SpiderMan 2

Well, now that this game is released on consoles, what are your thoughts? I've yet to play, but from what I've seen and read it looks rather awesome. I'm picking it up as soon as I can.

Xiangsu 06-29-2004 09:34 AM

I don't think I will buy it, rental if anything.

the_marq 06-29-2004 11:25 AM

The demo for PC was complete garbage. I think we had a thread about this maybe 3 weeks ago.

That was about Superhero games and the Spiderman game on PC is not the same one on consoles, it's a hack version for 5 year olds. The console one is supposed to be very good, gonna give it a shot later today at work.

pixelbend 06-29-2004 12:26 PM

From what I have heard, it is getting really good reviews. It is supposed to be a fully open NYC that you can just websling around in, sort of like GTA with webshooters.

Thanks for clarifying MrD I look fwd to your review.

sadistikdreams 06-29-2004 02:08 PM

I just bought it... But my pop has my Xbox...
I won't be able to play it till tomorrow.

The first Spiderman movie game was TOP NOTCH, though!

twister002 06-29-2004 05:33 PM

The way I've heard it described by people that have played it is: "Grand Theft Auto with SpiderMan". Meaning it's as open ended as GTA, not that Spidey has to swing around shakin' down hos.

Czernobog 06-29-2004 05:53 PM

I just bought it today for PS2, and let me just say this: I spent literally over 3 HOURS just webbing around beating thugs up and roaming. The webslinging definitely puts you in mind of the movies, with all sorts of insane, over-the-top moments that just make you think: "hey...this kicks some ass". The combat can be a little iffy, mostly devolving into button mashing. But if you can master some of the more intracate combos and moves it's very rewarding. The only reason I stopped playing was because I didn't want to go too far into the storyline untill I saw the movie. But I definitely recommend it to any Spider-Man fans, and maybe everyone else too. :D .

bltzkriegmcanon 06-29-2004 06:44 PM

That sounds very, very nice. An excellent usage of the license and great spin on the GTA-based engine.

hulk 06-29-2004 07:08 PM

Just FYI, Gamespot has a review up. They're usually pretty spot-on.

Church 06-29-2004 08:41 PM

I was playing it for about an hour at work today on xbox, (having all 3 systems, xbox, ps2, and gamecube beside eachother makes it easier to compare). And I must say, the xbox version is much better.

With that said, the game fuckin rules. Web slinging around, power jumping, all of it is pure awsomeness. I'll definitely be picking it up when I get some money.

Mr.Deflok 06-29-2004 10:24 PM

Looks like there's a few of us here who get paid to play games :) I had a go on the Xbox version and loved it! Granted I only played for a few minutes it felt really good and more importantly, very deep. Might pick it up and give it a proper go this weekend.

hulk 06-30-2004 05:06 AM

I hate you both. Just saw the movie, and I'm pumped for this game! Just have to wait until July 2 and $100, though =(

Church 06-30-2004 11:02 AM

Working at EB pays off once in a while. ;) lol

sadistikdreams 06-30-2004 07:43 PM

Okay, just played it for a few hours...

The web-slingin' control takes a little getting used to.

But this game is, as some of you would say, "t3h r0xx0rs!".

Did you have the webslinging on automatic or manual?

Fremen 06-30-2004 08:42 PM

All I have is a GameCube right now.

Has anyone played this on GameCube?
Would you reccomend buying it for the Cube?

t3m3st 06-30-2004 09:14 PM

I've got it for PS2. The absolutely loved the last Spider-man movie game, and this one puts it to shame. Anyone fight Mysterio yet? "You have no chance to survive make you time." Best villain evar!!

I would. That's my system, too =) The game is pretty much identical across the systems, other than minor graphics changes to optimise it. A very well done piece of programming, indeed.

Well its pretty much the same for GC and XB, but I'm sorry to say this, it looks like shit on PS2 IMHO. I dunno, I don't dig the trails. I think it looks best on xbox.

