Electronics Botique vs. Gamestop

Not wanting to get in trouble for "advertising", I will only state the facts of what happened to me at these two stores yesterday.

I had brought back to the mall 2 XBox game which I no longer play. These were Prisoner of War and Enter the Matrix. I went to EB first to sell them, they would give me 5$ store credit or 4$ cash for both. I wanted to use that money to reserve a game so I decided i'd try to sell them to Gamestop. At Gamestop the would give me 10$ store credit or 8$ in cash. You can guess which store I eventually sold them to.

Anyone have similar things happen?

Lasereth 07-24-2004 09:00 AM

I never trade in games because of the terrible feeling that you're getting $5 for a game that cost $50. I've found that EB usually has better customer support and better used game deals. There's not too many Gamestops around here, but I've never had any bad experiences with them!

I have the pleasure of having Media Play, Best Buy, GameStop, EB, and Toy R Us all within a 10 minute drive I never turn in old games just for the reason stated above, almost like you are getting ripped off. Besides that how many of us would love to go pull out the old NES and play some Tecmo Bowl sometimes :)

Destrox 07-24-2004 01:57 PM

Personally, I never ever trade in my old games simply because they RIP you off. Sell it on ebay and you'll get more off it.

Otherwise, I prefer EB over Gamestop/Mediaplay/BestBuy/CC/ToysRUs since they offer better selection, prices, and usally get new things faster.

Jam 07-24-2004 02:26 PM

yeah... NEVER sell stuff to these places... ebay is your friend

they sell the game you got 5 dollars for for like 20...

At WillowVideo a local second hand movie/game store (which also rents what they buy) I was there looking for NES stuff not too long ago, and some lady came in with a pile of movies (or dvds, I dont remeber) but she got 2 dollars each... and they were fairly new movies... I was going to try and buy the ones I wanted from her but feared being permantly kicked out of the store if I offered her 4 dollars as opposed to thier 2 (she was already talking to them)

so sad... so, just remeber rule one, ebay is your friend

These games I sold them were complete with cases and everything. I dont care also if they resell it for lots more money! They were taking up space in my closet and I would never play them again.

I seen a kid actually get kicked out of GS by me cause they offered another kid like $4 for an older Madden and the kid say MAN I will give you 10 for it.

I work at EB too and think the price we give is ridiculous. I trade online or with friends but only rarely, I keep nearly all my games, makes the collection look grander.

freedom of speech, though I guess since its on the stores private property you can do that, though that is crap, I mean shit.. the kid selling the game would leave your store too and sell it to the other kid for more, and have a negative view of your store, im not a big fan of the local eb, they lie and jerk you around

bouray 07-29-2004 07:50 PM

Well, here in La. all of the EB's i have been to were horrible. Bad customer service and prices on the older and used stuff seems a little higher than GameStop. (All new stuff is basically the same price everywhere).

flyboy 07-30-2004 12:51 AM

Damn how many people here work at EB? I work there too, and i also think the prices we give you for your games are a ripoff. But if you have games you don't want to play anymore, and don't want to take the risk of selling them on ebay, its not too bad when you think about it. (We usually trade $100 games for $25-30)

Jam 07-30-2004 04:44 AM

what risk is there to selling a game on ebay?

pixelbend 07-30-2004 05:19 AM

Hey, I say just keep 'em. A year later you can pick it up and play it like it was new.

Or maybe I just have weak long term memory.

Still love playing all my old Dreamcast games, glad I didn't sell Soul Calibur for $2 :)

hulk 07-30-2004 06:25 AM

It's not _too_ bad here, EB'll give you $25 for a decent in-demand game. So that's about a quarter off the price of a new game. Even shitty games will get $10-ish, so it's useful if nobody wants it or you can't be arsed waiting for someone to buy it.

Kadath 07-30-2004 06:27 AM

My favorite experience in EB was when I was buying my friend's PS2, and wanted to split the difference of EB's markup so we'd both get a better deal. I went in and asked "How much will you buy my used PS2 for?" He told me. Then I said "How much for a used PS2?" He looked at me and said "Get out."
Still, I'll go to EB for my games, since there are two at my mall.

Mr.Deflok 07-30-2004 12:07 PM

He told you to get out? That's a little rude! When people ask me things like that I play along with them.

Hey Church and Flyboy, do you guys have to do GamePro too?

Church 07-30-2004 07:19 PM

God, please don't remind me of the thing, lol.

