What's gonna be hot in 2004?

Alright guys, I know this sounds like a pretty generic thread, or maybe a blanket thread that's just gonna be either shut down or ignored and dropped to the deeper parts of the gaming section, but I really want to know what you guys think will be the hot shit for gaming this year.

Any platform will do, I just want some opinions for what everybody is getting hyped for.

Mephex 02-20-2004 09:59 AM

I must say I'm pretty excited about Söldner, Operation Flashpoint was one of my all time favorites, as well as BF1942, it looks like it could make a great combination.

Speaking of BF1942, I'm also anxious to play Battlefield Vietnam. Once again, I really enjoy the original BF1942, and to have them refine the gameplay, add choppers of their own, and other new content, I'm all for it.

Longer down the list is of course Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. But I'm not holding my breath :)

mr sticky 02-20-2004 10:19 AM

On the Xbox:

While I do agree Ninja Gaiden will be awesome, it's not exactly the return of platforming goodness. Two of the best platformers "of all time" (stated by many publications) were released last year.

I do however think Ninja Gaiden is gonna rock

Wyodiver33 02-20-2004 07:07 PM

UT 2004, love the demo

ironchefkorea 02-20-2004 07:10 PM

We'd be lucky if Doom III, Half- Life 2 and Halo 2 make the 2004 deadline. I'm thinking Q2 or Q3 200...9?

Mr.Deflok 02-20-2004 10:46 PM

UT2004
Doom 3
Half-Life 2

bltzkriegmcanon 02-21-2004 07:22 AM

great responses, guys. Looks like we've all got something to be excited about this year.

I wanna add MGS:TTS and MGS3: Snakeeater to the list, just because they look to be really awesome.

tokaok 02-22-2004 02:50 AM

World of warcraft will react havoc amongst the masses.

its looking to be a true genre breaking title and achieve what the sims online and
swg wear meant to do, bringing in the casual player to monthly paid subscription based gaming model of mmorpgs.

awww tokaok you're getting me all excited

Buk 02-23-2004 10:24 AM

All of the games above plus:

Starcraft: Ghost (GCN, PS2, XBOX)
Mechassault 2 (XBOX) Should rival Halo 2 as the premiere Xbox 3rd generation Live game.

I can finally see the light for PC games again, after a couple of really terrible years on PC we are finally going to have a good reason to upgrade our systems other than to play the lastest FPS.

Infernal 02-23-2004 12:20 PM

MGS 3 hope they don't do the raiden thing again

FF12, GT4, Halo 2, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Residet Evil 4. :D

jujueye 02-23-2004 12:26 PM

I still don't think Doom3 will get released any time near the Half Life 2 release. They know there will be too much competition, so I think they'll push it back so that they're the only game (so to speak) in town. (which means we may never see the game....crap!)

Haha, yeah I was kidding, BUT John Romero just hooked up with Midway to produce "Higher quality games for next generation hardware."

He also just got engaged to a Russian mail-order bride who's 40 (exaggeration) years younger than him.

sinjien 02-27-2004 03:41 PM

The only games that matter are the sequels to the ones that have mattered in the past.
EX:
Half-Life 2
Halo2
UT 2004
Ninja Gaiden
Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow
GT 4
This is the only exception for me this year - FABLE. Believe it. Anyone with an XBOX must pick this game up. All of you who are still holding off and relying on your PS2 trust me. This is going to be a huge game.

Hot off the presses from ign.com

Quote:

March 01, 2004 - Ending all the constant speculation about the next installment of the Grand Theft Auto series, publisher Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is indeed coming out. In the press release unveiled this morning, it was revealed that GTA: San Andreas will be an exclusive title for the PlayStation 2 and will be released on October 19, 2004.

In the past few months, the latest Grand Theft Auto has continuously been rumored as Grand Theft Auto: Sin City, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Grand Theft Auto: Next Episode. To make things even more confusing, Rockstar Games registered those names for internet sites in addition to other titles like Grand Theft Auto: Bogota and Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo. Unless these are potential future cities for the franchise, these names were most likely done to create red herrings for the press and fans of the series.

In the original Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas was a city that was based on San Francisco. Sections of the city in the game had names that were variations of the names of different Bay Area neighborhoods. With the hilly nature of the city by the bay, gamers might be seeing some more terrain than previous installments.

With over 11.5 million copies of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and over 10.5 million copies of Grand Theft Auto 3 being sold worldwide, there's a lot of pressure to make the next installment live up to the name. Leslie Benzies, President of developer Rockstar North, acknowledged this by stating, "We are extremely humbled by the success of the Grand Theft Auto series and it has made us push ourselves further than ever to create a title in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that will hopefully redefine the Grand Theft Auto series and revolutionize open-ended gameplay and video game production values.

