Halo 2 of Half Life 2 -what are you going to get?
I am just wondering what people are thinking about Halo 2 and Half Life 2 and why they are going to get these games. I personally being a PC/counter-strike fan am all for HL2 but thats just me. What do you guys think?
|
Considering Halo 1 was absolute garbage, and HL1 is possibly my favorite game of all time, I would have to go with Half Life 2.
|
Halo 2 all the way.

Actually, I too thought Halo wasn't all that great. Every gaming magazine on earth also
gave GTA 3 freakin high scores, but I've played it maybe for 15 minutes since my brother bought it some year or so ago. It just depends on taste. For me, Goldeneye was a pretty freakin awesome console FPS. People just get overly excited by over-hype, and give scores out the wah-zoo. Anyway, Half-Life 2, if I can get money, and my other graphics card back, and probably a new Hard Drive. :( |

I can't wait for Halo 2 and if Half-Life 2 is all its cracked up to be then i'll be playing that too.
|
Half Life 2 all the way... I've been waiting to long for that game. :)
|
Well, if you only played the PC version, throwing in the console version in the same stew pot is just wrong. I've played both, you're right, the PC version is absolute crap, but the console version, the original version, is pure gold. Halo is the point from which all other console FPS games should be judged.
I mean c'mon, look at FF7, the PC version was like playing fecal matter. The storyline barely saved it from eternal damnation. The PS version has made it one of the best RPGs of all time, possibly the best. Half Life 2 has had waaayyy too much shit surrounding its release. I was really excited initially, but after the letdowns and falsehoods, I won't be buying ti right off. I think a major aspect of buying a game is considering what your money is going to support. I'll buy it after awhile, but I'm getting Halo 2 as soon as I can. |
Never played Halo. HL2 all the way.

Now, I agree with your point that Halo for PC sucked. I can't deny it. It controlled and played like EXACTLY every single PC FPS that I've ever played, except it was 2 years past due both graphically and gameplay-wise. It felt tired, old, and unpolished. Perhaps a better word would be "rushed". Because that's how it felt, it played like it was unfinished, and it became painfully clear in the later stages of the game. I'd say that I have much faith in the series, and that this latest offering will be both enjoyable and critically exquisite. |
You are correct about it being outdated once it landed on the PC and therefore affecting our standards, but I believe even two years before it wouldn't have been very revolutionary. Unless the level design on the Xbox version differs from that of the PC version, please ignore this post. My main gripe with Halo was the repetitiveness, specifically that of the level design and gameplay. Not only did all the levels seem identical, (I believe some were except played backwards) but the swarms of enemies that came at you every five seconds proved to be a little tedious as well. Also keep in mind I have never played the MP, but as far as single player on the PC goes, I found it to be an extremely boring and heavily over-rated game.
|
I'd have to say I only thought Halo was alright. I agree - the PC version was horrendous. A complete let-down. I wanted it to play like the console version, only more precise. I was incredibly disappointed.
Even so, the console version of Halo was, at best, a mediocre game. The multiplayer is fun, but you can only play with 4 people. That kinda went out with, like, Super Nintendo. And it gets a little old. And the single player/coop? The most incredibly unimaginitive levels I've EVER seen in an FPS. Like, worse than Wolf3D or fucking DOOM. The story was great. I'll give it that. But the levels blew big fat chunks. They were repetitive and boring. Playing the levels felt like the worst case of treadmill RPGing times about 800 million bajillion. I can play Halo on X-Box for about 30 minutes, then I feel like I never want to play again (or at least for a week or so). So my vote was for Half-Life 2. Of course, I still want Halo 2 to be good. We'll see. |
I'm gonna get both because I'm not a fucktard fanboy who hates the "competition" just because he doesn't own the other console or have a good enough PC.
They're both going to fantastic games, I'm probably looking more forward to Halo 2 than HL2 because I liked the predecessor in the series a lot more. Either way, both games will own and I will own them both. |
Ill be getting both but I will play half life 2 10x as much. I only like halo on lan.
|
Both, I love release dates within (or on) my b-day.
|
Hl2.. even if I allready bought it. :)
9 more days baby! I dont have an xbox, and even if I did I still wouldnt get Halo2. FPS's belong on computers, not consoles. |
HALO is not meant to be played by yourself. Halo is not DOOM or Quake or anything like that. That's why you have the option to play the campaign cooperatively. Whoever plays Halo alone is not going to experience what Halo is really all about. If Halo really sucked that much, why is it still the most popular basement-garage-livingroom-get-together-and-order-pizza-and-each-chips-social-event-LAN-FPS console game? Halo is all about multiplayer and socializing. I'm getting HL2 and Halo 2, but I'll probably play Halo 2 10x as much as Half-life 2. And as far as Dextrox's comment about FPS belonging on PC, I disagree. I can't play PC FPS games well at all due to carpal tunnel symdome and just plain having horrible wrist accuracy. FPS on console solves this problem for me :)
|
Yeah, I just have horrible accuracy on PC FPS games. That, and my system just isn't good enough to be a gaming rig. I'll be picking up my copy of Halo 2 Monday night at midnight. I'll probably give HL2 a try when they port it to Xbox though.
|
HL2 becaue the it just rocks and i started playing the original HL game in 99 when some friends of mine told me about it gave me a copy and i was hooked. It was the first and bestever. Look how long people played the orignal game and how long counter-strike has lasted with out being re-release as a new game. All the different spin off games that were created by people all over the net like blue shift where you were barney the security guard and team fortress another multiplayer game as well as all the ones created and not sold but shared for free on the net.
Google search results of "half life 2" vs. "halo 2" Half life 2 2,810,000 Halo 2 2,270.000 Half Life is the clear winner |
HL2 and halo 2 but i will first get HL2 then halo 2 early jan or something
|
Both. And Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines. And Pirates!. And Ghost Recon 2.
|