And t3m3st, I only have so much time to play it at work, but I'm at Rhino right now. Took me a while to figure out what to do with him. ;)

hulk 07-01-2004 04:33 AM

Apparantly, Aussie gamers didn't get screwed over for once. $68 for the GC Spiderman, $99 for the PS2 and X-Box =)

hulk 07-01-2004 07:28 AM

i've just read in an interview that the developers were concentrating on just the swinging and web engine, and having the entire of Manhatten at the player's disposal. Everything else was just "gravy" added in until the movie release. Now that they've got the meat down pat, the third movie game is gonna O W N.

NoSoup 07-01-2004 07:29 AM

Just got it last night -

I agree that it takes a bit of practice to get used to the web swinging, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be slingin like a pro.

With the exception that the non-plot missions are a bit repetative, this is an awesome, awesome game. I think it is more like True Crime than GTA, but same difference, I guess.

Is it just me, or does anyone else get some sick satisfaction of swan-diving off the empire state building and eating cement?

The city is huge.... incredibly huge. There isn't a whole lot that could make it better, IMHO, except adding in the power to slingshot yourself at things (a la movie)

hulk 07-01-2004 08:27 AM

Uhm, guess what dude, they did =) It's a purchaseable power, so you can go nuts =D I think the main gripe with reviewers are the horrendous NPC models, but I can overlook that. Man, I need a few bucks to get this =(

Well, I haven't gotten too far in the game yet, but...

There is something that reads like it should slingshot you, but in reality you just get a better jump from it. Perhaps I just don't know how to utilize it, but whenever you hit the web swing button you automatically go into the air... I was thinking more along the lines of launching yourself from the ground...

Yeah, you can. Its a purchasable power like hulk said.

Excellent :D

Nikilidstrom 07-01-2004 06:01 PM

While I admit the console version is the bomb, isnt anyone besides me just a little pissed that we PC gamers are getting screwed yet again? Christ, this isnt even a shitty port of the console game. Its a piece of shit that you would find for free inside of a box of Fruity Pebbles. The original spiderman movie game kicked ass on th PC, especially for the 20 bucks I payed for it. What the hell went wrong?

Yeah, where did you buy it? We're supposed to tell all customers that its a completely different game for PC where I work (EB).

But on a side note, they simply put less work into the PC port. PC games aren't selling for as much as they used to, so the game reflects the price. Why would they put the same amount of time into a game that sells for 1/2 the price of a console port?

sadistikdreams 07-01-2004 11:36 PM

Oh my fucking christ.

I just finished the first battle with Mysterio.
And guess what!
Spoiler: Mysterio quotes CATS! Right before he disappears, he says "You have no chance to survive make your time!".

I'm sorry, I just got really excited about this!

hulk 07-02-2004 05:09 AM

Hehe, as Gamestop put it, Welcome to Four Years Ago =)

Kadath 07-02-2004 06:30 AM

I am enjoying it so much I got home a little after midnight and stayed up for 2 hours playing it and only got through one chapter because I just wander around having fun. My only gripe so far is that the sinking boat side mission is way too difficult. I landed on the boat twice and bounced right off -- Spider-Man can STICK TO WALLS! Anyway, it's very, very good. I got it for the PS2 just because my collection of PS2 games is much slimmer than my GC stack. Church, are you using the component video cable for the PS2? It looks pretty good using that.

Church 07-02-2004 06:59 AM

Yeah, its got nothing to do with the cables, its the programming. I'm just saying, compared to xbox and gamecube, the ps2 one is ugly.

eggy182 07-04-2004 05:32 PM

Swinging around the city is wonderful, but it's too easy to get lost. And the actual missions are kinda tedious and not all that fun.

