What to wear to the gym?

I've never been to the gym before and was wondering what I should wear to comfortably work out? I don't want to go there overdressed.

plain t-shirt and workout pants or shorts is usual starting atire.

myself i go with workout pants and a tank top (2" straps). i see some guys in there in jeans and a sweater and it just looks odd, like they are there to socialize and not to work out.

I usually wear a sleeveless t-shirt, basketball shorts, and my running shoes. At the gym I go to I've seen people wear just about anything. Some guys will come in there working out in blue jeans, polos and boots. Guess it's just what ever you feel comfortable in. Most people are so into their workouts that they won't be paying attention to what your wearing anyways.

Thanks, I just want to be comfortable. I'm not really concerned with what people think.

You are supposed to wear a neon tank top (make sure it says gold's gym on it), parachute pants, a fanny pack, and a bandana.

Personally I am pretty no frills, I wear black warmup pants or basketball shorts and a white t-shirt and sometimes a beanie if I am cold.

ROFL...

If only it weren't true.

Just wear what's comfortable. I like track pants and t-shirt/tanktop, and a sweatshirt if it's too cold.

edit: Don't wear sandals. I've heard stories, they usually end like this: "Keeeerrr-KKRUNNCH!!!"

I spent $3 on gym shorts at Walmart. The ones that are grey and have the drawstring. I need stuff to be loose not to feel constricted. I wear that and a two sizes too large t-shirt. I bought some really good tennis shoes just for the times I jog on the treadmill. You will notice many women dress in really tight clothes while the guys are all about comfort.

Good god, if you were serious about that, I would have told you to say "hi" next time I bumped into you in my gym. So very sad.

Wear a loose fitting shirt, but cut the sleeves off first. Wouldn't want your arms to go unappreciated.

I usually just wear a t-shirt that isn't too long. If the t-shirt is too long it sometimes gets in the way, or feels uncomfortable. Sometimes I'll wear a t-shirt that is long (only because I like it) and tuck it in.

For pants I'll wear any soft-materialed shorts. I see some people use the wind pants and mesh long pants. I personally don't like wearing that when I'm working out, because that makes my legs too sweaty.

I prefer the sleeveless shirts with the adidas warm up pants.

If I wear a tank top I feel like i'm showing off, does anyone else get that feeling?

A short-sleeved or sleeveless shirt is usually my style (at my school's weight-room, I can usually find time to get into the weight-room without having to share with anybody else, so my favorite's goin' all-out shirtless...hey, it's comfortable).

As for the shorts...heck, soft shorts do the trick. Nothing special to it, really.

Make sure you are comfy but also stay warm. If the gym is cool, you can even use a long sleeve t-shirt or sweat shirt. Keeping a little warm keeps the muscles working well.

Nah. I like it for a few reasons. It keeps me cooler, i hate sweating like a madman. I like to see the definition when i'm actually lifting, that way i can see where i need to improve. Also its sort of a running joke with my friends that its just fun to wear little shirts when working out.

its just a gym so i dont consider it showing off, i'm just there to work out and get it done with. if someone felt comfortable working out in a giant pink banana suit then it would look odd, but good for them if they get their work out done effectively in it.

basically i think that you should just wear whatever you want that you can get a good workout in. focus on being comfortable and get in a solid work out every time you enter the gym.

T-shirt and sweatpants/warmup pants. I prefer a cotton t with sleeves rather than without, because when it's hot the cotton sleeves wick up all the armpit sweat, which otherwise drips down the bod in a way I find uncomfortable. I like sweatpants rather than shorts even in hot weather, because the warmer leg muscles are, the looser they are.

A leotard and leg warmers would be a good start. Also if you tend to get cold, find a sweatshirt and cut the neckline out of it.

I just wear an oldish tshirt and soccer shorts. Nice and comfortable, easy to move in, and my tshirt catches the sweat (unlike singlets, like someone earlier said). For shoes, just comfy running shoes, with lots of breathing area, keeping the feet cool is good.

I wear a sweatshirt (unless it's over 75F outside) and either sweatpants or those warmup type pants. The sweatshirt is like an instant towel and also hides my skinnyness.

Just a fairly loose t-shirt and a pair of shorts or nylon workout pants (make sure the shorts are not too small, short, etc)

I wear a loose-fitting t-shirt, basketball shorts if it's somewhat warm, track pants over basketball shorts if it's deathly cold out. I live 2 minutes away from free gym access.

No - I always thought people wore tank tops so they could leave as much sweat as possible behind for the next person who uses the machine.

T-shirts that are too nasty for work, shorts that cover the ole privates and of course tennis shoes.

If I wear a tank top, I feel like people are counting the zits on my back, ha ha. No really.....

I tend to wear basketball shorts and a tee shirt, I guess anything that you can move freely in is good.

Sleeveless T-shirt, Basketball shorts and running shoes. It seems that this is the most common outfit at the Gym.
