In memory of my pet

Some of you may remember me posting a photo or two of my cat:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...chMemories.jpg

It's been a few months but I am still kinda broken up over his passing. He was 8 years old and very unique. He would always run to the door when I got home and greet me. He guarded me and my house. One time he even caught a peeping tom when I had a girl over. He was kinda dog-like.

I feel guilty. I had to move to a place that didn't take pets. I was forced to drop him off at my sisters. She was very nice to him but he was miserable. All he did was hide and not act like himself. He didn't eat and lost a lot of weight. I eventually took him to the vet where it was hypothesized that he had liver cancer. I had to put him down because he was having seizures.

I still miss the little guy.

I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is like losing any other member of your family. It'll take time, but you'll feel better :)

Wow. I've been there before. It's not easy. Hope you can find a new pet to fill that hole in your life man.

Asta!!

So sorry, Astro. I really do know what you're going through.

I've been in your shoes several times and it was never easy.

Some say it is silly to get so emotional over an animal, but I disagree.

Please believe that my thoughts and prayers are with you :(

Fremen 04-03-2005 11:46 PM

Sorry you had to make that tough decision, Astro. You did what was best for him, though.
Just remember the good times y'all had together and eventually the pain won't hurt so much.

We're here for you, as well. :)

That's too bad. Losing a pet, especially one you were really close, is tough.

I am sorry your cat died. I know myself that losing a pet can be just as hard as losing a member of your family.

Sounds to me that you feel guilty because you couldn't take him to your new place and that you can't help but feel responsible on some level perhaps for his health. Thing is you had no way of knowing at the time that that would happen to him. For all you knew, he could have adapted to his new home quite well. (Which can happen.) I have 2 cats now. One was my father's cat whom I inherited when my father died. The other is a cat that belonged to my ex girlfriend. (My ex didn't want her anymore.) My father's cat took a while to come round but eventually did. My ex's cat took about a day to come out from under the bed, but now she and I are best of friends. (My ex even says she likes me better than her - which is true.)

I know myself I grew up with cats and dogs around and when I moved out on my own, I gave up owning a pet figuring that I didn't have enough time to devote to an animal. Now that I have a couple of cats again though, I can honestly say that I feel much happier than I have in a long time. Having a pet reafirms one's humanity sometimes. I don't think I would ever want to live without a pet again.

My advice to you would be to move out from your current place to a place that allows pets, get yourself another cat, and don't ever give him up for anything.

You will feel better then.

I woke up crying last night. I was kind of in this semi-concious dream like state and I was just remembering when I got Friedrich. I had one of those temporary cardboard cat carriers. I was in college and I didn't have a car so my friend Ben took me to pick him up from the cat lady. I peeked into the box on the way back and we stopped to get some cat food.

Then there was this other time when he ran outside during a rain storm. I was using a water bottle train him. He thought that because I didn't want him out that I was somehow spraying him with the water bottle. He was trying to dodge the rain. He ran back in with minimal soakiness.

So I woke up thinking that he'd be there sleeping by my feet like he always used to be. I realized that I was in a different place.

sorry for your loss, i'm sure he was a great companion.

I'm sorry for your loss.:( I know how you feel. The cat I had for a happy 16 years while growing up died 3 years ago and I still miss her. She always slept at my feet too. At least now our pets are in a happy place above. I hope you find a new companion to help you create many more happy memories.

james t kirk 04-17-2005 03:55 PM

Sorry to hear that you are hurting so much.

I keep looking at his picture and thinking what a happy look he had on his face.

My one cat is older (12 I think, not sure) and I live in dread that something will happen to her. When my father died last year, she did more to comfort me than anyone else. I've been through a lot in the last few years and l am afraid that if anything happened to my cat, that I would lose it. I hope she lives to be 25.

I really think you should get another cat though. I know it won't be the same, but it might help you suffer a little less.

Do you have a link to the other threads where you posted about your cat?
