cjayemail 11-04-2003 07:52 PM

my friend has a 5' snake caged in his back yard, im too afraid to actually play around with it, thats just too much for me, ill stick with my dogs

bundy 11-04-2003 08:42 PM

ok, i´ll bite (sorry, bad pun)...
i don´t know very much about keeping reptiles, so why is it called ´hot´?
is that the term used for keeping Rattlesnakes in particular, or is it just in reference to a heater lamp they may need?

thats a pretty snake...
Whoaitsz (thanks dude) put up a link for heaps of reptile info, and i´ve got to say, most of those American snakes like the rattler and the corn snake are really very attractive.
especially in comparison to the dirty brown snakes we have here.

Jesus Pimp 11-04-2003 08:46 PM

Only in my trousers... :D

Snakebyt 11-04-2003 08:51 PM

here in the states, we call venemous snakes "hot", so i refer to all venemous snakes as hots. I have had so many nonvenemous snakes over the years i kinda got bored with them and wanted a new challence, so i started keeping hots. and i love my rattlers, great snakes, but you aussies have got some really cool stuff down there as well

WhoaitsZ 11-04-2003 11:08 PM

G o r g e o u s, dude!

I am an animal fanatic, especially reptiles (though I prefer lizards), and I always wanted a snake. My mom is phobic of them, though.

Got anything else? I currently have six leopard geckos.

Since you enjoy the idea of danger, you probably don’t milk them, right?

Pretty pretty!

Snakebyt 11-04-2003 11:22 PM

i dont milk them, too much involved to do any good.. i have a long list of stuff i have, and currently i have 24 leopard geckos myself. mostly hypo tangerines and carrot tails.. hoping this will be a good breeding season
Going to try to breed my green tree pythons for the first time this year too

General discussion

Snake and owner pic.

Superb stuff there.

Man I'm straight,but I love your snake.

castex 11-05-2003 08:35 AM

I'm scared, and you're both miles and miles away. Still, I clicked...

Orodinn 11-05-2003 08:39 AM

hmmm, what's the point of having an animal if you can't pet it? and a snake is definitely a non petable animal.

The point of haveing a snake, or any reptile for that matter, is to observe the way they act. I've had snakes before, and I didn't get them because I wanted a pet, a freind, or a guardian. I got them because they are cool animals, beautiful in their simplicity.

Hanxter 11-05-2003 10:23 AM

ever been bit?

WhoaitsZ 11-05-2003 11:06 AM

...... presume for oneself, please.

as for venemous snakes, yeah, they aren't 'petable', but all others are. and lizards tend to get major personalities. it just takes a lot of time to get to know them.

observation is excellent. but i am in it for everything. they make good companians.

my oldest leo is just a designer. i have one young, gorgeous tangerine .. <img src="http://www.whoaitsz.com/images/family&pets/3juvies.jpg">

my others are hard to determine just yet.

have you ever sold any breeders? I could use a tangerine male that has already been bred.....

I havent been bitten by any venomous snakes so far, but as far as non venomous.. hundreds or times, i have been doing this since about 91, worked in pet stores that specialised in reptiles for over 5 years, and then my personal collection, i have been bit my fair share hence my nickname :)

i have sold several in the past, right now i just have 1 male that i would consider getting rid of, he started off as a really nice male, but now has some black on him. Here are some pics from this past summer.
here is the pic from the breeder
http://www.hubcitygeckos.com/malehypo.jpg

here is a pic i took about a month after i got him
http://www.hubcitygeckos.com/mhypo.jpg

if you want, i can try to get a current pic of him, his color isnt that freat right now because im cooling him for breeding. or if you are looking let me know, i know several good breeders

gabshu 11-06-2003 08:17 AM

wow pretty reptiles. I always thought they were yuk, but those leopard geckos are amazing. I think I'll just stick to domestic livestock for now but those animals are beautiful.

I don't know anything about snakes, but is there a real danger that they will escape their cages and come at you in the middle of the night or something?

Snakebyt 11-06-2003 11:20 AM

since i keep venomous snakes, i make sure all my cages are escape proof, and locked, well for the snakes that is.. the geckos are kept in a rack system.

Plan9Senior 11-06-2003 11:26 AM

I guess I am the only one who thinks owning reptiles is just wrong. /shrug

Eldaire 11-06-2003 12:33 PM

AHHHH!!!! Scary! Scary! Get 'em off! Get 'em off! They're everywhere! They're in my hair! Run for your lives! The invisible snake gods have come from the mountains to bring doom to us all! AHHHH!!!!

a2k 11-06-2003 12:40 PM

Those geckos are really cool. And keeping a "hot" snake sounds interesting. What do you have medicine nearby in case you get bit?