Destrox 07-04-2004 06:51 PM

Think i'll pick this up for my PS2 if I can find it used.

hulk 07-05-2004 12:59 AM

Just picked it up and DAMN it's good fun =) Just spent about four hours cruising around doing the odd mission, the swinging engine is just so awesome.

eggy, you do have a map and pointers on all the time, so finding your way isn't too difficult =P

bookerV 07-05-2004 05:43 AM

Well I attempted to play this. I went out and bought it for my Xbox. Popped it in, started to play. Was having a blast. Just got done the first mission when it froze. No biggy, so I restarted it. Bam froze again on the title screen. Ok getting annoyed. So I restarted it again but this time my Xbox wont turn on and I just get a flashing red/green circle...
I call the Xbox number. My 90 day warranty expired 13 days ago... So they won't help me at all unless I want to shell out $180 CAD (shipping, postage, repair fee) to have this thing fixed. Well suffice it to say I am mighty pissed. I couldn't even get a refund on my now useless game. All I could get was stupid store credit that I had to fight for.
So I am now not touching this game at all... And I no longer have an Xbox. I can't justify buying another one or spending that kind of money to get mine fixed. What a crappy crappy turn of events...

On a side note, the game was good for the 15 minutes I got to play it...

hulk 07-05-2004 09:28 AM

Ouch, man. That's pretty fucking painful.

Church 07-05-2004 11:30 AM

Yeah, sorry to hear that.

On another note, I actually picked up my copy today and I'm loving it.

I'm kind of stuck though, does anyone know how to get to the statue of liberty by swinging on those UFO's? Is there some trick to it because I keep falling.

sadistikdreams 07-05-2004 12:55 PM

Chruch, put the swinging on normal.
1)Swing on to one UFO, and charge your jump.
2)Right before your arc starts to push you backwards, jump.
3)When you are at your highest, put out a web.
Repeat steps 1-3 as needed.

Kadath 07-05-2004 02:24 PM

Apparently you can grab a helicopter halfway out, then switch to another copter when the first one starts to turn back. I know what you mean though, Church. That took me quite a while. Only the Doc Ock missions were more frustrating.

Church 07-05-2004 06:57 PM

Ok, I actually got it, finally. And I'm sure it was just me, but when I was destroying the orbs on the holographic projector, I actually felt like I was up high. And since I'm a little afraid of heights, it really added to the experience. I LOVE this game!!

hulk 07-05-2004 10:17 PM

Haha, that mission was rather awesome. I only fell once from the UFO's, but I'd spent hours swinging so I was pretty pro =P

Kadath 07-06-2004 05:28 AM

My least favorite aspect of the game is Spoiler: When you have to bust up the arms sale, and afterward all the supervillian gang members in the city are those damn robosuits, which are kind of tough to kill, especially if there are three.
Whenever I respond to civilian distress now and it turns out the be that I groan. It's worse than the damn sinking boat.

hulk 07-06-2004 07:06 AM

Hehe, I've managed to take on most of the battlesuits pretty easily now. Just finished the story portion of the game and I'm sorta blown away. The last battle was pretty hardcore =) And now, onto earning thousands upon thousands of points!

NoSoup 07-06-2004 09:38 AM

Yep, I beat the story as well... with less than 49% of the game finished. Must... Earn... More... Hero Points....

Church 07-06-2004 09:52 AM

Damn, I'm on the Doc Oc mission where you have to shut down his reactor and save MJ, and I'm glad that Xbox has tearaway cables because this mission is pissing me the fuck off! lol

Kadath 07-06-2004 10:30 AM

Yes, Church, that mission was a bitch and a half. My only tip would be to the do the station under the floor last, and when fighting Ock just stick the the standard "web up all his tentacles, punch him a few times and jump away as he wriggles free" strategy. I am about halfway through the massive hero point reqs for chapter 16 -- I'd be further if my game hadn't frozen as I was being given a civilian mission, leaving me to reload and re-earn all the hero points since my last save.

Church 07-06-2004 12:46 PM

Ok, I beat the story mode as well. Took me one day, but that's only 50% of the game! haha, I love it.

Kadath 07-06-2004 04:22 PM

I wish there was a way that hint markers would look different once you'd gotten them. As is, I have no idea how I'm going to get them all, unless I sweep the city block by block.

Church 07-06-2004 05:02 PM

Yeah, true. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, but I may just get them as I see them, and if I've already gotten it, then so be it.

And I'm not sure if you know, but you can choose which things show up in your map legend. For instance, you can make it just hint markers, so you can see how many are around you. Hope that helps some.

