Martin Luther King
i got this project due friday need some help, if MKL- Martin Luther King were alive today what would he impressed with about american society? What would he be disappointed with?
Thanks for your help!!! |
Watch the Bookdocks episode entitled: "The Return of the King". All you need is there.
|
Umm, he would be disappointed in me doing your homework for you?
Or maybe he would be impressed by me telling you that you won't learn anything by getting others to do what you should be doing on your own! Sorry, I'm in a mood. I think he'd most likely be impressed and disappointed by the inclusion of African-Americans in the political process - up to and including their falling prey to corruption at the same rate as the traditional powers-that-be. He'd also probably be disappointed in the use of the term "African-American" too. |
ehh im done the project i was just wondering what other people would think...
|
no, i agree with you jazz...in fact, if this wasn't a newer user, i'd suggest the thread be killed / closed until a better OP was put forth. kasper: i'd suggest you lead the discussion here. what do you think mlk would approve / disapprove of? you could spur a nice little discussion / debate about this if you tried, but i'm doubting you'll get much out of this thread without more input from you.
i think mlk would be amazed that not only is tang now sold in stores, but if walked into harlem and said "i want some tang," not only would he get a healthy, refreshing orange beverage, but poontang by the handful. i mean, he's dr. martin luther the king, afterall. who wouldn't fuck him? |
I think if MLK was alive today he would be impressed that there are no more slaves in the USA. He would also be impressed in how much he made a difference to history and to the USA. He would be impressed that everyone has equal rights, and that no man comes second from anyone.
MLK would be disappointed in all the hate crimes today. Also the crime rate on African Americans. Also he would be disappointed in the lack of religion compared to the 60’s. I agree with jazz he would also be disappointed in the use of the term African American. |
Slavery was abolished in the US in 1833, around a century before MLK was born. I don't think he'd be surprised that slavery was abolished.
|
i think as much or moreso as just the crime rate on black americans, i think he'd be upset at the rate of black-on-black crime. i think that most aspects of stereotypical black pop culture would cause him trouble. i think he'd be happy that black people no longer have to go to tuskegee or howard or other all-black colleges (athough many of them are great institutions), but can get an education at "1st" rate colleges.
oh, and that tang thing. |

The Emancipation Proclamation was in 1863, so maybe it was a typo. |

Oops!!! That was when the Brits enacted the Slavery Abolition Act 1833. Hahaha....too much history in my head. Okay, so slavery was abolished 66 years before MLK was born. |
i always hated history, i think more about the future then the past....:)
|
To study the future, learn from the past...
I don't think he would be all too impressed with today's society, in my opinion. There is still racism by and far, whether it be unspoken or outspoken. There are still programs (Affirmative Action) that convey obvious racism in today's society. |
I assume you are referring to MLK Junior? For a moment, I thought you were referring to MLK of the Reformation.

MLK Jr, he's not just a street in a bad part of town anymore! Yes, I know I'm going to hell. |
He would be disappointed with Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, the NAACP and the Democratic Party. They have all promoted increased dependance on government.
He would be disappointed with Bush for his preemptive strike against Iraq. He would be disappointed with Hip-Hop culture and the business that supports it because of how it promotes sex and violence. He would fight world poverty and poor heathcare in third world nations. He would be a the forefront in the fight against AIDS. He would be proud of people like Clarance Thomas, Colin Powell and Condelessa Rice, inspite of their politics. He would be proud of the booming black middle class. Over-all I think he would be more proud of what has happened in this country than disappointed. |
If he thought all those things listed above he would be a hypocrite since he advocated for ALL people of color.
The NAACP is NOT exclusively "black". I agree with Ace about Colin Powell, Condi Rice, and Clarence Thomas. I would add Norm Mineta, Elaine Chao, Eric Shinseki, and Alberto Gonzalez as other prominent persons of color making it in a white man's world. Affirmative action is NOT racist. It is commonly misunderstood. If he were truly to get a ton of "pootie tang" (lots of women in a sexual way) then he would be a hypocrite and a person of poor character for his infeidelity. Especially as a man of God. Tang (the orange drink) has been discontinued). If he were alive today, he would be dismissed by the majority of the TFP (atheists, non-Christians) as well as rididuled for his faith in God and as a relgious person. If he were alive today, he would probably be saddened by how many people abuse his message and his Dream. |
WHOA, I'm one of the most atheist people around here, and I basically worship Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I wish that I could do even a fraction of the amount of good he did. He's one of my most important personal heroes and role models.

However, there is a difference between having sex as responsible consenting adults and irresponsible sex often between or involving teenagers. Children born out of marrige is a problem. Unprotected sex with multiple partners is a problem. Fathers not supporting their children is a problem. One would not be a hypocrit to address these issues while enjoying responsible sex with multiple women or men. Quote:

I think MLK seeing Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton might send him over the edge and break his vows of non-violence. :)
