Painkillers
I've a mean damn toothache, and have been looking for a dentist that I can afford, as this will be a root canal job at the minimum.
But in the meantime, I need to be able to sleep, so... Just to be able to stand existing, I need to easily max out on the max dosage of acetaminophen (500mgx2 x8 per day). This is not enough. So, can I, on top of that, max out on ibuprofen as well, seeing as they're made of different chemical ingredients? I'd like to keep my liver, but just "going to a dentist" isn't financially possible just yet.

I'd go to the doctor and ask about getting something more powerful like Tylenol 3. It's what I was prescribed when I got my wisdom teeth removed, and it works wonders.
Mixing pain meds is almost always a bad idea, and will probably make you ill---but I'm no doctor. Last edited by phukraut; 11-24-2005 at 08:43 PM.. |

Yep, you can damage your liver & kidneys with the wrong mix or dose. Certainly with prolonged use. Maybe find a friend with leftover T3 or vicodin?
I wouldn't have believed this one if I didn't try it. Hold extremely hot water in your mouth. It saved me from a dead molar one weekend until the dentists were available.

Also a product on the market you can buy it at the chemist in Australia- over the counter and its a liquid that you can 'paint' onto your tooth and it makes the whole area go numb over here its called oral-sed. There should be a similar product available to you or have you a dental hospital you can go to? Over here if you go there and wait in emergency you can normallly get 'quick fix' help until your dentist can take a look

Oragel- it numbs the tooth. Ibuprofen is metabolised by the kidneys, and acetominophen by the liver so they can be mixed- usually alternating every 3 hours( tylenol should only be taken every 6-8 hours, not 8x daily), but even at the recommended max dose, acetominophen can cause liver irritation- especially when mixed with other substances metabolised by the liver- like alcohol, or when taken for too long a period of time. Be careful and get that mouth to a dentist!!

I'd say you should be able to mix them. I believe it's Excedrin Migraine that has the extra strength dosage of acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin all in one pill (plus caffine to help supercharge the aspirin).
If you were to do that with seperate pills, I'd do it moderately.

For my past toothaches this would all be academic. They've gone from mild annoyance to kicking my ass in short order. When it's bad the basic OTC relievers are not effective even combined. Time for something narcotic or everything plus alternatives until the good stuff arrives. The hot water thing I mentioned was weird but like I said, it helped. Even had the nurses bring me hot water from their coffee machine while waiting for my prescription stuff.

When those doses of the medication do not work.....taking even more isn't going to do it. OTC painkillers only go so far. When the pain is severe, you need a mild narcotic (not necessarily oxycontin or vicoden or percocet), but tylenol with codeine could do the trick. The dentist could give you a derivative of cocaine (either lidocaine, procaine, etc.) that numbs the gums/tooth. Its a local anesthetic.

Needing a root canal and not having insurance isn't something that makes a dentist decide to pull a tooth. Unless the tooth cannot be saved, or you yourself decide to have it pulled, they're not just going to yank it out without permission. I'm not a dentist, and even I know this much. I don't have insurance, and my tooth did need a root canal. I went and had it done, why pull an otherwise strong (according to the endodontist) tooth? Of course, it cost me $75 for examination, $820 for the root canal, and will cost another $1100 for the crown. That's a lot of money to save a tooth, but I like having teeth so I'll hafta suck it up and give up Sonic for a while.