And you know Team Fortress came out WAY before Half Life, as a mod for Quake (the original), right? No, you didn't know that? Oops. Not to mention that the number of times something comes up on webpages is by no means a representation of how good it is. Example? Google "Britney Spears." |

I'm also eagerly awaiting HL2. Gimme both. |
Both. I've ordered Gold on steam four weeks ago and I'm going to get Halo 2 on tuesday.

Not picking sides or anything. |

Half Life 2 already has my money. Probably the only of the two games in the poll I'll play. Someone did mention Pirates! though...
|
Half Life 2 all the way. But the game Im really excited about is VTM: Bloodlines.

definetly half life 2. never did get into the halo craz even though i do think it is a great game. half life 2 will be revolutionary and quite awesomely spectacular.

finaly some one agrees |
I'll get Halo 2 because it's coming out on Tuesday.
For the PC I only really like to play strategy games, so, I probably won't pick up HL 2 until it's out on X-Box. I'm not some fucktard fanboy (love that phrase :) ) as I feel the same way about Doom 3, which all my friends say is fantastic, but I've yet to pick up. |
you can add me to the HL2 camp.
halo was really not all that revolutionary to me for a number of reasons. first of all, take a look at the weapons -- what FPS DOESN'T have the standard weapons you see in halo? you've got your rocket launcher, your full auto rifle, your shotty, your sniper rifle, your pistol...all of the alien weapons were worthless enough that nobody ever used em. they may as well have just been excluded. as was already mentioned, the level design was pretty repetetive, probably due to the limitations of the x-box hardware. keeping along that line, the best visuals you can get out of your TV are considerably worse than a run of the mill CRT monitor. 16 players in one game was also a big thing if i remember correctly. this was around the same time PC gamers were enjoying 60+ person tribes 2 games, with a greater variety of vehicles to play with at that. personally, i think Halo is one of the most overrated games of all time, stemming from the fact that it brings gameplay many people are familiar with to the masses that wouldn't touch PC gaming with a ten foot pole for fear of being labelled dorky  that being said, i think Halo 2 actually does have the potential to innovate and be a good game, but i /know/ that HL2 is doing so, just because i follow it a lot more. So we'll see. :) |
I liked Goldeneye SP much better than Halo singleplayer. But Halo's MP is top notch IMO. I beat Halo in 2 days on Normal the first time I played it. My main gripe is that it is so damned repetitive(environments) as has been brought up before. I just loved Half-Life in every aspect and I still haven't beat it because I suck at the last boss. I have already pre-ordered Half-Life 2 and my computer is complete garbage. I'm just goig to store my copy until I get a new comp.
|
Well, I say half life 2 for 2 reasons:
1. The modding potential that this game has is just awesome. I can't wait to see what people create. Plus the single player looks like it should be quite good too. 2. I don't own and don't want any kind of console. |
I'll be getting both, probably Halo 2 first then HL2 some time down the road though I wont touch either one of them ever again after WOW comes out.
|
Been playing Halo 2 for a few hours now and shit-damn-motherfuckers-from-mars! It is an incredible game! Co-op has never been so fun, damn I'm pissed that I have to work tomorrow... at a freakin' gamestore!!! But I've got a long weekend this week anyway, gonna be h-o-t.
|
HL2.
Two reason's - I dont have a xbox so not waiting for the PC version of Halo2 and I thought Halo1 one rubbish (not my kind of FPS). Plus I got HL2 free :) lol |

Nice ad hominem though. You know that makes you look like a fanboy, right? No, you didn't know that? Oops. |

If I had an X-box, I would be in line at my computer store right now waiting to put my hands on Halo 2, but since I don't, Im going to wait for Half-Life 2
|
I pre-ordered both, Halo 2 so I could get it at midnight and HL2 so I could play CS:S. I'm sure both are going to be great games. In fact, I bet that Halo 2 will be Counter-Strike for the xbox what with the xbox live support and the huge stat tracker that Bungie has.
|
I have already ordered Halflife 2 Gold Package VIA Steam...Have been waiting for HL2 since i got my Radeon 9800 XT ...how many moons ago...sigh...Never been a FPS console gamer...main thing i ever played on console were sports games...So when Halo 2 comes out on PC i will most likely purchase it..
|
The focus of Halo and HL are completely different; one's an all out LAN party game and the other is an atmospheric adreline-pumping one-man experience. The HL line, however, has done much more for the FPS gaming community than Halo has. True, Halo has great multiplayer options and a badass vehicle system, but those have been done before (although maybe not as well) in Tribes and such. HL, and hopefully HL2, has made major changes in how FPS games are made and played today.
Im putting my money in HL2 |
Well, for all the opinions being flung about, nothing changes the fact that HALO rocks, and HALO 2 will rock once I get it. Mr. Deflock had already attested to this. Half-life was above-average in my opinion, way above, but still not a peer to HALO. ^^ My opinion may change drastically when Half-life 2 comes out, so we will simply have to wait and see.
|
Well I don't have an X-Box but I have to say that I enjoy Halo only for Red Vs. Blue. That is one helluva funny animachina! HL2 gets my vote.

