Home AC

4 bedroom, 2 bath. 1 AC unit. About 10 air vents. Is it ok to close or partially close all but 2 vents? I'm worried the air pressure might rise a bit too much inside the vents and it will wear the machine down quicker.

I've closed a lot of vents with my heater and it seems to work fine, but I don't know if this would have a simple answer.

Really need more info. How old is the unit? Brand?

But really it shouldn't make a difference.

Makes a difference if you have a two storey house with the unit in the basement. It works fine for heat (warm air rises) but not for cooling. My furnace couldn't push much of that cool heavy air up fifteen feet to the second floor, and they told me it would wear out the blower motor trying. I ended up putting another a/c unit (but no heat) in the partly finished third floor attic, to cool the second floor. It is mounted horizontally, lying right on the attic floor. Works great. BTW, I was told that it was all right to close the vents, but make sure to NEVER block the return air registers. No problemo on the upstairs unit, since the return air is on the CEILING.

It sounds like you are trying to cool a particular part of the house by leaving two vents open, etc. Where is the thermostat located in relation to the area you are trying to keep cool? Air pressure isn't the problem, it is air flow throughout the house you might consider.

AC simply works better when all is in balance.
