I have the croup.

No, seriously. I have the croup. Big barky coughs and so much trouble sleeping. The doc put me on Tessalon perles and I'm taking sudafed for my sinuses and ibuprofen for the headache. The perles wear off after about six hours (dose timing is every eight hours), and I don't mind a hot toddy but that won't do at work. Any suggestions for something to get me through the workday? I'm allergic to most cough suppressant medication-- if it has a narcotic (codeine) or narcotic derivative (dextromethorphan), I throw it up almost immediately. (It's actually kind of amazing how quickly my body reacts to it! "Nope! Nope! OUT!")

The croup, y'all. Damn. That's a little kid's illness! It's not fair!!!

Crohn's, has nothing to do with the croup.

I hope you get better soon StellaLuna. I've never had the croup as far as I know. How do you get it?

As for your cough, try some hot green tea. No sweetener or any of that other crap, just pure green tea. It's always worked for me

Good luck with your cough. I'm currently fighting a nasty cold myself.

My girls all had it when they were babies. I think that a vaporizer (is that the hot one??) in their bedroom at night helped a lot.

Feel better!

morroccan pomegranate red tea (celestial seasonings even makes it) with a little honey.
it's roobios tea and it worked awesome for me when i had severe bronchitis. can only guess it would work with the croup?

on a side note, the children's hospital here have seen 18 cases of pertussis since june and double that of croup and it's not even respiratory season officially!

as a person with chronic bronchitis since birth I can say the ONLY thing (outside of narcotic cough meds) that even comes close to helping me is homemade lemon/honey tea

1 lemon
2 cups of water
honey
sugar

cut the lemon in half and squeeze them into a small saucepan then cut up the rinds of one have into big hunks and put them in the pan, cover with about 1/2 cup honey (add more or less according to your taste...I like more than that) so the same with the sugar, add two cups of water and cook over medium heat stirring until mixed well and sugar is melted, then bring it to a boil, pour into a cup with a few of the rinds and drink

When I was little, my grandma used to make a mixture of whiskey (bourbon), lemon juice and honey for me. (Nowadays CPS and HHS would have her hauled off in handcuffs) There is still no better cough remedy, that I have ever found. I just take one of those 10oz jelly jars (the kind with the cartoon characters on 'em), mix up about a third of the glass with whiskey, add some honey (I dunno how much really. I just eyeball it. Maybe 3 tablespoons?), and add a long squirt of lemon juice. Burns like motherfucker going down, especially after you've coughed your throat raw, but you immediately start to "feel" it working. Repeat 3 times in 15-20 minute intervals and it'll knock the cough right out of you and you'll sleep like a little baby. Besides...even if it doesn't work...after 3 glasses of that mixture...you won't really care anymore. No, seriously, it's always worked for me. Old granny O'Rights knew a thing or two.
Hope you feel better soon.

with me it was moonshine lol My great grandaddy made it and I'd get a heaping tablespoon of sugar drenched in the stuff, the next dose would be less sugar, and so on. Basically they probably made me so drunk I'd pass out lol

I still prefer that to the recipe I posted above and fortunately I have access to some good old fashioned NC shine

Use a vaporizer, like jewels suggested, get the fresh air fres suggested, and drink plenty of the hot liquids everyone else suggested. Croup is unpleasant and can be dangerous. I've had a couple kids who had to go to the ER because of the croup.

Take care of yourself, Stella.

Wow, okay, ratbastid wasn't kidding when he said a lot of people responded! I'm going to wade on through...
--WTF... Crohn's? You're damn straight I'm glad I don't have it, and I wish I had started this thread as "diseases I'm so glad I don't have".
--I'm giving up on the Tessalon, it's not doing a damn thing for me but making me sleepy and dizzy. Sudafed is clearing my head and I'm staying hydrated. Lots of water, lots of tea, no dairy, and my appetite came back tonight YAY!
--Mmm, hot toddies. I'm actually going to fix one before my nice hot bath and another couple before bed and hope it works tonight. Last night (and every night for about a week) I was awake until almost 2:00, staring at the ceiling and miserable beyond belief.
--I'll keep the humidifier going. My room feels like the prettiest part of the rain forest right now but I can't deny it's helping. Lurkette loaded it up with essential oils so I'm getting good steam, plus steamy calm and steamy relaxation and steamy soul-soothing goodness.

Love you guys and thank you.

Oh, and The_Jazz... it's worth it. Totally absolutely ridiculously worth it.

I've tried those pearls, they didn't do anything for me. Same goes for the codeine-based stuff. The only thing that keeps me from coughing while sleeping when I'm sick is an over-the-counter spray: Cepacol Sore Throat Dual Relief Spray. The active ingredients are dyclonine hydrochloride and glycerin.

Probably not. You don't have kids, and if you ever had it, you were likely to young to remember. Bet your mother does, though. Odds are good that you kept her up all night long, for days on end, by your coughing and crying.
It's a respiratory disease common in very young children, usually infants. It's a nasty barking cough coupled with difficulty in breathing. It is, as I recall, a form of influenza.

Never heard of an adult getting it, but there have been stranger things.

Well, the update--
The drunk wore off at about 3 AM and I felt worse than ever. I went to work today and ended up getting sent home after the cleaning lady (bless her) found me in the bathroom coughing, gagging, and crying. I'm taking the codeine/phenergan syrup and started antibiotics today.

I miss feeling well.

Adult croup is usually considered much more serious than children's croup. Were you really diagnosed with croup?

Either way being so sick you have difficulty breathing and sleeping sucks and I hope you get better soon. If you really have adult croup please take care of yourself.

Good job you don't have plague or syphilis either.

This is a silly idea.

I'm really sorry to hear you've got a respiratory infection. I have family history of asthma and well remember midnight calls from my grandmother (who lived at the other end of town) unable to talk, coughing and gasping - which was enough to make my mother know what was up and go to help.

Her treatment for our coughs as children was spoonfulls of cherry brandy. Seems we all had "irresponsible" elders.

Anything with capsacin is good to supress the cough reflex, so if you like chillies, have a Thai red curry.

She's much better. Since we (but particularly her) were sick all October, we're declaring November a "do-over" month. We re-celebrated Stella's October 2 birthday on November 2... We're just re-doing October entirely. Might do another halloween at the end of the month, too.

They should have Ocober during the summer - that way you'd get an extra couple of hours of Trick or Treating time.
