good start

I have started running for about 20-30 minutes a day after work. I plan on doing this for the whole summer and then possibly at school as well. Is this a good way to start getting into shape, namely losing some weight? I don't really like exercising so this is all new to me. thanks

Personally, running has had a great impact on my fitness, both stamina-wise and weight-wise. I only wish I had the time to do it more often. To answer your question more fully though, as running is a great cardio workout, it will definitely help you lose weight. Lately I've been making the mistake of increasing my food intake because my "runs compensate for it..." make sure you don't do that, or else your weight loss will be minimal at best.

Running is great for weight loss and cardio fitness but it can take its toll on your body. If at all possible, run on grass eg a football field.

If you've never run before, definitely start out slow. Injuring yourself early on in a fitness plan is a real mood-killer. Start with 30 minute walks, then work up to 20 minute jogs. Just stay in tune with your body, if you aren't feeling good that day, don't run!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I just ran for 20 minutes again today and it is already so much easier to do. The first few times I couldn't run the whole time, but this time 20 minutes seemed pretty easy.

I wish I could run, but my knees are bad enough as it is. Non-impact cardio for me.
