Super Smash Bros. Melee
 

I know there are tons of places to talk Smash Bros. that have a lot more activity than Tilted Gaming. But the level of discussion here is so much better than you'll find on gamefaqs or smashboards... I thought I'd start a thread and see if it went anywhere.

I'm semi-addicted to the game. It's not really an obsession as much as a constant. Oftentimes I'll immediately lose interest after I beat a game but I've been playing at least a few rounds of Smash a week since I first played it.

Anyway...

I usually play w/Marth. Not too much razzle-dazzle but very effective if the timing is right. The most difficult player for me to counter would definitely be Link.

Do you find it hard to find players that are good competition? For me, it's difficult to improve against CPU opponents. I kind of get locked into a certain mode of play and it ends up hurting my skills against human competitors.

Just trying to spark a bit of discussion. I'm weary of all the l337 speak on the other boards. ;)

I also play with Marth, but I haven't played much lately. At school I'd get together with some friends once a week for a Smash Brothers night and we'd playing for a few hours, really good fun. The only thing I don't like about Marth is that my friends all complain about how I use a couple of moves haha. But if it's not broke, I'm not gonna fix it.

the problem with playing marth is that he has so much range it's difficult for a beginner player to counter him because they're often unskilled with items and projectile attacks to keep out of way of the sword.

another thing that ticks people off is that all the moves look the same, adding to the illusion of just using a few attacks.. the dude just swings his sword... so they all look similar no matter what buttons you are pressing. on the other hand, i do use the side smash attack a lot.

I love SSB:M, any time my friend s want to play we all go at it. Usualy on weekends, all 4 of us play for hours. A friend of mine only plays with link, and hes insanly good. I use Ness my self. It amazes my friends sometimes that i can PK Thunder my arse back to the area and hit them on entry :lol:. Some of his moves are limited, like i can't always use PK Flash, i have to be away from teh fighting, and hope they dont move white the big green flash of death is headed twards them.

I'm a Sheik man, myself. Pity my main gaming buddy goes Falco, he's a real bitch to Sheik =( Most of my foolish pals think she sucks, until I kill them. Lots.

Oh god if I could only tell how many hours my friends and myself have clocked on this game. I should check actually, I believe theres a timer in the game, however we've played on like 3 or 4 copies of the game.

Anyways I play as Link a lot, and Jiggly Puff too! :D I have a friend who plays with samus, and he is damn good. I have a feeling if he played in tournaments he could place in the top 5.

Is this game any fun with one player?

I don't have anyone around to play with now. :(

the game is a dang good game w/one player because there are so many things to unlock. it truly shines in multiplayer but i've logged quite a few hours getting trophies and all the other extras. you'll improve your multiplayer skills also, but not as quickly as you would w/other players. as other posters have said... it makes for a good party game. hopefully you'll find someone to get into it w/ya.

who do you all think is the all-round strongest or weakest character?

samus gets the strongest vote from me, pichu the weakest. i suck most with mewtwo and ness, but that's just because i suck.

Ness can be really good if you know how to use him. I personally like Ness, Dr. Mario, & Zelda. Playing with 3 other friends is usually how you get the most fun out of this game. As for strongest and weakest, I don't think there is either. It really depends on how well you can play that certain character. If you mean strongest attack wise, then I'd have to go with Donkey Kong or Bowser. Weakest would prolly be Jigglypuff or Pichu.

Awesome game. Lately my friends and I have been playing like this: you press 'a' off a character twice, which randomizes, and choose the one you want (you can only play a character once). After a little while at this we are good at most of the characters by now. My favorites include Pikachu, Falco, Bowser, Ness, Marth, and Mario, in my opinion these are some of the strongest, although it's easy to get lucky with about any character if you're "on". I've dominated games with Jiggly when my down-b attack is on :) Pikachu and Pichu are probably the easiest to get the hang of, all the swords players aren't too bad to get used to, either. Toughest to play well is definitely Ness. I can PK Thunder myself easy but I rarely rarely hit anybody :hmm:

hate to change the subject but a few nights ago friends and i were playing cruel melee and i was wondering everyone's record. mine is 5 with dk (down+b)

Bah, don't remind me of Multi-Man melee. Every time I tried 15-minute melee, I get it down to three, two, MOTHERFUCKING BOB-OMG DROPS RIGHT IN DK'S/MEWTWO'S ATTACK AND KILLS ME WITH ONE FUCKING SECOND LEFT.

