Legionnaires Disease

Ok, I just got diagnosed Monday with my second case of Legionnaires Disease (first time was approximately three years ago). This time, I knew immediately what was wrong because I recognized the symptoms. Now the medical community is telling me that I appear to have a proclivity towards getting this.

Has anyone else out there ever been afflicted with this and have you had a repeat episode.

From what I can recal it comes from drinking water infected with the bacteria or inhaling vapor from a contaminated source.

I did a serch and got this:

Quote:
We reviewed seven cases that had been reported and found recurrence of Legionella pneumonia possible after a successful treatment, especially for immunocompromised hosts. Early empirical therapy with erythromycin is recommended.
from http://www.vghtpe.gov.tw/~cmj/5705/570509.htm

and

Quote:
Contracting Legionnaires' disease a second time is extremely rare. We have never encountered such a case. Thus, it seems likely that there is some immunity after the patient experiences the first infection. The most common risk factor is cigarette smoking. So, any patient who has contracted Legionnaires' disease (or any other type of pneumonia) should immediately quit smoking.
from http://www.legionella.org/general_info.htm#n1

So your immune system either lost it's anti-bodies (or never had them) or was weakened by something else which allowed the bacteria to effect you a second time.

Wish you good health soon.

Has your water at home been tested for any contaminants?

Do you spend a lot of time travelling?

Mantus, thanks for the info.

Maleficient, after the first time, the Health Department checked the house out and found nothing. We are looking at having an environmental group come through to check things out shortly. We live in a historic neighborhood and our house is almost 100 years old so god only knows what they will find.

As far as my current health, we caught this one quick (due my immediate recognition of the symptoms) so I am already back on my feet and spending part days at work. The first time the doctors were stumped until we got a specialist on day 7 of having this thing, and my temperature was almost a constant 103.5 to 104. My wife said if she hadn't been so scared out of here mind, t might have been funny, what with my delusional ramblings.