I'm going to get HL2. As mentioned the potential for mods is excellent. So even if I don't like the game, which is unlikely, I can just wait for mods that appeal to me. Halo 2 looks neat and all, but I can wait for either a price drop or for it to port to PC.
Also, VtM:BL looks like it's going to kick massive ammount of ass. |
Mr.Deflok, I lack a PC that can run HL2 AND I lack an X-box, but I still hated Halo and loved Half Life. Not saying you are wrong about the fanboy thing though.

You really don't like the multiplayer Halo, YaWhateva?
That's what made the first one so special, it's fun as hell to play with a few buddies. |
I'm getting Half-Life 2 (only for CS: Source...I haven't even finished HL1 single player yet, I can't get past the marines, they keep bombing me out) and my roommate's getting Halo 2 so...best of both worlds, for half the price! Woohoo!
If you didn't like Halo multiplayer, you must not have played a 16 player game with 4 networked Xboxes and TVs. You're not gonna beat that with any other console FPS, though with only 4 players, I think Goldeneye 007 is still close disregarding graphics. (yeah yeah, perfect dark, well I liked Goldeneye better, plus it didn't crash all the time like PD) |
HL2
Heyya,
I liked halo ok, but halflife rocked. I expect them to be the same for halo2 and hl2, but I guess we will know soon! RANSOM |
The HL2 Beta played, felt and looked better then what i've seen of Halo2 (official retail) take that as you will. I too found Halo 1 boring as crap. can you compare PC games to Xbox games? :)
|
I had to go with both on this one. Although I'm only waiting for Half-Life 2, the only reason I'm not playing Halo 2 right now is lack of an X-Box.
I was playing another firstperson shooter. Killzone-- total crap. I compare it to Halo and find myself wanting more Halo. I'm looking forward to all the Mods Half-Life2 is going to have and I definitely wanna check out the new physics and gameplay. |
HL2 for me. Sorry, I didn't think Halo was anything to shout about. Upgraded graphics- check. Vehicles? Awesome. Story? Mediocre (could have done a lot more with it imo). Level design? So fucking terrible that it just about brought the entire game down for me. I assume Halo2 won't have this problem because they aren't rushing to release it like they did for the original... But I will probably just check it out at a friend's house.
Half-Life, while having lesser graphics, is still the superior game in every other aspect (minus vehicles). Original HL multiplayer blows compared to Halo, but the mods surpass. I'm not doubting Halo2 will be a good game, but I didn't think the first one deserved "omfg this is the best shit since hot lesbian sex" award. |

I think no game isn't rushed to release. :)

Also, the level design is the suck for Halo because of the platform. With a controller you can't have people focusing all over the world because of the PITA it is to see around. So you ended up with fairly linear levels a la Doom. They did a descent job at hiding it and you would probably never realize it. Supposedly they fixed it for the PC version, but that game was two years too late.
|
Easy one......... HL2. It has better controls, look better and the physics are amazing.
|
I already bought Halo 2, and will most likely get Half-Life 2. I think the two games cater to completely different types of gamers. I'm actually surprised that people make so many direct comparisons between PC and Console games. Some people just can't get used to playing games on their computers. They don't have the time, resources, energy or knowledge to install the game, make sure all of the hardware is compatible, upgrade hardware. I personally like the customization that PC games offer, but many people find it daunting. The gameplay of PC games also tends to be less accessible to the mainstream gamer (my opinion). When console games are hard by default, people complain (e.g., Ninja Gaiden on xbox).
Halo 2 is easy to play in the sense that all I have to do is load it in my xbox and that is appealing to many people. Xbox live is so easy to set up and on my connection Halo 2 is almost completely lag free. It's also very accessible to many types of gamers because it is ridiculously easy on the easy mode, but it is damn difficult on Legendary. Also, Xbox Live forces you to play with other people whose ability level is approximately that of your own, making online play fun for the newest player and the most experienced. Having said that, Half-Life 2 is gonna be awesome, but for different reasons, and I can't wait to get my hands on it. |

They both use the same physics engine as far as I am aware, all the same HL2 does look better, only a few more hours until I get to play!
|
HALF-LIFE 2! I am so happy right now! too bad I have a huge test in just over 2 hours. Oh well, after that I can play some more. The graphics blow Halo 2's graphics away. There is no comparison. And the gameplay, the GAMEPLAY!!!
