XBOX Live and College Dorms don't mix (Now with Solution)
Live will not connect in the dorms due to the lame firewall. My XBOX gives the message XBOX Live is not responding. Has anyone else had this problem or found away to fix it? Any help would be great thanks!

I have heard that if you call your Network Admin they can open a port up for you to use. Unless the admin happens to be an Xbox gamer you may have to explain to no end what this is for. I have heard of this happening in Xbox forums and in the end said student found out his admin was a gamer..

Our network guy knows of the problem and is a big XBOX gamer. Sadly, they keep the udp port 88 closed because of hackers. I have no clue what any of it means. Any ideas?

yeah, my school is the same way about that. Their policy is to not allow any ports to be accessed without the student bringing it on themselves first. No unsolicited traffic, if you get my drift. Oh well, it keeps the spam out for the most part. But it sucks that we can't do anything with xbox live, hell, we can't even get people to join any lan games for BF1942 because of the policy.

Just curious but what schools are these, im deciding where I will go now and want a decent policy to be in place there.

XBox Live and the PS2 online feature aren't working here yet, but I have heard that the tech guys are working on attempting to open a port that will work for both. Ha ha, that's never gonna happen, but they are supposedly doing it. -Lasereth |
hehe, all i can do is chuckle.
as a person wo lived in teh dorms for 5+ years.. we all know what goes on in the resnet network (i also worked for the resnet admins for 2+ years) sure, it sucks that you cant play games and use AIM.. but it also keeps (or at least attempts to) out hackers, and saves the students from themselves legally.. file sharing, bandwidth clogging, illegal activities, etc.. If you want a better connection..move off campus.. because on the resnet.. you arent OWED jack shit. it's a privilege to have..and even when you are forced to pay with room and board, you have to play by their rules because you are leasing a line.. you dont own anything. Welcome to life kids. |
Yea..we have that stupid ass firewall shit too at SRU. At least we can play LAN games..well some. We can't fucking play from room to room, its fucking ridiculous if you ask me.

At the local university, there's a mandatory "internet" fee (I forget what it's officially called) for dormers. Nothing (or almost nothing) is blocked though. I know some kids there who run dumps, game servers, p2p servers and what not. Lucky kids I guess.

Well if ur in the U of Wisc:madison, heh ur in luck, we play 2/3 xbox halo tournaments just through the ethernet connect to the network. the xboxes in the other rooms can detect them. This is probablly true in other universities too. check my other thread to see if ur college works.
|
We can system link with halo, sadly that's all we can do. It is still fun, but not the same as XBOX Live. I also tried to suspend my account with XBOX Live, and got in a fight with some rude lady. Live called me back in response to problems with her. So hopefully I made an impression to change the way somethings work around there.

Some of the guys in the residence hall are having a Halo tourney this weekend over LAN, it promises to be extremely cool, I hope I get to take part in it.

Today I tried getting COX High Speed Internet installed in my room. That idea didn't pan out so well. San Diego State has an exclusive contract with the shitty provider we have now, and there's no way I can better Internet Service. So I am screwed and out of ideas. I guess I will just play LAN games for the next 4 months.

God works in mysterious ways, My internet at school has been working on and off for the past 3 weeks, and today it completely shut off. My roommate had a virus and they closed the port as punishment for the next 2 weeks. And since I have 3 online classes I was fucked. My neighbor however had a wireless hub and so I bought an XBOX wireless connector so I could system link and connect it to my pc. In some wierd twisted way I had XBOX Live. I don't know if it's like the free porn (friends) but it was better than nothing. If you are having the same problem (not being able to connect to XBOX Live) I was, you might want to try this.

Port forwarding... is... wonderful.
