Your most amazing online game moment?

I just had an OMFG! moment that inspired me to make this thread :)

I was sniping in call of duty 4 (this all happened within a few seconds, on moving targets) and shot the enemy. So far normal. It didn't kill him which set me up for the coolest moment ever. I followed him in my cross hairs setting up my kill shot, when I noticed a head bobbing at the bottom of my scope coming in the other direction. I pause for a split second, calculating trajectories, etc.

I decide to ignore him, but then he JUMPS up and aligns perfectly with my original target. I quickly aim and fire: the bullet kills him in mid air, then continues through him, and kills the guy 20 yards behind him! Everyone involved was like holy shit! NICE SHOT!

I've sniped people in mid air before (rarely though) but never killed 2 with a non-explosive round, much less when one of them was in mid air. Was so awesomesauce.

Now lets hear yours!

Ultima Online, 1999(ish): Lord British himself spoke to me in-game at the official Blessing of Pax Lair City :P

(some of you will know what I'm talking about)

Shauk 02-10-2010 12:12 PM

Watching lord british get pwned during the beta was pretty cool.

I'd have to say as far as MMO's go, my cool moment was getting hand of ragnaros.

I won a weekly Warcraft 2 LAN Tourney back in the day for a few months straight at a LAN center I used to hang out at, I felt like the king of the video gaming populace, This kid used to watch me play every week, then once he got to know how I played, entered against me and beat my ass. it was a rivalry from then on out, we'd trade wins week after week, we were pretty much equals at it :D

Yes I said warcraft 2 and LAN, I'm an old fart.

Basically my strat was to establish town halls all over the unclaimed mines with a couple towers to defend against scounts
do the tech tree up until I could make Knights, build 3 sets of barracks in 3x3 formation (27 unit production facilities)

then just click, hit the knight hotkey, 27 times, send all of them at the enemy

repeat.

it's just swarm after swarm of heavy calvary.

it worked so well because most people were turtles and the knights could move fast, take out most ground units with ease, and 27 of them against the average tower configuration meant that even if the 1st wave died, the towers would be a mess by the time the next wave hit.

that and most people only built like 1 or 2 barracks, I stopped doing that cuz I realized I was making gold faster than I could spend it.

he countered me by building squads of infantry/archers and just trying to pre-empt my town hall expansion efforts by setting up barricades outside of my bases. then he'd get siege weaponry to take out my towers and just move in his wimpy little guys to harrass my peons before my knights could get in to play.

Rome: Total War. I'm playing the Egyptians and I have a massive army (Full 20 stack over 2000 royal spearmen, armored archers, light/heavy horsemen and my best general) that is currently advancing into Roman lands. At the ending marching day I think there is no single army that could take me down. I was right, so the Romans throw 3 FULL armies with generals at me in ONE battle. My 2000 experienced, battle harden men, verses over 7000 Romans (light horse, swordsmen, light bowmen, and generals). Because I was being attacked, I could pull back and setup my men and wait.

I had long spearmen that could setup in a phalanx formation. So I made a "ring" of men in phalanx formation, protecting my archers. I set myself at the highest point of the map I happen to be fighting on and set my archers to fire on sight. My general stayed inside the ring and my horsemen stayed outside to deal with their archers/horse. Two armies set upon me at once with the 3rd on it's way. I destroyed the first army with arrows and attacking his flanks (no real horse in the first army). They ran away as the second army attacked and the 3rd army walked on to the battle field. I started to lose men to constant charges and the generals throwing me unto my spears. I had two sets of spearmen in the middle that would rush into gaps, preventing the horsemen from attacking the backs of my men.

Wave after wave of Romans died on my spears, I was kept busy filling gaps in the line, reforming troops and running my tired horsemen all over the place. When the last general fell under the swords of my horsemen, the 3rd army broke and ran for the hills. For 1 1/2 hours I fought this battle SCREAMING at my computer, "HOLD THE LINE, HOLD THE LINE!"

