New GF and Valentine's Day
I just met her two weekends ago at a science fiction convention. Since then, we've chatted via ICQ. Now she's given me her phone number and address, since I mentioned that v-day was coming up. :D
I'm trying to decide what to get her. Flowers is the answer, but what? A few yellow roses? A suggestion I just got from a passing cleaning lady is 6 roses, two of each in {yellow, pink, white}. |
Hmm.... I'd go with tulips. Roses are nice, but since you're just getting to know her maybe tulips would be better. A nice multi colored bunch. Plus they're less expensive ;)
But if you're going to go with roses, I'd go with a few yellow. 6-12. Nothing less than 6, and nothing more than a dozen. I've only gotten flowers from a guy once. My ex sort of forgot Valentines day, went to the grocery store and got a rose. It was pretty much dead when I got it. |
A bouquet of mixed roses is nice. You're right that red roses send the wrong message. Or... maybe the right message too strongly. ;)
Don't send white flowers either, those are what you give your mother. That or she'll wonder whose funeral you stole them from. |
I think roses would be nice. Theres nothing wrong with any colour roses red , white , yellow , pink. Personally I do think that red and white would be appropriate only because those are the 2 colours you do associate with Valentines day. The other thing you could do is find out her favorite colour and send her a half dozen or a dozen of that colour, hopefully its not green...hehe
I like red and black roses myself but I can never seem to find any black ones. |
When you do go to the flower store, don't be talked into getting BLUE roses not even if they tell you how special they are. They're just white roses dyed blue. Don't make the same mistake I did.
Also since you two met at a science convention, maybe you could give her something that you and her share an interest with. |
I'd say go with the mottled-pink roses... they're a white and pink rose, and quite stunning when given in a boquet!
But that's just my opinion. I'm thinking along those lines for my girlfiend. |
Have you tried asking her what her favorite flower is? Yes, roses are nice, but if I was dating a guy, hopefully it'd take him no more than a couple minutes to figure out I LOVE irises if he was at my place. A nice bouquet of irises and you can win me over :)

Haven't been there yet, or seen her more than a couple of times on one weekend. Mostly I've been talking with her on the phone and via ICQ.

I know: I'll get her a llama! Nothing says "I llike you" llike a llama.

How about some mottled pink/white roses around a sunflower?
|
I would get her a dozen roses, your choice and take her out for a nice dinner. Reservations might be scarce at this point. Good luck.
|
Dinner and/or just being physically present is out, unfortunately. She's around 3 hours away, and I'm going to be busy that weekend.
I'm not asking about anything other than the flowers. |
I like the two of each color rose, but roses are so overdone, try to find some other flower, like tulips or even daisies if you want to be cute about it.
|
You met two weekends ago? Ok.. Roses are a nice idea but if you just met.. it's overkill. I think you should find out what her favorite flower is or just get her a mixture of something lovely.
However, if you do get her roses, make it anywhere from 3-6 and not red ones. I believe lighter pale colored roses would be most suitable for a new friendship. |

Have fun! |
Sent a mix of red and white tulips. Y'all are right, that I should have gone with something cheaper, but this was easy so I did it. I generally find flowers easy, 'cause I just order them and FTD.com handles the details. :D
|
I think you made a good decision with tulips instead of the roses, Denim. Update us on the situation with her when you can.
|
Well, she says she likes the tulips. Mission accomplished!
|
And now, it's time for the dim lights and the soft music. :D
|
Well, except she's in New York state and I'm at a science fiction convention in Boston. If she'd been here... well, they gave me a suite. With a bottle of wine and a tray of crackers, cheese, strawberries and grapes. Would have been fun. :( Not that I'm complaining, really.
