Tips on Selling a Car for Parts?
 

Okay, so I have acquired a 1989 Chrysler New Yorker. It gave me enough peace of mind to get me through a rough week, but it threw a rod, and now has a lovely hole in the oil pan. I'd love to sell it for parts, and have put it on Craig's List, but have only had one response, and that was for $100. Am I just better off selling it to a salvage yard for $150? It's in pretty good body condition, just has the blown motor, so I was asking for $500... is that unreasonable? Here's a link to pictures. The viewer password is california. Thoughts? :D

If you want to sell a car for parts and actually make money on it you have to sell the parts individually, and that means finding a place to store a car in pieces, and it also means disassembling the car and then having the shell hauled off (if you can't sell it). If you sell a car AS a parts car, you won't get very much for it at all. Unless it was a hard to find car I would certainly not pay $500 for a non-runner.

Honestly, best thing to do would be to sell it whole to a wrecking yard, unless you have some land to let it sit for a while durring the time it takes to part it out. Cars are tough to part out and profit on durring the short run. wrecking yards make their money from large volumes of cars, over a large time period. Hope my advice works...and give us a CALL girl! *kisses cheek*:)

I would sell it to a wrecking yard. It is such a pain parting a car out by yourself. People aren't going to want to deal with you unless they know you have exactly what they need. The wrecking yards are able to get a lot of customers since they have a lot of selection. I sold a car to a wrecking yard for $130 last year. I went back a few weeks later and dozens pf parts had been pulled from my car. Going by the published price sheet the yard had, they had grossed about $300 from my car, with a lot of decent parts still to be pulled. There is no way I could have sold that many parts off my car on my own, nor would I have wanted the hassle of dealing with that many people calling or emailing me wanting to get a part for 5,10, or 20 bucks.

If it were only older..............but since it is not my vote goes to the wrecking yard.
