PC Rpgs on the way?

This last little while has been all about FPS style games.

Now, im not a HUGE fan of PC rpgs (dungeon crawlers) but i really do enjoy them, and they give a much needed break to all the cheesy RTS and poor FPS.

I liked NWN, Icewind Dale 1/2, Temple of Elemental Evil (basically all the D&D module style ones) and i really liked Arcanum, because of it's unique world.

Anyone know of any of these style RPGS coming up? I know the new Elder Scrolls is probably the new best RPG coming out, but i've never enjoyed first person RPGs. Sword fighting on First Person, no matter how advanced the engine has never been done very well.

Anyone? Thanks!

Have you played Wizardry 8 yet? Not exactly new but it is an incredibly good CRPG of the style you're describing. Also Baldur's Gate I/II would fit the bill.

I had mixed feelings about TOEE, loved the mechanics of the game and the combat simulation was the best implementation of 3rd edition d+d I've ever seen - but the game was so short, bug-riddled and lame in terms of RP and plot that I was dissapointed in it overall.

Haven't heard of any good new ones coming out, but if you've never tried Wiz 8 I would steer you there first - and if you need any help with it check out the ironworks gaming forums, alot of very helpful people are over there.

I'm not sure how far into the future you're looking, but there are two games that I can't wait for.

Neverwinter Nights II - 2006
Dungeons and Dragons Online - 2005

DnD online will be an MMORPG, but it looks like it fixed a lot of the problems associated with the everquest style of play. NWN2 is still in the early planning stages but looks to have quite a team behind it.

Tusko 10-25-2004 08:59 PM

yea, thats the same way i felt about TOEE

most of those style RPGS i enjoy immensely for the first 3/4 and then never finish.

and im not really a fan of MMORPGs, simply because i hate paying to play them online!

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines looks fucking awesome, and its based on Half-Life 2's Source engine.

NWN II - 2006? Jeez, that sucks! They were knocking out expansion packs every 6 months. Now we have to wait til 2006? I heard that they are working on Baldur's Gate 3. Is that true? I also know that Fallout 3 is being worked on. I'm not sure on the release date. Oh.. and don't forget Morrowind.

enderfax 10-25-2004 11:50 PM

...Morrowind's been out for years.

I believe Fallout 3 is cancelled. Black Isle went tits up and a lot of the devs went to Obsidian Software (NWN II, KOTOR II). Maybe they'll get the rights and start making it again, who knows. It was like 70-75% complete when cancelled though.

Dungeon Siege II is also out soon - 2005. DS was/is a good hack/slash rpg.

1 second the vote for Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - I downloaded a video walkthrough with voiceover - it looks quite cool.

When Interplay went down the shitter, Bethesda Softworks (Morrowind etc) bought the rights to it.... as can be seen in this Penny Arcade comic: http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2004-07-14

Ooooh, now that WOULD be good. Any one got any information on this?
Much appreciated

Hmm, definitely another vote for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and Dungeon Siege 2 when that comes out.

Have you tried Sacred? Its not horrible, the character development is kinda odd though. Theres a demo floating around somewhere, just not on the main site(http://eng.sacred-game.com/index.php) for some reason.

In all fairness the game was extremly faithful to the original module. Which was exactly what the design team intended.

I did however stop playing about halfway through the game. That could be because of the lack of true role-playing, which would not be missing in the pen and paper version.

It's not being made by bioware anyway. Bioware are working on Dragon Age instead. They seem to like passing sequels over to other companys, like they did with Kotor.

miggity99 10-27-2004 10:52 AM

Bioware is releasing 3 premium mods for NWN. It looks like they add about 5-8 hours of game play apiece. They're charging from $5-$8 for them, but they haven't released them yet.

LOTR:The Third Age is supposed to come out soon. Not sure what to expect with that one.

Vampire will not be as great as the hype(by alot) i cant say anymore bound by NDA till the game gets released.

thriolith 10-28-2004 09:35 AM

Hmm, when's KotoR 2 come out?

NDA? sorry just wondering what it means.

Hope it's good bought a presale at Best Buy and hate to waste my money.

It'll be my first RPG

Coppertop 10-28-2004 11:18 AM

NDA = non-disclosure agreement

Another older game (not too old, couple of years) is Planescape:Torment. You should be able to get it on ebay. I played it a few months ago and found it to be really awesome. It was voted rpg of the year by a lot of magazines/gamers when it came out. It's definitely worth checking out, imho.

I have a copy of the game CDs for Planescape:Torment if anyone is interested. Not a copy as in I copied it, these are the original CDs. PM me if so.

Frosstbyte 10-30-2004 12:18 AM

Planescape is pretty amazing. Arcanum drove me nuts and I stopped playing. Play both original Fallouts if you haven't. BG I/II, especially the second, stand as paragon's of greatness in the RPG universe. Fallout 3 is coming out, as is "System Shock 3" which, though technically I guess FPS style is structured much more like an RPG. I'm not too worried.

enderfax 10-30-2004 12:27 AM

Torment's an awesome game. I like it a lot better then BG/BGII.

That's because it's a breeze to crank out expansion packs for existing games compared to programming new ones.

Shit, for most expansions, what do you usually get? Few new playable chars, few new areas, few new monsters. Gameplay is usually pretty much the same.
