optics, anyone?
 

Sup,guys. I'm a soph at UofRochester and I'm in the market for an optics internship this summer. Can nybody help w/a hookup,recommendations, etc.? thxx all

I can't directly assist you with an optics internship. I just finished my internship in server-side programming and webdesign a few months ago. It is hard going and truthfully, I found my internship through a fraternity connection (one of the only *good* things to ever come out of that relationship). When it comes to find internships (and jobs), its not a matter of what you know, but who you know. Personally, I would try talking to professors and career services at your school, but I expect you are already using that resource.

If you are a member of any professional societies like IEEE, I would suggest attending some of the chapter meetings outside of your school (ie., real world) and networking with some of those guys. The only method that landed my internship was strength in numbers.

tritum does have some good suggestions. you should work your network as best as you can, but be serious about it. it's serious business.

I've already hit up the career counselors, my boss, and professors. It's just that the search doesn't stop there, and most internships aren't directly advertised on websites and whatnot. Hence asking around on the board.

Regarding Cynthetiq'S reply, sorry didn't intend to be so casual, but unfortunatly, that's how I am.. Kinda half assed. I'll try to change that. Specially when I"M the one asking for help, right? Well.. thanks for making that clear w/out being too harsh about it.

I'm specifically looking for an internship in LongIsland,NY. Optics includes majority of anything including lasers and materials science (physics/engineering). So far, I work at the UofRochester's Laser Lab. I'm basically fabricating LCPDI's. Just started recently, so soon, I'll be expecting to be datalogging and whatnot. I've only started taking optics classes llast semester, so basically, I only have 1 and 1/2 optics classes(geometric optics, and interference/diffraction) under my belt (sophomore). I'm open to anything. Preferably on the ISland/NYC for the summer.

il - I understand the casualness, but remember you are networking and you need to remember that someone you are talking to may lead you to the right door. Keep dotting your i's and crossing your t's until you land what you want.

Since you are targeting the Long Island Area, (i lived in Hicksville for a bit) you should find all the companies that use or produce the technologies you are schooling on.

While lasers may be the niche you are looking to, maybe you should also broaden that niche a bit because truly what are you looking is learning process and procedures for technology. While lasers would be the ultimate, something within the technology sector would suffice in at least getting you into the business door.

the main reason I'm leaning towards depending on internships via word of mouth and networking is because the really big ones posted by known colleges like columbia, etc, are undoubtedly going to be swamped by apps. whereas me, i'm being realistic and not putting too much on that knowing that i'm sure as hell not going to be qualified relative to everyone else in my class. you see.. i go to UofRochester, and it's known #1 for optics. therefore, the '06 optics class is no larger than 25 people (and will surely decrease)and I know for sure that i'm merely average. therefore, i'm thinking its best to aim for less publicized internships. don't get me wrong. I have gone extensively through the school career center as well using other resources such as LongIsland based chapters of OSA(optical society of america), etc. but would also add the more obscure internships to my edge above others.