It was a glorious moment that allowed me to take town after roman town with no resistance.

I did lose over half my army, but I was able to recruit more mercenary troops to fill the gaps.

Mine was a loss, but what a spectacular game!

2002? ish. 8 player Age of Kings on an archipelago map (biggish islands and with small rivers in between). The action was fast and furious with the opposition having one guy almost completely taken out quite quickly. My team was in what we thought was a dominant position, when the strongest team member on the other team starts to build Wonder. In Age of Kings a Wonder victory is achieved if it is built and stands for 200 years (game time).

An epic battle is fought trying to take down the six castles he has clustered around his wonder, with the (almost) dead guy coming in at the last minute after spending the entire game hiding in a corner, rebuilding, to help defend the wonder. We had almost destroyed it when the time was up :(

Footmen and archers? Clearly, he had no concept of what he was doing. The correct move would have been to tech mages for your expansions. Kudos on using humans over orcs, though. Ogres were far overpowered in that game, and it was rare to see any humans win.

Shauk 02-10-2010 09:02 PM

yeah well if he let me actually set up those expansions and spent that much time tech'ing up to mages, I would already be pumping out knights and putting him on the defensive, mages weren't particularly cheap.

ironpham 02-10-2010 10:49 PM

...I could have mages up with blizzard in a total of 7 minutes gametime...and well placed blizzards destroy pretty much anything. The point is, anything is better than archers. Most useless unit in the game. Replacing all of the archers with footmen would've fared better, though not by much.

Oh, and on topic, my moment was beating the #1 b.net ladder player back in season 1. ut@golfers was his name I believe. He was gooooooooood.

I was playing COD4, in the Bog when someone signed in and started playing. I didn't pay any attention at first, till he crossed my sights and his username was "Lasereth." I quickly typed, "Lasereth? TFP Lasereth?" Whereupon he replied, "yeah, who's this?" I said, "Lucifer!"

okay, so it's not much, but I thought it was totally cool to run across another tfp while in-game!

ObieX 02-11-2010 02:31 AM

Everything i do in online gaming is amazing, its so hard to pick out a single instance that outshines the others.

DON'T STEAL MY THUNDER!!!

Ha ha ha the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title was when I got Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros in WoW. I was the 2nd person on my server to get it and when I got it I only had 6 or so epics and a bunch of blues. I had to use social engineering and some really creative auction house techniques to make that weapon happen, but when it did, it was one of the happiest days of my entire life, literally. I had people begging me, asking to PAY me to be able to play my warrior in a PVP fight after I got that weapon. People would duel me just to see how fast they'd die. One guy made a night elf warrior just because of how awesome my warrior looked after I got that hammer.

Rofl I remember that. I played the hell out of COD4.

Speaking of, most amazing moments in games? I will now plug my gaming videos which I made for this same reason: to capture amazing gaming moments forever.

I'd also like to add killing Ragnaros, Vaelastrasz, Nefarian, and the Twin Emperors in WoW to the list. Such huge epic battles that I played a part in.

Great thread, I'll add more as I remember them.

Killing a Cyberdemon in Doom 2... ... one pistol shot at a time. Me and a friend managed to accidentally lure the Cyberdemon to our spawn point which he was shelling with a nonstop barrage of missiles. At most you could get one pistol shot off as you spawned before you insta-died. The rest of the time you either died before getting a shot off or you were fragged by the other person spawning on top of you. I think it took us a few hours to finally wear him down.

I've gone through some pretty intense online versus matches in Left4Dead and Left4Dead2 in the last two years. More recently, I was part of a random scavenge match, and my team got all 16 canisters for all 5 rounds. The other team did well too, but it was incredible to get it every time. Such a LONG match though.

