For those of you who don't speak Japanese this translation was kindly provided by a Friend of mine.

Do you (plural) understand Japanese?

Quote:

shirimasen! wakarimasu ne..
Don't know! Understand (don't you!)

Quote:

Understand Japanese a little. But (I'm) not good.

nihongo no benkyoshimasu!
(I) do the study of Japanese!

Until this point the Japanese was natural, straight from the text book, but natural. The lack of subjects is normal once they have been mentioned once, as probably happened at the beginning of this conversation. The use of "no" with "shimasu" is completely wrong although understandable from a beginner.

Ratman 09-08-2003 08:28 AM

Boku mo nihongo o hanashimasu. Mo jozunai. Romanji de kaite wa daikirai!

aisoku 09-08-2003 12:56 PM

redravin, I agree with your friend to some point :)

Japanese people (generally speaking, of course) try to be polite, not by just congugating their verbs -imasu, but also by being indirect (in some cases, extremely indirect); it's a form of being humble, by not directly stating what you have to say, but making it understood, even if it takes more (or less) words to say. Generally speaking what 'shirimasen!' would be understood to be (After already asking anatatachi wa nihongo ga wakarimasu ka) would be something like the following:

I don't know (if you understand japanese, but could find out by you telling me).

Admittingly, instead of wakarimasu ne, I should have probably used 'wakatte imasu ne'... in which case it would have translated to:

You're understanding me (aren't you?)

Same idea behind using the particle 'no' with suru. Not the best idea I understand, but if I was to say 'nihongo no benkyo shite!' (I'm currently studying/learning japanese), I believe it would be perfectly acceptable. After all, japanese _is_ what I'm learning..

But again, I appreciate his input, and as usual, i'm probably completely wrong :D

I took japanese 1 in highscool and I absolutely loved it.
We just finished all of the Hiragana and we started to get into katakana. I really wish I could take it without all of the other courses that I had. Someday I would really like to study it farther in depth.

If anyone is interested we learned through a program called Irasshai (Welcome). Their homepage is here..

http://www.gpb.org/peachstar/irasshai/homepg.htm

Its a pretty fun course. You watch a video one day along with a sheet that you fill in as you watch the movie. The next day you have an AI lesson with a real japanese instructor through the telephone, AI = Audio Intereaction, with whom you go through a book with. Its actually quite fun. And while the video's are corny you learn very fast and its very effective.

It really sucks though, because when you dont use it for a while, like any language.. you tend to forget some things. Its been a few months and I can still remember a lot of stuff though.. so I guess the class worked well.

Sayoonara!

I understood "teaching assistant." Does that count?

Seriously, the study of japanese sounds intriguing.
Is the inflection very difficult to master?

twotimesadingo 09-18-2003 05:05 PM

taking my third semester of it now...

i understood everything 'cept seizei... the damned showoff :)

cherylcannady 09-19-2003 10:20 AM

konbonha everybody!

I really can't speak Japanese very well, but I can read romanji and understand most of it. I didn't learn enough kanji to actually be able to read Japanese publications, though. I took a year of college nihongo. And after all that, I can be relatively polite to people in Japanese, and I can greet people, and excuse myself.

Thanks for the thread. Makes me want to dig out my textbook again.

Lunchbox7 09-19-2003 01:55 PM

I used to know many years ago though I wasnt good. Now I can only remember a few phrases and words. But I remember the most important one: "Anata wa kambeki desu".

5-nen mae kara nihongo o benkyou shite,

(Been studying japanese since 5 years ago)

kyounen daigaku no teaching assistant deshita

(last year I was a university teaching assistant (for japanese))

2-nen mae... daigaku no nihongo no kurabu no leader deshita

(2 years ago, I was the leader/president of the university's Japanese Students association/culture club) (and I'm WHITE!!! heh first white president)

kanji to kana no kaki-koto to yomi-koto ga dekimasu.

(I can read and write kanji and kana)

demo, kaiwa ha mou muzukashii desu yo!

(But conversation is still difficult for me!)

sugu nihon e ikitai no desu yo!

(MUST go to japan SOON!!!!)

Japanese is a beautiful language... the inflection/pronounciation is relatively easy if you practice simply making the sounds correctly enough... because each character/syllable will always be pronounced the same. Like 'ra' will always be read the same way, none of that changing sound crap like in english.

Lunchbox7: haha nice useful phrase!"You are perfect" - Useful for picking up Japanese girls ;)

laxative 09-22-2003 12:40 AM

Tomare muchas drogas pero no tengo dinero.

I took a year of Japanese and two years of Spanish. That's what I remember.

Jesus Pimp 09-22-2003 06:47 AM

I took a Japanese course in college but haven't since I transferred schools and graduated college. So now I want to get back into it. What's the best thing to do? Get books, audio instruction? I checked out local colleges but no one is offering Japanese. I know how to speak and write chinese so katakana is no problem for me.

mystmarimatt 09-22-2003 11:59 PM

oh my god, it's like being back in high school. liked the language, hated the class and the teacher...ugh...

seizei 09-27-2003 11:08 AM

Jesus Pimp: you NEED NEED NEED to use audio tapes until you can pronounce the syllables correctly. When I started, I was just repeating the sounds with the syllable chart and a tape for about a month, until my feeble Canadian tongue could say the sounds right. Otherwise, even if you become fluent, if you can't say your 'r's correctly, you'll sound like a dumbass.

After that, study lots to increase your vocabulary, and even more important, find a place where you can go and speak to japanese people (IN JAPANESE). OTherwise you'll have all this info in your head that you can't make come out through your mouth

numberfive 09-29-2003 12:13 AM

Haha, high school memories indeed. Teacher had no control over the class, which means par-tay. So although I know little to no Japanese, it was an easy A, free period with friends and the colleges like the fact that I have 3 years of it.

*remembers hitting the pipe in the back of Japanese class*

Go high school!

...desu.

:)