Ain't that some shit. Better add that to the list then.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

bltzkriegmcanon 04-27-2004 11:50 AM

BUMP

mr sticky 04-28-2004 05:20 AM

You know I'm going to have to add Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal to the list. It's supposed to be as big as Going Commando and the original combined. I give GC five big stars.

bltzkriegmcanon 06-06-2004 10:23 AM

Time to bump this thread again, this time I'll say that Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is gonna be hot shit.

Mr.Deflok 06-06-2004 01:06 PM

Definately, Metroid Prime is my all time favourite game ever, beating out Sonic and Knuckles is a hard achievement.

Also...
SPLINTER CELL 3
PRINCE OF PERSIA 2
MYST 4: REVELATION
Fuck, Ubi-Soft is looking hot right now.

Stompy 06-06-2004 01:42 PM

Easy: GTA San Andreas and Metroid Prime 2.

GTA:SA is gonna be HUGE. Each of the areas in San Andreas are as big as Vice City.

I'd say FF12, but that's not till next year.

bltzkriegmcanon 06-24-2004 06:39 PM

Time to bring this thread back to the top, but don't fret, I wouldn't bump this thread unless there was some good news to come along with it. Your friends at Team Ninja have decided to pass along a little bit more goodness through Xbox Live! in the form of Ninja Gaiden 1.1. Read up and get knowledgable here at http://xbox.ign.com/articles/525/525886p1.html.

is going to be insane. It will own my life come October.

IT'S DONE!!!!!!!

Yes, this is the official word that DOOM 3 has been code released and has been approved for manufacturing!
It won't be long now until the anticipation ends and the PH34R begins ;-) We literally just hung up with
Activision and have confirmed that our latest release candidate has been mutually approved and is finally
GOLD. Thanks to everyone for their patience (yeah right! =) and for everyone at id, Activision and our
numerous partners for helping us create what I believe is absolutely the best game we have ever made.

So, the next question is release dates. Retailers in the States will be allowed to pick up games starting
at 12:01 AM on August 3rd. The official street date is actually August 5th in the U.S.A., but some of
your favorite stores will probably have it early for those of you who have to have it first. Check with
your local retailer for that information.

Internationally, the game will take a few more days to make it to the store shelves. The UK will probably get it first, on or about August 6th. Everywhere else will probably be Friday, August 13th (que Twilight Zone Theme) or close to that date, with just a few exceptions (e.g. Russia and Poland). This isn't
because we don't have love for you folks outside the U.S., but the localization and manufacturing process
takes a bit longer outside the U.S. where we will have JVC run 24/7 to get the units built. I guess the
European manufacturers prefer to give their employees nights and weekends off. Go figure!

The champagne is flowing here at id and smiles abound!

I'll update again with some DOOM 3 preparation tips (not what hardware to buy - you'll have to wait for
a programmer for that sort of thing). In the meantime, I want to see those "DOOM 3 GOLD!!!" threads set
new records for swamping message board servers, destroying productivity, and post counts ;-)

Recapping today's headlines....DOOM 3 GOLD!!!

bltzkriegmcanon 07-15-2004 07:11 AM

*Apologizes for double post*

I normally wouldn't do this, but since this is some pretty big news, I'm gonna post it anways, and NOT start a new thread or 20 (ahem, Doom 3).

Quote:

Microsoft announced today some special recongition for the brighter, more elite set of gamers savvy enough to pre-order a copy of Fable. If done so at participating retailers (including faves GameStop and EBGames), the lucky gamer in question will also receive a bonus DVD full of Fable-icious materials.

The DVD includes an extensive "Making Of" documentary featuring interviews with famed designer Peter Molyneux, as well as Simon Carter and Ian Lovett. You'll also get playable demos of Sudeki, RalliSport Challenge 2 and Top Spin, as well as trailers for Forza Motorsport, Jade Empire, Conker: Live and Reloaded and MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf. Pretty snazzy.

As a tasty bonus bit, Microsoft has also confirmed a September 14 release for the ambitious RPG. Very sweet.
September 14? Sounds good to me. If you wanna see it from the source, here's the link.

bltzkriegmcanon 07-15-2004 12:01 PM

*Apologizes for triple post*
From IGN:

Quote:

In a new update to his .plan file today (it's a geek thing), id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead commented on an issue nearly as high on PC gamer's minds as DOOM 3's retail status: the status of the DOOM 3 demo. The good news? There will be one. What remains to be clarified is when:

"Demo: our priority was finishing the game first and now we are turning our attention to the demo. I don't have any information to share regarding any specific content, but I don't believe that we have ever disappointed in that regard in the past. We will release the demo as soon as it's done, but this probably won't happen until after the game has arrived on U.S. store shelves."

