Elbows clicking

My joints in my elbows click whenever i strech them out, does anyone know a way to prevent this happening? or to heal this problem?ive heard its bad for you to click your joins in knuckles and stuff and im guessing its the same for this, but its hard to prevent :(

apeman 04-08-2004 02:08 AM

well I've heard that finger joint clicking is bad for you, but I'd always assumed it was an urban myth made up by people who find it irritating ;)

I don't think clicking isn't necessarily bad but that's more an opinion than a hard fact

if this is with regard to exercise, you shouldn't really lock joints out straight when lifting

hmm, it doesnt only happen when excersing but just whenever i strech my arms out... i have been locking my arms quite a bit whenever at the gym so ill try cut down on that
thanks for the help apeman

Cavitation is just the release of air in a joint. If there's a grating sound to it instead of a pop I would be a little more concerned. From what I understand the only possible problem is repeated frequent cavitation over a long period of time can cause the body to build up a little extra calcium between the join causing a little more friction. It would take a lot of popping for that to happen as far as I know.

My knee has been popping a lot lately but it's always followed by pretty intense pain. You didn't mention much if any pain so I wouldn't be very worried.

It can be normal to pop a little in both your elbows and knees (my knees pop pretty good after kneeling for awhile). But you'd be surprised what a little excersize can do!

nah theres no pain, just wondering if there is a way to rid of this clicking :x

Is it repetitive clicking, or a one time crack like a joint crack?
If it is like a joint crack and does not repeat with every rep, then you are fine.
If your have repetitive popping or noise, then this can often be caused by weakness or instability in the joint. Oftentimes this noise comes from tendons or ligaments not gliding smoothly over other tissue or bones. Sometimes it can come from a tear in the medial meniscus in the knees, or other cartilage in other joints.
Stretch beforehand, and make sure your form and technique are sound. For instance, if your knee is collpasing inward in relation to the toe during squats, lunges, or leg presses, then the knee is not working as a hinge joint, like it should. This misalignment can lead to noise, inflammation, and then pain. You can often use joint noise as a tool to diagnose proper form.
In my case a couple of weeks ago, my knees were slightly swollen with no pain. Every rep of squats clicked, so I moved to leg presses. More clicking. Did leg curls no problem, tried leg extension with noise. My body was telling me not to push it because I could not correct the problem that day. Next leg workout went fine.

nah its not repetitive,

is there a way to rid of this clicking though?

I have the same thing...I straighten out my arms and crack my elbows. My brother has the same thing. Doesn't cause any pain so I don't worry about it.

Not that I know of, Its a little annoying sometimes to show a new client a piece of equipment and have your elbows crack.

Drink water! I'm dead serious too! I saw a doc about this a few years ago because of my severe joint pain and popping that I was having. Being that I wasnt even 18 at the time, I thought joint problems were a lil out of place. He told me to drink half of my body weight in ounces of water every day for a few months, and guess what, it works.

My elbo clicks/pops, about every 15 min when I straiten it out. I can always tell when it is about to happen like pressure building up in it. It doesn't hurt, but it only happens in my right elbo, and started happening after a skateboarding accident. I can feel some grinding right before the crack happens. Does anybody think I may have chipped a bone or something?

pocon1 04-15-2004 09:18 AM

I think you shifted something around. You probably changed the area enough to cause a slight distortion and that makes it more prevalent to click. I would not worry about it too much, unless there is associated pain or any type of weakness or instability with it. BTW, did this happen recently, or is it an old injury?

macmanmike6100 04-16-2004 02:02 PM

i would talk to a doctor about it, although I don't think it's serious.

my joints in general tend to click when I don't get enough sleep, so could that be it?

danthony12321 04-20-2004 10:06 AM

It doesn't hurt when it happens to me, just feels like it is harder to strighten out, then it cracks and it is fine. I've actually fallen on the elbow 3 times (this seems to be the side I land on), and it has been over a year since it started making noise.
Thanks for the input guys.
