A couple of quick questions for a quick exercise.

I enjoy doing Hindu push-ups every morning and before I go to bed.

I was just wondering if it is better to try to do as many as I can in one go. - I can do 45 - 55 until I drop from lack of breath. Or whether it is better to stop every 15-20 reps to take a short break before doing more. - I did 120 reps this way today, doing 15 followed by a 20 second break, etc.

Also if I were going for stamina, would it be better to push myself until I drop dead or stop once the breathing becomes too difficult.

Cheers.

Pushups will only build stamina. Logic says the pushup won't build strength unless you're kind of weak to begin with. As far as how many to do? Well a combination of both. Do as many as you can till you are fatigued. Rest for a min or so and crank out another set. Do 3 or 4 sets. THEN do another few sets doing different variation of the pushup to stimulate other parts of your chest muscles. Like I said though, you will not gain any muscle from these, just endurance.

Thing of a declined pushup. Legs are raised in back. I see older people and women doing these on those swiss balls .

It's like the dive-bomber push-up without the second motion of going back down. I like it over the dive-bomber because breathing is easier for me.

here is a link: http://www.trainforstrength.com/ex-1.shtml

They are supposed to be better at enhancing stamina then regular pushups.

Plan9,

When you say pushups give you no muscle, only endurance, does that mean they also give you no functional strength?

Also, why don't they give you muscle?

Well, to make it simple, for a muscle to grow in size and strength you must continually increase the resistance to which it is being subjected to. Muscles are made up of a shitload of muscle fibers consisting of muscle cells. When a muscle lifts a weight the muscle fibers contract and the muscle cells either contract or don't contract at all, it is important (if you are trying to build muscle) to make sure to use maximum weight combined with strict form to ensure all the muscle cells are contract. If you always trained at the same weight, your muscles would plateau, and you would not see anymore growth.

Ok, after reading that....now consider that while doing a pushup you are only lifting about 40-45% of your actual bodyweight... well... to put it bluntly, that aint gonna do shit for your muscles nor strength .