Kadath 07-06-2004 07:03 PM

Yeah, I found that out, but it still doesn't tell me if I've been to it, and I tend to find myself on the Upper East Side a lot (maybe because my best friend lived there until a few weeks ago) and getting the same tips.

Uhm, the outer rim of the hint marker changes to yellow once you read it.

Church 07-07-2004 05:07 AM

Man, I didn't even notice that, lol.

twister002 07-07-2004 05:45 AM

The thing I love about this game is how accurately they modeled the island. I've swung around for hours finding places I've been or places I've heard about. "Look there's where the hotel I stayed at is.". "Look there's Ground Zero.". Even if they don't have the names of places on the buildings (I noticed that the Carnegie deli is labeled as a "food cafe" or something) at least they are in the right places and the buildings are correct. I wish you could swing out to Queens and the Bronx. I'm going out to NYC next week and I think I'll be able to find my way around even better after playing this game. ;)

That's because it's a different game, my friend. Come, let us forget that horrendous experiment ever occured.

Fremen 07-08-2004 04:44 AM

Hot damn! I bought it yesterday. It's farkin' fantastic. :D
I get lost so easily, though. So far, I've let two people drop to their deaths and couldn't get two others to the hospital in time. Oops! :p

GregsterGT 07-08-2004 06:02 PM

Much better game than I was expecting.

Keedo 07-10-2004 06:11 PM

inzaneferret 07-11-2004 05:05 AM

is'nt the pc supposed to be the more mature platform?

hulk 07-11-2004 07:08 AM

Woah, look at the join dates on those rookies. How odd...

*Ahem*
1) Yes, the game roxxors your boxxors.
2) Go play it, NOW! No, don't look, go NOW AND PLAY IT!
3) The PC version is complete and utter ass. The PC platform is most definately not more mature. Just more geeks play on PC's. Generally. Hypothetically.

Kadath 07-11-2004 06:46 PM

Oy. Finished the first day of the rest of your life tonight. I've got inside 20 hint markers to go, and I'm making decent progress on hideouts and skyscrapers, but bouys and secret are going to be impossible, and I haven't done more than a handful of the challenges to say nothing of the mega challenges. Definitely replayability-a-go-go!

Fremen 07-12-2004 08:01 PM

Could some kind person help me out with a hint on how to shoot the orbs on Liberty Island?
I tried sticking to the side of the central structure and blasting the orbs on the arms that way, but it doesn't seem to work.
I can't seem to swing and aim to shoot a web blast with any accuracy at all, either.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Church 07-12-2004 08:12 PM

You don't actually shoot them, you have to punch them. Swing clock-wise with the structure, and keep your web lines short. And also, you just have to kind of get near them, then start punching. Your character will automatically start hitting the orbs if you're in the area.

Fremen 07-12-2004 08:20 PM

Thank you, Church. I'll give it a go. :)

Edit:
Worked lke a charm, Church! Thanks.
I finished that part and the part at his apartment, (which, btw, reminded me of the scene in Conan the Destroyer with the sorcerer), now I'm shuttin' it down for the night. *whew!* ;)
Thanks again, bud.

Fremen 07-16-2004 05:05 PM

Has anyone seen any birds, rats or trash?
Small details I would've liked to've seen.

Name some of yours.

Church 07-16-2004 05:41 PM

That would take WAY more work. I'm glad they didn't do it though, because if hey did, it would have been like GTA:VC, and all those flyers just annoyed me, and the birds were just moving backgrounds which you could never get close to. They would have had to have made a whole new AI platform for it.

Cool idea though, just a little ahead of our time. :)

sadistikdreams 07-16-2004 06:34 PM

Oh man. How the fuck to you web Doc Ock's tentacles? That SUUUUUUUURE could help me out.
/has been trying to beat the last Doc Ock level for the past week

Church 07-16-2004 08:08 PM

Ok, it takes some practice, but its easy once you get it down pat.

I found its best to basically press your dodge and web button at the same time when you see your spider-sense go off, because spidey will just dodge and immediately shoot the restraining webs.