Baldrick 07-31-2004 04:41 AM

I'd never trade my games for cash/credit. But every now and then EB does have some great "trade two games in for this game for free" type promotions. Then I'll dig up two games I HATE, to trade in for one I want. That's about the only time I'll use a service like that.

Flyguy 08-01-2004 10:07 AM

Agreed. I don't sell to any of those stores. Period. They always rip you off giving you 5 bucks for an game and turning around and selling it for quadruple the price.

EB's projected revenue growth rate is 22% over the year term, and they're projecting revenues of $670 Million for Quarter 4 due to the Christmas season. They're doing okay.

I take your point, however. A business exists to make money, not to be fair to its customers.

flyboy 08-02-2004 12:44 AM

Bloody gamepro. That crap is the worst thing i've ever seen. To the uninitiated, its a selling technique that the bigwigs think will help us sell the whole store to a customer. I've yet to see it

Jam 08-02-2004 02:13 AM

still, they could make a profit without ripping thier customers off so severly

edit** however I blame the customers for being stupid enough to sell them back so cheaply, supply and demand, less idjits selling them back for 5 bucks then theyd probably pay more per game (though theyd probably mark up the price to buy preplayed games too which is already ridiculousy high)

Get a mod chip, that way you can copy them before selling them.

I mean, after all, you still paid the $50 for the game and the game publisher isn't getting jack from sales of used games, so it's not really hurting anything.

zero2 08-02-2004 02:44 PM

I actually don't like either, when it comes to selling or trading in games. I've never been able to get very fair deals, despite what condition the game is in or even if the game is fairly new or popular.

I'm going to pretend I didn't read that.

Mkay, why? Do they get profit from sales of used games? If so, then I stand corrected, but the last I heard they didn't and that it was very similar to a used CD store.

The recording industry/artists don't get paid for the sales of used CDs, right?

Although, if you had a mod chip it'd be a somewhat pointless plan :D You'd sell your games for store credit.. but you already have a mod chip, so.. hm. Copy your games anyway and give them to a neighbor or someone who can use them instead of sellin em for $5 a pop I guess ;)

But if you sell a used game, then that potential buyer is lost to the developer/publisher, and the profit stops with you =P

Yeah, that's what I was thinkin. To me, that's even more wrong than a modchip ;) At least I don't resell the game I copy.

Technically you're buying a license for the game, not the game itself, correct? So you'd figure there'd be something against resale.

Ah well. It's all grey area. I don't mean to spark a debate about whether or not modding is good/bad.

cheeterbo 08-03-2004 01:22 PM

how about we set up an exchange of sorts, 1game for 1game. the only cost would be shipping. it would certainly take some trust, but since i don't think i will play some of these games again, i will be the first to offer any of these games up for trade:

xbox only

oddworld, any clancy title, madden 2002, halo, nemo, project gotham racing, doa volleyball, shrek, jurassic park

Ditto. They so blatantly rip people off it's not even funny.

When Metal Gear Solid 2 came out, it was $50. My cousin and I both bought a copy only to find it was f'n 7 hours long. He beat it in the first night he got it, played it a few more times, and by the end of the first week was ready to trade it in. EB/GameStop wouldn't give him more than $10 for it!!

It had NO scratches and was perfectly brand new, yet we looked over and saw other used copies of MGS2 all going for over $40.

The used game policies of these stores irritates me to no end, and coupled with the fact that a lot of games these days, IMO, aren't worth $50, made me get the chip.

If you wanna sell a used game, do it on ebay. As long as your game is in good shape, has the case, instruction manual, and everything else that came with it, there's absolutely no reason for you to get below 75% of it's retail value because, let's face it, you could re-shrink wrap the thing and there would be absolutely no difference between that and a brand new copy aside from the mental comfort of "ah, this is brand new and no one else has touched this"

There's an existing system like that set up at Game Trading Zone. I set up a membership with them back when I was looking for the Disgaea Player's Guide, and although I've only done four trades, it's a good system. You can also list your collection, whether to keep people from offering you games you already own or for bragging rights. My page: http://gametz.com/?S=11801264&user=RedCometChar

On the subject at hand, I recently brought my one-day old copy of Mega Man Anniversary Collection for GC in to a Gamestop since I found the controls unintuitive. They offered me $12 for a $30 game, and I came home and sold it on eBay for a $1 loss. Definitely the way to go, although I do still enjoy shopping at those chains for used stuff myself.
