1 million subscribers!

I learned today that 1 million people bought diablo 2 the day it came out. The first damn day, I mean what about all the people that just couldn't get around to and bought it the second or third day. Wow.
Now World of Warcraft is coming out and I can only guess how many people are going to get that game. There is so much anticipation. I would expect way more than a million to get this game. Everquest only had 400,000 players at any one time. I think there could be 2 million people that get this game.

I bought it the first day it came out.

Ehhh, I'm prolly going to get shouted down by the majority here, but I really am not so impressed with WoW. Looks a lot like the same fantasy mmorpg content repackaged with Warcraft decals stuck all over it. Then again, I loved the first two Warcrafts, and was underwhelmed by the third so maybe that's why I'm not too excited about it.

If a million people buy WoW, there are going to be many people cancelling their subscription after one month.

Echodork 11-04-2004 08:13 AM

Diablo's online play was free. You wouldn't believe how many Diablo fanbois have posted "I AM QUITTING BLIZ SUX" posts over WoW's monthly fee. People bought D2 because at the time, there was no competition as far as online play... there just weren't any other games on the market that featured as large an online component as D2. Now, with WoW, you have a whole genre of MMORPG games.

WoW will sell well, but it won't break 2 million.

I agree... trolling sucks

2 million is a lot. I don't think that there will be that many sales for a MMORPG. Games like half life 2 will sell a lot more I would think.

i think wow will be succesfull, but i don't think so many people will buy it;diablo 2 had a free multiplayer mode, and to play wow you need a flatrate and adsl and you have th pay about 10$ an month...many people will think that's too much and won't buy it!

He probably thinks the servers will be overwhelmed - and that's a valid reason. It happened w/ Diablo 2. Remember, battle.net for D2 wasn't properly working until months later.

They most likely won't have that problem this time since they know this will be a MMORPG.

Ahh I'm so glad I played D2 from it's release date before dupes and hacks were available. Hoping to experience the same thing with WoW when strategies are all relatively new and such.

I don't think it will be breaking any sales records. The problem with MMO's is that it audience isn't as large as regular games. Mostly, because no matter what, some people will not want to pay a montly fee for a game. Also, there are people like me, who will wait a couple of months before buying it so the WoW team can work on server and bug issues that will arise after its release (all games have them.) Still I think it will have a huge initial release. Just not record breaking.

Sorry, forgot I posted that in this thread..but anyway.

I just think many people will be in shock about World of Warcraft. I'm not arguing it won't be a good game -- I'm buying it as soon as it comes out. But many people buying have not and will not enjoy the dynamics of an MMORPG. Couple that with a monthly fee, I think many people could be cancelling. By the way, by many, I don't mean half, but say it sold 1 million copies, I would expect probably about 50k-100k to drop out within the first two months.

It will be veyr interesting to see WoW's initial sales and their retention. With their influence in the South Korean gaming market, it could be very high. A lot of new people will be introduced into the genre.

I for one could NEVER understand why people liked Diablo2 so much.

It was fun to play through it once...after that? Why? And go online and do the same thing over and over? The cutscenes where GREAT, but thats about all IMO.

WoW is looking good from what I hear. Got a buncha buds playing the beta. I am trying to keep my distance from online RPGs but will prolly have to pick this up...just to give it a spin.

I've just been playing Diablo since the first was released and the music, scenery, and gameplay sort of became a part of me in a sence. Opening the game and signing on just felt right after a while and I was mad addicted to Diablo2. I don't play too many games in general and Diablo2 was really easy for me to get immersed in and enjoy the time I spent playing. I always hear how people complain that it's a 'click fest' and such. That never once came up in my mind and I would never have thought about it if other people didn't bring it up..

diergray 11-06-2004 04:36 PM

I placed my pre-order for WoW. As long as the nerfing doesn't get out of hand (like Galaxies or City of Heroes) I am looking forward to months of gameplay fun!
