shot...which sucks :(
http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me.../worncrank.jpg

Here's what is done so far...all nicely stripped
http://www.oldweakandpathetic.com/me...y/stripped.jpg

BoCo 12-07-2003 07:20 PM

Well it looks like a V8 to me.

If you had coolant in the oil pan you got problems.

merkerguitars 12-15-2003 12:06 AM

Updates...12/14/03
getting the crank reground...they have to take alot off ot it but it will cheaper than buying a new crank.
Hopefully getting a engine kit ordered soon and then I get that done then I can finally get the block punched over and started to assemble.
For a camshaft I was thinking of getting and edelbrock performer rpm camshaft......lots of lift and duration plus a nice sounding idle :)

BooRadley 12-15-2003 05:35 AM

I like your documentation, and this story. But I have a suggestion:
GEAR DRIVEN TIMING!

I was think of getting a chevy one of them cam's....

BigTruck1956 12-18-2003 03:54 PM

check yer block for cracks because there should not be coolant in the oil, could also be the intake gasket though too

merkerguitars 12-28-2003 11:34 AM

Ok this week the following will happen...
Block will get sent in to get magnafluxed and boiled
A full rebuild kit will be ordered that consists of:
Forged pistons--speed pro
Chrome moly rings
high volume oil pump--melling
new bearings all aroung
Felpro gaskets
Forged I beam connecting rods
Timing chain set.
Then once I get the engine kit I can have the block bored and blueprinted and then balanced.

big_bubba 12-28-2003 11:50 AM

Nice progress there man!!! If you don't mind me asking, what has all this (engine) cost you so far?

ledhead, nice to see somebody likes my quote :D

(I'm a led head to by the way, man they rock lol)

merkerguitars 12-28-2003 12:32 PM

Prices so far.....
$200 for the car as it was in the first pics
$130 to get a new title from the DMV
Carb and Intake where around $330 for both...
Crank Reground is $85
Block bored blueprinted balanced and magnafluxed $120
Each head to rebuild is $180 a piece (it will be more if my guides are shot i don't know yet)
Engine kit is about $377 with the parts i have mentioned before
Camshaft is about $250 that I want...

WannabeTFP 12-28-2003 09:04 PM

Awesome progress, keep us posted, and good luck!

big_bubba 12-30-2003 01:13 AM

Not too shabby. What are the specs on the cam? $2K for a car that isn't finished yet may seem like a lot, but when you consider it's gonna have a completely rebuilt (and not stock :D) engine, I'd say it's worth it.

Can't wait until I get there.lol

merkerguitars 01-09-2004 07:43 PM

Well got the crank back...holy shit they took alot of .030 off the mains and the rods...but the shop did a kick ass job of it...they also said they'll professionally balance the whole engine for cheap and now i have the money saved finally for my engine kit..but the damn place that i am ordering from hasn't been open....soon very soon

Scorps 01-12-2004 11:22 AM

Holly shit .030 thats a lot to shave off....you better get a good set of over sized bearings.

merkerguitars 01-19-2004 10:06 PM

Scorps 01-20-2004 10:34 AM

Well crane is a good company my, buddy has one in his chevy 350.

svt 01-21-2004 01:45 AM

You wont come near that much hp without heads, besides the stock intake, they are the most restrictive part of the engine. You should go with trickflow/afr/or edelbrock heads, they are light being as they are aluminum. The e7 heads are heavy as hell and dont dissipate heat nearly as well. With H/C/I you are looking at MAX 350 at the wheels, take 15-20% for drivetrain loss and you'll get flywheel estimates. If you get a 200 shot of nos you'd be pushing the block to the max, most people say the block can hold 500-550 hp and anything more than that is a ticking time bomb. I have a 93 gt and its in the process of being upgraded like yours =) there are some great aftermarket parts for stangs/5.0s thats the beauty of the car. You'll be spanking camaros in know time, as it is you should be able to beat early IROCs. If you have any other questions, I'll see if I can help out, check out http://allfordmustangs.com and http://www.corral.net

Thanks for the tips...I'm wondering my self if I port and flow the stock heads if that will help alot...I would easily buy some aftermarket heads if I had the money. Maybe someday I can put a turbo on it....

351 Winsor which is just a bigger version of the 302 and the 351 Cleveland.

To pricey....if I totally mess up the old cover i'll just get a new one...if I can find a spare i'll use that instead. This week I my valve covers should be done being powercoated, they should look sweet!

Found out my old harmonic balancer isnt' safe to use :( The rubber in the middle is old and dried out. An OEM one is $100 and an aftermarket one is only about $80 so i'll go for the aftermarket one.

On Tuesday the 8th i'm gonna pick up my other 6 rods and my camshaft (i'll take pics it shoudl be beefy :))

Got all my pulleys organized and I gave them to a good friend of mine. He's gonna make me a full set of racing aluminum underdrive pullies for free!!

Found a really good tutorial for porting and flowing stock ford heads. If I remove the air injection in the heads and port the hell outta them they will flow better than edelbrock heads (not 100% sure on that but anything is better than stock)

Scorps 03-09-2004 10:39 AM

NICE!

merkerguitars 03-09-2004 12:56 PM

w00t I stopped in the engine shop today and every little bit of machine work is done. They are sending the parts out today to get balanced and hopefully I should be able to pick it up next week. Then comes the paint and they said I don't have to do any tolerance checking and just slap it together! Also I picked up a new balancer for about $70 and picked up some sweet ass comp cams racing pushrods for cheap. :)

Here's a pic of my dirty oil pan I just steamed clean...which will get bead blasted and power coated :)

What colour is your pan going to be?

merkerguitars 03-11-2004 02:34 PM

Dropped oil pan to get sand blasted and powered coated...(black of course) The engine is ready to be assembled...I just have to scurry the cash together and I can pick it up!
