Exclusive games to PSX and PS2
Hey everyone, just a bit of curiousity brewing here. I've never had a PSX or PS2, but I've owned many other consoles, and been a pretty avid gamer in my life.
My question is, what are the games that made (and are still making) these consoles as big as they are? I'm not asking to be smug, I really want to know because I'm considering getting one (probably a PS2, so I can play both PSX and PS2, but we'll see how cheap I can get just a PS1 for first). I'm up for just about any genre really, just any games that really made these systems worth owning for you all. Preferably, exclusive titles though, but if you loved it, I'd love to hear about it. |
final fucking fantasy
final fantasy 7 is the biggest reason so many people originally bought their psx way back in the day, and loyalty to the franchise has brought people foward to the ps2, with ffx, x2, and xi. As long as sony and square eidos remain in bed together for the big releases (i don't see crystal chronicles as a massive release, but i could be wrong), the playstation will continue to be a dominator. i'd also suggest the tekken series and the grand turismo series as other sony-specific franchises that have driven the ps console market upward. as far as your purchase desicion, just pay the extra cash and buy the ps2. buying a new (or even a used) ps1 at this point would be like going out and buying a '89 ford escort when you could get the '03 explorer for a thousand dollars more. sure, the escort will still get you around, and sure, you'll be paying more for gas with the explorer (metaphor: games for the ps2 are a bit more expensive), but in the long run, the explorer is just a nicer ride. The ps2 is a dvd player, a console, and if you treat it right, a spectacular lover. pay the extra money and get the current generation console. |
RPGs in general.
There are tons of RPGs on the 2 Playstations while there are only a handful amongst the Nintendo and X-Box. |
As said before FF series, including Final Fantasy Tactics. Oh Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Star Ocean 2, and many others i can probably think of later but i gotta go i am late to work.
|
Metal Gear Series, i know they've realeased Substance on XBox and Twin Snakes on Game Cube, but it always brings me pleasure to have things first :) they way they were meant to come out, no ports thank you.

With the price now, it's not a big drop to pick one up. There are a ton of great games for the system, just look at the list Las provided. You can get a lot of those games dirt cheap at EB these days also. It'll pay off in the end for ya!
|
Note also that the next GTA will be a PS2 exclusive for a notable period of time.
|
ps1 games that I think are worth playing still include:
Final Fantasy 7 Castlevania:SotN Harvest Moon Poy Poy Suikoden Metal Gear Solid Oddworld Final Fantasy Tactics Return Fire Resident Evil 2 and probably a lot more that aren't springing to mind redily. |
GTA's. Always released first on either the PS1 or PS2

Thanks for the lists and the input guys. One of the big draws for me are the Final Fantasy games. I've never played one [hides], but do like RPGs. I think the fact that there are so many RPGs on sony's side, and hardly any on xbox (which I own), a PS2 is in my future.
Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. One thing though, as far as playing PSX games on a PS2, is it just put them in and go? Or is there an adapter or something special I need to do? Just checking, as I've never really played with a PS2 much. |

Mr.Deflok, thanks.
I think I may (try) to hold off until the fall before I buy one, but I might just end up picking one up the next time I'm out :) |

I'm suprised that no one has listed Front Mission 3 for the PSX. That game's battle system and plot that were on-par with FFT, if not beating it.