Normally this would be disheartening, but given that the game's August 3 release is mere weeks away, we figure most of you will be working with the full retail version as it is. Could be worse, huh?
Ah, so it's coming out after the game comes out, big deal. Most likely, I'll probably be playing the game already.

The article can be found here.

bltzkriegmcanon 07-20-2004 06:30 AM

Ok, now that I've quintiple-posted, I'm pretty sure that no one's really interested in this thread, but in any case I'm gonna say this. I was browsing through IGN earlier this morning, and I had to say it, November is gonna be one busy fucking month. Outside of what's happening on GC (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes) and XBOX (Halo 2), here's what's going for PS2. This is incredible.
  • 11/01 - ATV Offroad Fury
  • 11/01 - Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2
  • 11/02 - Call Of Duty Finest Hour
  • 11/02 - The Lord Of The Rings: The Third Age
  • 11/09 - Ratchet And Clank: Up Your Arsenal
  • 11/09 - Spyro: A Hero's Tail
  • 11/15 - Goldeneye 2: Rogue Agent
  • 11/15 - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
  • 11/16 - Gran Turismo 4
  • 11/16 - Prince of Persia 2
  • 11/17 - Need For Speed Underground 2
  • 11/23 - Jak 2
  • 11/23 - Midnight Club 3: DUB Foundation
I know there are far more games coming out for GC and XBOX in that month too, but damn, that's a lot of good fucking franchises splashing down in a short period of time.

After calculating the cost of all these must-haves, it's gonna be at least $695.50 with tax. DAMN!!! And that's just PS2!
Now for XBOX:
  • 11/01 - Call of Duty: Finest Hour
  • 11/02 - The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age
  • 11/02 - Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2
  • 11/08 - Halo 2
  • 11/08 - Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 2
  • 11/09 - Halo 2: Limited Collector's Edition
  • 11/09 - Spyro: A Hero's Tail
  • 11/15 - GoldenEye: Rogue Agent
  • 11/16 - Forza Motorsport
  • 11/16 - Need for Speed Underground 2
  • 11/16 - Prince of Persia 2
  • 11/23 - Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition
Aaagggh! $642 for Xbox!!!
GC:
  • 11/02 - Call of Duty: Finest Hour
  • 11/02 - The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age
  • 11/02 - Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2
  • 11/09 - Spyro: A Hero's Tail
  • 11/15 - GoldenEye: Rogue Agent
  • 11/15 - Metroid Prime 2 Echoes
  • 11/16 - Baten Kaitos
  • 11/16 - Prince of Persia 2
  • 11/16 - Resident Evil 4
  • 11/17 - Need for Speed Underground 2
  • 11/29 - Star Fox 2
Well, what a relief, only $588 for the GC route. Damn, what a collection. If you get all the console exclusives plus the ones that aren't exclusives, you still end up with 18 damn games!!! Holy bejesus! That's $963, all for the best and brightest the consoles have to offer us!!! Granted, you might not buy all these games, you may just buy one, maybe even just one from one console, but shit, you cant' say that the big guns aren't being whipped out this year!

Grand Theft Auto:SA...its gonna rock!

twilightfoix 09-30-2004 11:14 PM

good for '04 hmm? where should i begin?

Top four most anticipated hands down are:
1. Fable
2. Halo 2
3. GTA: San Andreas
4. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (at least it's looking for an '04 launch but '04 is coming to an end soon and it still has no release date)

The good games of '04 that have already been released:
1. Star Wars: KOTOR
2. Tales of Symphonia
3. Ninja Gaiden
4. Burnout 3 (apparently was really good though i've never played, but gamespot gave it one of the highest ratings i've seen them give yet, 9.5/10)

Sleepers would have to be:
1. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
2. Star Wars Battlefront (Is actually an enjoyable game)
3. Viewtiful Joe 2 (liked the 1st one, hope the second one meets the expectations)
4. DBZ Budokai 3 (will come out hopwfully before the end of the year)
5. Pikmin 2 was a good one
6. Need for Speed: Underground

Technically it came out in '03 but Soul Calibur II is still, hands down, the best fighting game outPERIOD

Eight 10-01-2004 04:46 AM

My view on top PC games 04 :)

Call of Duty (and add on)
Joint Ops
Dawn of War
Farcry
Doom3
Star wars KOTOR
Halflife 2 (when it out :) ).
