Diabetes and MASSIVELY high blood sugar

Just curious if anyone has ever heard of this before.

A very close friend of our family, an 18 year old girl (pictured in this thread) found out in a pretty horrible way that she is diabetic. She hadn't been feeling well and had lost a lot of weight quickly so she went to the doctor. Yesterday they called her and had her mom take her to the hospital ASAP as her blood sugar was 799. I didn't know you could have such a high blood sugar and not be in diabetic coma. Over the course of last night, her blood sugar spiked to 935 before they brought it back down. I guess she's pretty much acting like her usual self... how is that even possible?! I don't have diabetes, but I have friends and family that do. I've never even heard of such a high level. Has anyone else?

I hope I'm not the only one who didn't know what a normal blood sugar amount was, and had to look it up.

For reference:

So yea, those numbers seem rather.. extraordinary.

I remember at Dave's grandmothers wake, his Aunt's shot up to 920 and she was still functioning (she knows she's a diabetic though and knew it was going up....she just couldnt get it down) so yeah....its possible....its not a good thing, but its possible

yeah Jinn, even after eating a meal your blood sugar shouldn't be higher than 150.

Shani, thanks for that info. I've just never heard of it that high before. 500-600 can become very bad and over 700 is usually a diabetic coma as far as I knew. Those numbers are, of course, estimates... but 900+? Yikes!

Ack, I really need to stop posting on TM's lappy...

Highest I ever saw was 1053. The person was awake and talking but not completely with it. Took a couple of days on an insulin drip for it to get close to normal.

Brittle diabetics can spike that high very easily though they typically are around 500-600 when they come in.

Jinn, the only reason I knew it was suppose to be around 100 is because of advertisements. They may be of some use after all...

High blood sugars can lead to coma as well. It is a different situation entirely from low blood sugars.