Snakebyt 11-06-2003 12:48 PM

there is antivenom for the rattlesnakes at the local hospital, and i have access to the stuff i need for my others

Why? just wondering

Snakebyt 11-06-2003 01:18 PM

Some people believe that caging any aminal is wrong, but here is my view on the subject.
I think they have it way better in captivity than in the wild. They are guranteed meals and comfy temps. They dont have to deal with droughts or times when food/water is not available like in the wild. They do not have to worry about parasites like in the wild. And in most cases, if there is somthing wrong, they get medical attention, where as in the wild, they would have to suffer

I guess you could use the same argument to justify keeping a human as a pet in a cage. Anyhow, we will just have to agree to disagree about this subject :). Neat looking snake though.

Especially have way better lives with people like you and Whoaitsz taking care of them. I have to admit those gecko's look extremely kick ass. The colors just dazzle me!

Snakebyt,
I'm pleased you're here sharing your deep connection to these great animals with us!
Thanks for the excellent contribution.
You give us a lot to think about.
People and animals are one of the significant topics in our experience. It is a relationship that illuminates being alive!

yabobo 11-09-2003 02:39 PM

You're looking at the camera mistake #1
You are holding him too close to your body #2
He can and will eventually strike and get your pecker or abdomen.
Really bad news. Always respect your snakes and
keep full attention on them and not the camera.
I've been doing "hot"snakes for thirty years.
Never let your guard down or become complacent.
:hmm:
Good luck and many happy years to go!

Snakebyt 11-09-2003 03:26 PM

i know about becoming complacent around them, and what can happen if you do. My old boss took a hit from a viridis and it messed him up pretty bad. lost 25% of the bone in his thumb from it. This wasnt his first bite either, just about a month earlier he recieved a dry bite from a atrox, gave us all a scare.

11-09-2003 03:41 PM

No “hot snakes” now. Had to get rid of my Coral a few years back.. he bit my cousin. The dumbass had no idea…

He learned his lesson though. DON”T assume all pets are friendly.

Unfortunately, this one got away, Albino lavender chain king, not venomous. However an amazing looking creature.

crewsor 11-09-2003 03:52 PM

Cool snake. You wouldn't find me handling one though. Nice to look at. No need for me to touch.:D

hunnychile 11-09-2003 04:35 PM

Oh yuck!!!!!
That's just wrong.

Bet you have quiet Saturday nights, too.

JStrider 11-09-2003 04:46 PM

hey.. i didnt notice that you were in Lubbock too.. ever been to Walters World of Pets? I worked there for aabout a year and a half

JStrider 11-10-2003 06:17 PM

yup... i got my first gecko at pets plus... and my second online... but ive gotten supplies and bunches of crickets and mealies there...great little store...

the people that run the dorms found out about my geckos and their trying to make me get them out of the dorms... ugh pain in the ass... im going to some of the higher ups and see if i can get the animal rule changed or something...

Snakebyt 11-11-2003 12:11 AM

you would not believe the animals i have sold to people that lived in the dorms. snakes, lizards, Prairie dogs,Sugar Gliders, rats, mice, hampsters just about everything is kept in those dorms. Put them in your closet for a while, and they will think you got rid of them

Snakebyt 11-11-2003 12:12 AM

where online did you order yours?

World's King 11-11-2003 12:20 PM

To be honest.

All those things scare the shit outta me.

WhoaitsZ 11-11-2003 04:38 PM

.... somehw i forgot about this thread.

snakebyte. he's gorgeous. send me info if you're willing to part.

i've been hoping for some breeding action without cooling em down. no luck :(

as for keeping animals in a cage... i think it depends entirely on the person who owns the creature. many people who are big time into lizards keep theirs out all the time.

the only thing i really frown at are people who have like one.... and never do anything with it.. it's fuckin sad.

JStrider 11-11-2003 09:50 PM

i got mine at www.vmsherp.com really good at communicating... shipped really well... animal in perfect health... great place to order from...(just dont use usps express! my overnight took 2 nights! i was freaking out!.... but thats what i get for being stingy)

as for just putting em in my closet... a friend of mine said she would keep em... after a week or so ill bring em back here...

Snakebyt 11-11-2003 09:53 PM

I used to ship USPS alot, sometime it takes 2 days, depending on where it is coming from or going to, i never had any problems with it. Glad that it is doing well for you, and glad that you found a place to keep them for a while. Any plans for breeding?
