hello - I aquired a small heater at auction this weekend.

It looks a lot like this coleman listed on ebay... but it only says "igloo master" on it.

I want to know what fuel to use.

It appears to have a rope type wick, from the fuel tank to the burning chamber, so I was thinking kerosene, but alot of the listings for heaters like the one above list camp gas (white gas)

Does anyone know ? Can white gas be used in a wick type of burner ?

Yep, white gas/Blazo/coleman fuel. Some models allow unleaded gasoline, but that one looks older. Anyway, gasoline stinks all night if you're even semi-enclosed. White gas is burns clean and hot.

Isn't it dangerous to use a heater like that in a small area? (Enclosed space)
A friend of mine lost two friends who used a small heater like that while sleeping in a cabin. Dont mean to sound like your mama. Just watchin out for my fellow tfp peeps.

Anyway, the gas leaked out and they died in their sleep. Be careful!!
(I'm assuming because you titled the thread camp heater, you're using it to go camping)

Well it's more likely to see use in an ice fishing shack or igloo, I would not sleep with something like this lit. 5757, I'll be careful thks.

My new question however, is how to use it? I fueled it up and light the wick, but when I screw on the top part (which appears to have no place whatsoever for air to get in) of course the flame simply goes out.

What am I missing ? Anyone used something like this before ?

Unless that unit is older than dirt, It's going to have a UL listing label on it with product category, and the manufacturer's model number. With that info, you should be able to Google the manufacturer, or chat up the local camping and sporting goods store for a manufacturer site/toll free number. Particularly with heating appliances, I'd be wary of using something until I'd verified that I had proper user data and that it wasn't subject to a recall that I didn't hear about. Maybe the top part is a snuffer.

ahhhhh - the top part seperates in two .. I got it now.... Was so stuck I thought it was one piece.

Be Careful.

As said, you want good ventilation. Ventilation brings in cold air, kind of negating the whole purpose for having a camp heater in the first place.

If you are warm, then that means you are probably not doing it right. You want the air "fresh": meaning not as cold as outside. You still want enough fresh air to keep it cool.

Have you thought about making a stove-pipe adapter to wick away exhaust gasses? Simply getting some aluminum duct pipe and a little stand to prop the pipe up over top of the burner. Works well in an ice-fishing shack.

I would recommend you have a good buddy look at your system to make sure that ventilation is adequate. I have a couple of buddies who are HVAC guys, so they are the experts.

We used to put a roll of toilet paper in an old tobbacco tin, fill it with kerosene and light it. It's cheap, very warm and lasts a long time. All you do is put the lid back on when your done.
Oh yeah, ventilate too
