Why Do People Key My Car?
For those of you don't know what keying is, it is when someone takes a key and scrapes it across your car's body.
For some reason, I keep on finding new key marks on the trunk of my civic and I don't know why people keep keying my car. Are there reasons why people do this? I park my car in different places every day when I park at school, so I don't think any of my enemies would go out of their way to find where I park to key my car. But I don't know why people keep on doing it to my car. It's a black 2000 civic with no modifications. I don't get it!   |
You may have enemies, pissed people off, I really dont know, but i can relate to the somas......
|
I did some Googling and found some other forum threads where people are talking about how people who live in areas with on street parking key cars that are parked in front of their houses where they think they are entitled to park.
I park in a residential area near campus and this might be the case. Does this sound reasonable to anyone? |
It could be for any number of reasons. It could be obnoxious people randomly keying cars and yours is one of them.
It could be that you pissed someone off either knowingly or unknowingly and this is what they consider payback. It could be anything. The only way you'll know for certain is to sit in hiding and wait for the culprit to return and try again. |
They're numbered for a reason please follow them in order.
Step 1: Hide in your trunk, and wait for them. Step 2: Now that you're safely in your trunk, make sure you can open it from the inside. Alas I must go slightly on topic; I don't know why people key your car. It could be, as was suggested above, that you've pissed someone off for some reason, or it could be something as simple as a bored kid. |
if you drive a hummer, i probably keyed it...

If so, it's probably them and they are jealous or jerks. |

One of the very few Negative Karma Moments (tm) I've had was joining in on the keying the car of the goofy kid that wanted to be part of our group. It wasn't that he pissed us off or anything, it just seemed like the thing to do. Nothing more complex. But then, I was a junior in high school, so I hadn't developed a sense of Karma yet. Nowadays, I don't do that kind of stuff, instead I deal with the source of the trouble directly. Sounds like you're dealing with some immature asshole who needs a lesson in Negative Karma..... |
Cause people are assholes.

if its bad then someones after you about somthing. Black shows everything I had a black 00 integra. I had someone lean on the car and when they moved away the jean studds left a scrape. Also rings, watches.. just normal accesories can leave any mark with out trying ..maybe even someones bag as they carried it and walk between cars just enough to make its mark

My car is dark green and I had problems with my friends scuffing their gym bags on the side of my car when they were getting in the back. Unfortunately dark paint shows everything.
|
easy solution, bear trap by the foot of your trunk. camoflauge it with trash. watch the fun.
take your liscence plate off too. just in case. |
My car sales guy told me that's why the colour grey or silver is so popular. It doesn't show the scratches like other colours.
The only down side is that you end up with a grey or silver coloured vehicle. Not only is it ugly, it terribly common. |

Anyways, be thankful all they're doing is keying your car hun. Last year my car was hit 4 times since moving to the godforsaken city of Lubbock. 1st Time: I was parked in a regular spot, nothing out of the ordinary and I come back and my cars taillight is hanging out and my bumper has been pushed onto my back wheel as well as cracking the paint. 2nd Time: I parked in a Target parking lot, someone decides there isn't enough space to back out and hits my car on the OTHER side of my bumper and knocks that taillight out. No note, nothing. I called the security office to ask about the cameras and stuff but apparently the camera was moving when this incident happened. Man I ever find who did it, I'd sue the hell out of em. 3rd Time: I was in the vehicle this time, I was going home for Thanksgiving and I was looking for a parking spot at the airport. Well the guy infront of me decides hes going to backup, surely theres no one behind him, except you know me. So I've got someone behind me, I can't back up and he keeps going , I'm honking my horn and he slams into me. I had to catch me flight so I told him to just go and I called him an idiot on his way back to the car. So yes people, look before you backup. 4th Time: Car got a door opened up on it. So theres my story, don't complain about your key marks...it could be other peoples bumpers instead. :) Oh and to top it off my parents don't me to just DEAL with it since it's just half a cars worth of cracked paint and pushed in bumpers. |
I've been tempted to key the people who park in the "unofficial" loading zone for Domino's delivery drivers. they bring thier goddamn hummer pulling a boat behind it and take up 4 parking spaces so they can walk two blocks down the road and eat at some fancy resturaunt while disrupting the flow of our delivery drivers EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT.
It's quite aggrivating, technically, yeah, they can park there, but they're being rude, it's quite obvious that delivery drivers are constantly pulling in and out of this sidewalk parking. its usually open though because we're so busy on friday nights that there are no cars there. oh well, our boss doesn't care enough to work with the town to make it a loading zone. he entertained the idea for a while because it upset him too but he doesn't have to deal with it because he doesn't have to park a block from the store to pick up his next delivery, i do. :( I'm going to be so happy when I get out of that place. |

"I wish I could catch him doing it. It would almost be worth it just to catch him" |
4 or 5 years ago, went to park at my community college in the (gigantic) parking lot, and noticed a nice, new (I'm not a car guy, but it didn't look old) porsche taking up to front two spots in one row. I mean, this guy had to make an effort to park at that angle, like he wanted people to notice his porsche. So I noticed it while looking for a spot, and made a point to key his trunk with one fluid swipe when I walked by it. Never broke my stride, and never questioned it since.
But now... that I think back on it and read this thread... I'm pissed off that it was a silver porsche and nobody would see the scratch. :/ |

Ooh, ooh!!! I had an idiot do that once in high school. Only trouble was he left just enough room for me to slide my big assed '64 chevy truck in beside his driver's door with about 3 inches to spare. I pulled in, crawled out through the camper's boot, and out the rear. When I came out, he was waiting and he was PISSED! I just crawled in the same way I came out, fired it up and backed out. Sorry about the threadjack.... |

...So, I'm assuming that the people who are keying your car are ones who would've stolen it instead, but since they couldn't for whatever reason, they decided to key it. Anyway, my friend wrecked the left bumper of my car and the front light doesn't work and there was a little hole torn near it. I heard some laughing outside my apartment one day and later on I noticed that the hole had been torn into and made bigger... Anyway, we live in a ghetto world. I know a guy who once lived a wild life, got fired for having his 9mm fall out of his pocket when working at Burger King. Anyway, he has cleaned up his act and has a family now, but the car lot he owns got broken into and vandalized. What he used to do was done to him, years later in his adulthood! Irony. |
I couldn't tell you, I only key Jeeps.

And when did their not wanting to have their investment dinged surpass my want to have a parking spot. If you spend a million dollars on a car you are assuming that risk, and if you only want to visit places with 8 foot wide parking spots for fear thats your call. If you are parking in a public lot you get one spot just like me. We are both at risk, I just choose a lower risk than you. Why does one pick a Porsche over a more reasonable car of equal or near performance, or even a gasp lesser car? It's not cause they like risk. And before someone claims that there is no such thing as a more reasonable car lets take an honest look at the performance of a Porsche. /threadjack That sucks I don't know what I can say other than I commiserate with you, I had someone take a baseball bat to my mirror for no good reason I know of one day. |

To those of you who key cars: I hope your cars are destroyed by hit-and-run drivers with no witnesses or evidence.

A few comments:
1. Are you absolutely sure that it's a keying? My fiancee's car has scratch marks all over the trunk but it's from where she put stuff on her trunk when unloading her car. She's even easy on it and the scratches still got there. Looks like a keying but it's just scratches from unloading. 2. You said you don't think your enemies would look for your car. Wait, you have enemies? If you have enemies in school I definitely wouldn't think twice that they could follow your car. 3. It's sort of weird that the only part of your car that is being keyed is the trunk. It makes me think it's not a keying but something else. |
