My wet dream has debuted!

It takes a lot to attract attention with a new car in Monterey, where a Ferrari on the street rarely warrants a second glance. But Bugatti was able to do just that with its new super car.

At the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Course is lined with dozens of multi-million dollar collector cars, while over at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca car owners throw caution to the wind and race wheel-to-wheel with irreplaceable cars on the challenging road course.

But Bugatti did just that, staging the official public debut of the Bugatti Veyron 16·4, and visitors to the Montery Historic Automobile Races at Laguna Seca witnesed the Veyron 16.4 in motion for the first time when it completed several flying laps at leading the field of 40 historic Bugatti race cars to the green flag.

The challenge of attracting attention during this packed automotive weekend even caused me to wonder if the on-track spin entering the Andretti Hairpin on the first lap was actually staged to create more drama. But I suspect the test driver returned to face a number of stern Germans who were not please at having the car pitched off into the dirt.

As the Veyron exited turn eleven and the quad-turbos spooled up for the first blast down the straight, our photographer who was standing at the pit wall felt as if the air was being sucked out of him when the Veyron shot past.

Pebble Beach Concours
After the brief drive at Laguna Seca, the Veyron 16·4 then returned to the lawn in front of The Lodge at Pebble Beach to join the more than fifty Bugatti cars from the past that graced the field, including the Best of Show winner, Peter Williamson’s 1935 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, one of only two in existence.

A worthy successor to the elegant and powerful Bugattis of the past, the Veyron 16·4 is powered by a 1001-horsepower W16 quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter engine with all-wheel drive. Bugatti claims this new super car will reach a speed of 252 mph. Acceleration is also impressive–the Veyron can reach 180 mph in just 14 seconds!

The elegant design pays tribute to original Bugatti designs and each car will be custom tailored to exactly the buyer’s specifications.

The Veyron is named in honor of Pierre Veyron, a legendary race driver from the 1930s who earned his reputation driving Bugattis.
The new Bugatti Veyron 16·4 is built by Volkswagen, which acquired the right to the name a number of years ago and the company appears to be committed to the elegance, performance, and exclusivity that characterized the Bugattis of the past.

The Veyron 16·4 is expected to sell for more than $1 million. Only a few dozen cars will be produced each year and total production will be limited to 300, guaranteeing the limited number and exclusivity of the original Bugattis.
I asked my boss, "Can I borrow a million bucks? I'll pay you back with all the cash chicks GIVE me to fuck them because I have this car." I've been following this car since Hanxter posted images of it way back in v3, and GOD DAMN it's one sexy machine.

Radical design, I would prefer the look of the Ferrari 575 Maranello or the Mercedes SLR McLaren.

Performance-wise, this machine takes the cake...damn

marshall26 08-25-2003 03:04 PM

I'll respect it as a fast car because it can go faster than a $10k bike with $10k of work done to it. And it's one of the best looking cars to be produced in a while.

drawerfixer 08-25-2003 03:32 PM

I think it's a great car, though I haven't yet decided on the exterior though.

I _think_ that the 1001 horsepower rating is using the English system or something like that. Car & Driver lists the car at 987 horsepower. 0-60 in 2.9 seconds though. Wowsers. :)

It's defiantly a unique design, but I think any new Ferrari blows that away in the looks category. I'd still like to have one. I don't care for the rims on the car. They coulda made the car look much better with different rims. I liked the rims they have in all the concept pics that I've seen.

It also looks like that wing is adjustable.

AP1 08-25-2003 04:06 PM

yeah... hard to believe the 1001hp but good god what a ride. 987 is still no joke

I've made my choice a long time ago.

Coucher 08-25-2003 06:35 PM

I don't really like the grill or color scheme.

Otherwise, looks pretty good.

Pragma 08-25-2003 06:57 PM

I saw that article earlier today and have been drooling ever since - quad turbos? That's just sickening, as well as the 1001 HP.

I'd love to get one, but I'd be afraid to drive it. Seriously, with a car like that, where WOULD you drive it? Anywhere you go, you'd have cops following you waiting to go over the speed limit - and it's not like you could lose them in a conspicuous car like that.

acpower 08-26-2003 02:55 AM

very nice car.. BUT why couldn't they have designed better wheels for that unveiling!?

Bugatti boss resigned
A shocking news - Bugatti’s president, Karl-Heinz Neumann, has resigned because the Veyron supercar is facing heavy delay. Originally planned to launch early this year, the Veyron is experiencing problems regarding the reliability of the quad-turbo W16 engine and the 7-speed twin-clutch sequential gearbox. It is believed the launch date will be pushed back to summer next year.
This should be a blow to the prospect of Bugatti. Since Audi took over Lamborghini in 1998, the function of Bugatti inside the Volkswagen group has been in doubt. Although Veyron claims to be the fastest car in the world, its uninspiring styling and full Volkswagen engineering have not attracted too much attention, much less than Ferrari Enzo and Porsche Carrera GT. So far, Bugatti has only Veyron in the pipeline, making observers believing the brand will be discarded once the production run of Veyron end.
And about the engine power measurement:

There are different methods for measuring power, test conditions such as ambient temperature, air pressure and accessory loss could be different, thus the same engine could obtain different power rating by different methods. The most commonly used methods are:

EEC: European standard. Measure at 99kPa and 25°C. Rated in kW.
SAE: American standard. Measure at 99kPa and 25°C. Rated in hp. 1kW = 1.341hp (SAE).
DIN: German standard. Measure at 101.3kPa and 20°C. Rated in hp (ps). 1kW = 1.360hp (DIN).
JIS: Japanese standard. Theoretically same as DIN, but we always find it is actually smaller.
British horsepower: same as SAE. Rated in bhp (could be confused with brake horse power).