Hope that helps you.

sadistikdreams 07-16-2004 08:24 PM

Okay, so XBOX would be B & Y?

THANKS Church!!!

Church 07-16-2004 08:29 PM

Yep yep. np. :)

Xiangsu 07-16-2004 08:41 PM

I rented the game and all I'm really thinking now is that I should have bought it. There are so many things to love about the game and I will highlight a few:

*Its awesome swinging around the city and getting to be spider-man.

*The city is huge, just like the real thing, and all there are so many famous places to see. For example The Stature of LIberty, Twin Towers spot lights, etc

*Some of the missions are cool, most do get a little repetitive though.

*Combat is pretty cool once you get some of the better moves, however earlier on if your not careful you will get killed a lot.

Bottom line: Its awesome, so far. I do think it would get old after awhile, but as of right now I would give it an 8.5/10

teethman 07-16-2004 08:48 PM

yeah this is a really cool game. its the best spiderman game yet in my opinion. its so fun just swinging around on buildings and stuff.

It's not possible to fight Doc Ock before shutting down his reactor, is it?
I've tried hitting him and webbing him and it doesn't seem to work.

No, he has a protective shield. You have to shut down the reactor first, he then says that his shield is down and you go kick his ass. Make sure to use the spidey sense so you don't get hit, because he will mess you up with those tentacles.

Anyone beat all the pizza missions? They are extremely hard.

Fremen 07-18-2004 02:47 PM

Thanks, Xiangsu. I finally got the shield down, now I'm trying to web Docs' tentacles, which I can't seem to do...

Church 07-18-2004 07:38 PM

Its the same as I posted earlier for someone else, spidey sense dodge and web attack at the same time. Its a little repetitive, but it works. :)

There's an idea for the next one... Imagine swinging around building to building and having to swing through a group of birds flying. you could hurt yourself or glide along or something. or possibly web them to the ground...

Spider-Man is so evil in my hands. Gotta love popping those balloons... I WISH this did come out for pc, so someone could have made a mod where Spider-Man can beat up anyone in the city and piledrive civilians off tall buildings

Church, I think he means the good version on the computer.. not the crappy one we see today. ;)

Woot woot!! I finally beat that tentacled motherplucker! YES!
He kicked my ass too many times to count, too. :D
I couldn't even web-up his tentacles, either. I had to keep up a hit and run strategy and slowly wear him down.
It worked best if I charge-jumped while sprinting at him then punched him over and over while using spider-reflexes.

I also was finally able to find and save one the civilians that hang from the buildings.
Almost rescued the last person on a sinking boat before the time ran out, too. (poor dude)

Now, here's my problem(s).
I can hear the little girl whining for her balloon, but as yet I haven't seen her or the balloon.
Any help or advice?
Annnd, is there a place to wait and catch a chopper to Liberty Island or another way to get there?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you, gents, for your earlier help, I really appreciated it.

This is only my third game that I've been able to beat and I'm pretty happy. :)

Fremen: for the balloon thing, it's a purple marker, like a purse snatching or road rage. The marker is the balloon itself, and you have to be quick or it will get too high to catch. Once you have it the marker will change to the child. Oh, and don't try to web it -- pops the balloon.
I don't know about a copter to Liberty, but if you hang out on that side of Manhattan and listen for the sound you might get lucky. After all, you've got those 50K hero points to accumulate. :)

Thanks, Kadath. I was finally able to hop a chopper from a building catty-corner to the island.

I think I spotted the marker thing floating up but it was too far off. I'll try again later.

Thanks once again. :)

The easiest way to get ballons is to lock on to them once you're close, then just hold forward and swing around until you get it. Works 99% of the time for me =)

I rode a helicopter about halfway across the water, Dashed on the line for a bust of swinging speed and jumped off... I landed in the water, but I was far enough to wash up on the island near liberty island. I then waited for another helicopter on that island to get to the statue of liberty. I then climbed/jumped my way to to top of the torch where Spidey now stands with arms crossed. :D

That sunrise is a beauty :)