Laughed the first time. Swore the second time. Threw my controller through the window the third (it's still ok, though)

Gotta love SSB:M. In terms of finding good human competitors, I find the most effective thing to do is to grow your own. Get a few friends who've never played before and teach them how to play. I had to do this with MarioKart64 when I first went off to college.

It can be tough teaching one person how to play, because you're so much better than them. But if you have three people who don't know how to play, they can usually got at each other with varying degrees of success while you kick back and take the occasion whack. Eventually, they'll get to be your equals and then it's crazy fun.

Oh, and my favorite player is Jiggly Puff. I pride myself on being able to beat people with the Puff. I always thought him/her/it was the most useless player; down+b put it to sleep after all! And that's what made it worthwhile. I was most disappointed when I learned that falling asleep is actually a powerful weapon. I will never use that power!

I also love picking people up with Donkey Kong and jumping off the screen, thus killing us both. The other person totally freaks out when that happens.

Seriously, though, as far as multiplayer gameplay goes, this is some of the best. When I want to do well, I play as Link or Young Link (depends my mood... sometimes I just need to be fast), but when I'm playing with other people I play as Ness much of the time, or DK others. They're just fun to kill others with.

One of my favorite parts about this game is that just about anyone can pick it up and enjoy himself. For example, my little sister and I had been playing for a while, and we invited my brother to play. He'd played SSB once or twice before, but never SSB:M. Then he came along, we set it to sudden death mode, he picked pink Captain Falco, and he kicked our asses.

It's been worked to death at Smashboards and GameFAQs, and they've pretty much concluded that Shiek/Marth top the list, and Pichu/Bowser are right at the bottom =) I tend to agree, none of my friends do, but they're all stupid =P Even so, the difference is not that huge given the number of characters. You just gotta be better than the other guy and nab all the good items =)

yeah, the "tiers" discussion on those boards are always going nonstop. i guess there are tiers (for those lucky enough not to spend time on the gamefaqs boards: tiers are general stratifications of each character's abilities) but i've seen some people go crazy-go-nuts with characters i really really suck with. oh well.

i disagree though, i think there is a radical difference in the play style of the different characters. certainly more than i've found in virtua fighter or tekken. it's tough to just randomly press buttons and win in ssb:m... i like that.

I always loved playing Samus. She's annoying as hell and I like to monopolize on that.

I love playing 4 player, its awesome! All the vcharacters are good, but Roy or Marth are my favorites.

I don't even own a modern gaming console, and I love Super Smash Brothers Melee. "If you don't play SSB:M, you can't be called a gamer" is probably not melodrama.

I love playing this game. Make sure your playing with other people or else it won't be fun. Link owns.

Me and my buddies play this game all the time. My trifecta of terror is Falco, Gannondorf, and for 4 man melee, Kirby

i lost my copy of the game, i'm so pissed it just like dissapeared, im gonna have to vbuy it again. I uusally played with kirby, or link. i can be so cheap with link throw him in the air and then do ur spinning fire sword when he's up there

I agree. Get your friends to come over and teach them to play. They'll want to beat you, so it will challenge them to improve quickly. Also, while they're learning use players that you do not use often, that way you'll also be improving your overall skills.

As for me, I like using Jigglypuff, Pikachu, Kirby, Samus, Ness, Captain Falcon and Zelda/Shiek. People just don't know the power of the Puff, plus I love whacking people with Ness' bat. I spent countless hours playing with my floormates, it was some of the best four-player action I've ever had. Long live SSB:M.

Ness is the man. Me and my friends spent countless hours on this game when it first came out (although our new obsessions are the Naruto games for Gamecube and PS2). Hell, we even dust off the N64 version sometimes. DK I think is the most annoying character to play against, especially if the one controlling him is cheesy. (That usually leads to real life blows :p ) This is an easy game (even my 6 year old nephew can regularly beat some of my friends) yet the amount of skill it takes for someone to use some of the characters balances this. Now only if they would ever bring the Naruto games out in English everyone could taste the 4player ninja goodness.

That's what I love about this game. Well, except from the inherent coolness of Sheik. The fact that it caters for all skill ranges, letting everyone have fun.