In other words, 300hp (SAE) = 300bhp (British) > 300hp (DIN) > 300ps (JIS)

FastShark85 08-26-2003 05:46 AM

Neat design, but the two-tone paint doesn't work.

Neo 08-26-2003 05:49 AM

1001 HP hard to believe? With 8.0 liters and 4 damn turbos?? Give me a break, not hard to believe at all.

A fine car Hal, and if you want one, go ahead on bro.

TM875 08-26-2003 08:19 AM

Yea, I'm really surprised with such a big engine and 4 turbos that this car doesn't put out more power. And I'm REALLY surprised that it doesn't go faster.

But I like the looks of it much more than the Ferrari.

a1t3r3g0 08-26-2003 08:27 AM

If Hal can afford that car, I don't think he'd need to ask for donations! :p

Scorps 08-26-2003 09:53 AM

That car is so hot. Now think of the power that a W16 puts out...LOL

IC3 08-26-2003 11:19 AM

I remember reading up on this car in a magazine a few months back...This car is suppose to have more power than an F1 Car...That's pretty impressive.

I forget what they had for 0 to 60..But it was almost unbelievable.

Shpoop 08-26-2003 12:05 PM

yea man, what a car. Bugattis are sooo good. From the grill u can just tell that it provides perfect unobstructed airflow. And 4 turbos, does that mean like stage for or four, one after the other. that would be insaaaaaaaaaane

I like the style, but i was a HUGE fan of the older style

skippy 08-26-2003 12:09 PM

That is one wild car Hal , I love it ! My personal favorite is the newest toyota Landcruiser... if I could only afford one.... it's my dream

thadon 08-26-2003 02:12 PM

that is an awesome car, can't afford it though

psykosis 08-26-2003 07:49 PM

I've seen this car at a car show a couple years ago (obviously it was still in concept form, though it hasn't changed much at all). Ever since I laid eyes on it, I have lusted after it. I wish I had the $1,000,000.00+ required to obtain a title and a set of keys. Maybe someday. I can only hope to ride in one, or even see one on the road...

:sigh:

Reddevil63 08-26-2003 08:19 PM

:hmm: wtf? A lady bug?

Jeff 08-26-2003 09:28 PM

Imagine how sick you'd feel if a moron blasted through a red light and smashed into your million dollar car.

Most probably you wouldn't give a shit... You'd drive your Ferrari Enzo instead... :)

The color scheme sucks? They should have it all black or all red...

They would find that so fast.

The wheels are on purpose. Look at the older cars and see how true to the original they are.

Besides I like the wheels. :)

telekinetic2 08-28-2003 03:14 AM

Yeah, I'm really surprised it has so little power....I've seen Toyota Supra's with 800 HP, and they were 3.0 liter six-cylinder single-turbos...This has same size cylinders, only it has ten more of them, and has three more turbos...and only makes 200 more hp? Weird.

I'd still drive it.....

stinkynutz 08-28-2003 05:32 AM

bad ass ride

although the paint and rims could be better for that kinda price

Well, you have to think that the Supras with 800+HP are tweaked a great deal. If you took a bit more money and started tweaking this car, you could probably jack the HP rating a great deal.

Ya there is nothign wrong with them.

Knoweffects 08-28-2003 03:41 PM

actualy supra's come with twin turbo's, and most of the high horsepower ones still stick to a twin turbo setup, new turbos but still 2 of them.. anyone that swiches them out for a single looses any kind of low - mid - midhigh range power they had.

Twin is the only way to go.

bundy 08-31-2003 12:00 AM

thats pretty damn HOT!

love how that pic there shows the old bugattis next to it... what an evolution.

its shape is very powerful-looking...

impreza56 08-31-2003 02:46 AM

awesome car, dunno about the styling on the front end, kinda looks a bit off and the whole car is a little too round but who gives a ..... with that hp (if that figure can be believed).

Plus i reckon the wheels actually look pretty good- minimalist so they dont attract attention away from the rest of the car.

soccerchamp76 08-31-2003 09:49 PM

But you would have too much horsepower if you tweaked this car. In reality, you still have to move the car with tires and the higher pweor you go, the more spin you are gonna get. But it is still a badass car that can go extremely fast. DAMN

Feyenoord 09-01-2003 03:29 AM

Sweet

Zesty 09-03-2003 06:41 AM

nice ride
