Starcraft VS Super Smash Brothers Melee ("Best. Game. Ever." contest)

Today is the championship match of the 128-Bit Division, where two total underdogs are facing each other. Halo/LoZ: Wind Waker VS GTA: Vice City/Final Fantasy 10 looked to be the most likely final of this division, but leave it to Starcraft and Super Smash Brothers Melee to bust that up into thousands of pieces.

Personally, if this was three years ago, I'd vote for Starcraft. However, my tastes and style has changed, and I still play SSBM some, so my vote has to go to SSBM.

I can't stand fighting games, so I'll vote for Starcraft. I enjoyed Starcraft, but I still think it's incredibly overrated. By what I've played of SSBM, I can say that Starcraft is easily better from my point of view. I understand that fighting game fans will probably vote SSBM...if you love fighting games, I hear that it's a classic!

Meh...I don't care much for TRADITIONAL fighting games, although I've had fun with them in the past. Tekken 3, Tekken Tag, and Mortal Kombat 2 come to mind of the traditional ones I enjoyed (though Tekken Tag ain't that tradional...but still, I think I'm getting my point across). Super Smash Brothers simply is nothing like those; I don't know what kind of fighting game I'd call it, but it's certainly not traditional. If it was a tradional one, I don't think many people would have cared for the series to begin with.

The Melee for me. Starcraft is great and all, but I likes me some four player rampage.

I voted for I split, mainly because there wasn't a "neither" option. To consider either of these games in the "Best game ever" class is ridiculous.

I voted for SSBM on GameFAQs because then I'm sure FFVII will blow it out of the water :lol:

Absolutely. I personally like SSBM more than Starcraft, but this is just sick. For once, I'm actually voting opposite my sentiment, just because I don't think that SSBM is THE best game of all time. It's just not.

starcraft here, although i preferred warcraft 2...

its mainly the preference of RTS over melee fighting. not a big fan of the melee, but RTS rocks my world.

ok.... I voted for SSBM because I don't think it stands a chance against FFVII. Of course, I also didn't seriously think it stood a chance against Starcraft. This is rediculous. It better be because of lots of people like me working to ensure FFVII's victory. If that many people really do prefer SSBM over Starcraft then the world is a sick sick place.

I love how these morons over at GameFAQs continually pair up games that have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Halo vs. Starcraft [FPS vs. RTS] was bad enough, and now they're pitting an RTS vs. a Fighting Game? Fucking idiotic, if you ask me...

I agree with ya to a point, but I want to state something from a personal standpoint. Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing are probably my two favorite racing games, ever. The only competition they would have in a bracket of just racing games would be themselves, if I had to decide the winner. Now, with that said, I'd rank Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, Super Mario World, Starcraft, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Perfect Dark, Megaman 2, and many other games higher...notice that none of those other games I mentioned are racing games. It's not so much that I dislike racing games as the fact that there are games that are very noticably better to me IN MY OPINION. Different genre or not, Diddy Kong Racing, a game I used to love, wouldn't ever get my vote against Halo.

I think GameFAQs tried to be more fair in the match-ups by putting the games in their proper era (except I'd argue Starcraft should be in the 32-64 Division and not the 128...but it's made for alot of excitement there, so hell, I'm glad it's there), because many of the older games wouldn't stand a shot against the newer games; it's the same arguement of when sleeper games that fewer people have played go up against the more popular games that generally got the hype most games didn't. At GameFAQs, well, it's obviously a FAQ-site for games, and many more people need the help and answers to newer games like Super Smash Brother Melee than the older classics like Contra, thus likely having much more of a fanbase. This isn't always the case, but it often-times is.

Yeah, it'd be nice if games could be put in their proper genre, say, in next year's contest...but that'd allow for only four genres (unless you split the 16-seeded brackets into 8-seeded ones, or add more games and brackets but make the contest last forever), so which four would you allow? I think GameFAQs did the best it could, so I support its decision to split it by era and mash all the genres into all the brackets.

Still is, too, but it's slowly losing its lead...and Starcraft has been the fuckin' Comeback King, so don't count it out yet. I've learned something from this contest...never underestimate B.net, heh.

I'm sure this is to the upset of many of you, but Starcraft couldn't make the comeback; SSBM won by around 500 votes.

as much as i like melee, i think the first smash bros had better/more hectic gameplay. although props to the second hyrule castle for being hugeass and fun.

I was hoping for Starcraft to make it to the Final Four..but I guess it will settle for the Elite Eight. At least we left our mark because Gamefaqs is mostly a console oriented site.

We were pretty close... just around 300 votes or so.