Mantus 02-13-2010 10:38 AM

So many great RTS memories! Like my first multi base simultaneous Hydra Drop in SC. Or in AoK when I was always the guy holding off 2-4 opponents while my allies boomed. I still remember screaming at my buddies "all four are in my base, I'm going down, it's over!" AoK was some hardcore shit. We worked for hours on our strategies only to see them fail or tear our opponents apart with relentless precision.

CS will always have a sweet spot in my heart. I sucked compared to most but there were always those nights when I single-handily facerolled the other team - followed promptly by accusations of aimbot and a boot :D

Isn't that ridiculous? I still get booted sometimes when I'm on fire because of crap like that.

Being so intune with the game engine of AQ2 after 6 years of playing it that when you were on fire you would know you were in the only space there wasn't bullets.

A key example was on Murder, 4 guys m4ing me, two above and in front, one above and to the side and a guy behind me on my level, no bullets hit, I felt my mind working out everything, everything includes who all four of the people were and how they played, I felt like a GOD.

Neo ain't got nothing on me in AQ2 in my prime, damn I miss you AQ.

Being the first one of my crew to get an Ultra Kill in DotA (with Pudge, no less) when they introduced quadra kill and ultra kill.
Beating mages on damage on waves in Mount Hyjal as a shadow priest.
Getting an MC raid going(Vanilla) that consisted solely of drunk people.... and getting all the way to Domo.

Shauk 02-20-2010 12:26 PM

People raided MC sober? ;p

Esoteric 02-21-2010 09:09 AM

The most recent that comes to mind is killing 3 people with one M24 round in the Bad Company 2 demo.

It's not all me, but I think I have the best ones in there.

intellijence 03-24-2010 08:06 AM

I had an epic SC1 game the other night. 2v2v2v2 The Hunters. Typical beginning, rushes and the elimination of 3 opponents in the opening 10 mins. Next 10 mins 2 more die, including my teammate. One team left vs me (2v1).

I was sandwiched between their two main bases. Protoss to my left, Zerg to my right. I was Terran and held them off for about 30 minutes using tanks/goliaths and most importantly, science vessels. Having about 15 sci vessels saved my ass in that game. Constant EMP shockwaves when masses of carriers were coming in and Irradiating the flocks of mutalisks and guardians was necessary. Eventually my expansion is what saved me. I built 5 command centers with nuke silos. Took ghosts and nuked their expansions as well as a decent portion of burrowed Zerg units. More ghosts for lockdown on carriers/arbiters and I slowly won a battle on two fronts.

It was epic when it finished and I felt it was noteworthy since I hadn't played the game in years

Counterstrike - Killing every member of the opposing 10 man team with my trusty TMP and knife. I was just goofing off and had changed my name to TMPMasta as a joke. The last 3 died within about 5 seconds of each other and I had run out of ammo on the 2nd one. Had to finish him off and kill the last one with my knife. I got lucky a couple of times but it was still cool as hell.

World of Warcraft - When foror's dropped. I started yelling over vent to my buddies who weren't in the 5-man to see it happen. An hour later a buddy had got me into an Onyxia run and I had Quel'Serrar.

I know it's not that epic, but I've only been gaming online a few days...

I've been playing Team Deathmatch on Modern Warfare 2 and had a few cool moments, but the one that stands out was when I turned a corner to the right and started up an incline, going after a red dot on the radar.
There was an embankment that I could just barely see a guy's head moving parallel by, so I moved toward it, meaning to shoot him with my pistol, when all of a sudden what looked like a scene from an action movie happened.

While I was moving toward the guy, he started turning toward me, and I was focused in on him, when all of a sudden, some other guy jumps over the lip of the embankment (like he had a trampoline) straight at me and shot me dead quicker than a rattler strike.

It looked cool as hell. I swear I saw it in slow motion when he shot me with the shotgun.
When I viewed the kill-cam, it wasn't as impressive looking from his point of view.
It just looked like him running off the embankment, not jumping.
Still pretty awesome in my experience.

Reminds me of Wolverine jumping toward the camera in the X-men cartoons/books.
