Why do i suck so much at.... (game genre)

Why, personally, do I suck so much at FPS games? I've played, in the past Unreal Tourney(all of them) and the Deltaforce series. Yet, I suck at halo. It's this whole Fps thing I guess.

Though playing wow for 5 years dosen't help i guess.

I started out wow as fps. Lol then on day a bud says.. "dude wtf are you doing? Didn't you see the pat coming up on your six?"

*sighs* then found out scroll mouse wheel out. A whole new world opened up for me. In pvp, on wow at least, i sucked till this.

ENTER 3rd person view. Now I could see everything. (well except damn stealth noobs, which i confess i play 2 of them)

Is it because I'm too used to seeing everything around me?

We bought a xbox elite (woohoo) and got a used copy of Halo 3 to goof around with. For me at least it was to play on Tuesday downtime from wow. And to play with my oldest son.

So, we play though campaign. I set us both up with 3 month live gold accounts. Enter the games.

We spent a day pouring over local host on the maps. I told me son, "we are doing this to lean the layouts. Choke points. Places to form up... etc" then off we went into a game.

small team squads of 5 each. Team slayer. In 15 games I got no kills. Smoked a whole pack of smokes. Put perm imprints on the bottom of the xbox controler (i kid) and spent more time dead than alive... *at one point i got kicked for betrayal with this flame thrower device, I had no idea it could wipe us all heh*

my son remained quiet the whole time racking up 36+ kills. Even went outta his way to splatter 4 enemies that had me pinned down. (my god he's good) and never mentioned I sucked.

(then i realized this kid of mine has been playing halo for months at his friends house when he goes over there)

Is it because I can't scroll out? That I cant see around me?

I watched a sandtrap video after a 16 man slayer. I watched in horror as 8-15 easy kills walked below me. I turned to look behind me.(I get paranoid in fps games) and they happend to walk right under me and i never saw them. Most just right past my LOS. I realized then all I have going for me is my limited field of view and hearing. Most the time, I get killed due to the fact I don't see someone.

Pointly, the 10 - 2 view spread. Most the time, they are at my 9 or 3 spot and bah. Am i so used to wows 3rd person view its ruined me to all FPS? or is it just this halo game?

No granted this controller im still getting used to. Its the aiming. When the pucker factor hits. I just cant get the *nudge* effect down to hit something. Wild clip spam ftw i guess.

Now, you give me a damn sniper type weapon. I'll kill you everytime. I mean you have no chance outside of creeping up on my back arcs and i cant see that. On a vallhala map, I got 36 head shots in that game. On the next map, I couldnt find a sniper gun, so I got only 4 kills and thats only cuz i had that crystal fireing gun that locks on someone. On team BR's i got that secondary gun 3 shot burst with scope. I can snipe but soon as it hits them they duck and cover till shields regen. AND they know where i am then lol.

My son, he says i just gotta keep playing till i get better. (then i have a nightmare of my old english teacher. She said, "you just have to keep writing till you get better.")

Do I have any hope of improvement? I hope so.

Even though I suck, I still enjoy halo multiplayer.

btw don't let me get the grav hammer. I went on a 22 killing spree with it. Got 3 people in a jeep thing, killed a guy in the flying machine. then caught 5 people stacked in a bunker area... etc.

Ended up, getting hunted by all of them the rest of the game. Though my team cheered my suckage at shooting, due to the fact i pissed off the red team so much, the blue time had easy kills the rest of the game. cuz the red team pretty much ignored them the rest of the match to find and kill me.

hell even my son screamed out in voice. Watch out my dad has the grav hammer.

On campaign mode, heh i see a brute with that hammer, i ignore everything else and donkeypunch to that hammer. Then my son hangs back to snipe while laughing at my antics.

He tells me its cuz i play a pally tank.. I run around get the mobs to follow me in a big group then wtfpwn hammer time. I think he's right.

Is this for real? Or some blogger post you ripped? Its funny.

But in Halo your best bet is to charge with suppressing fire/evasion until you get close enough for a melee kill. Its why you pwn with the hammer. Never stand still, and left-right your scope when you move. It helps to counter the lack of 360-degree vision. Also learn to use your radar to see if anyone is sneaking up behind you, and espciailly when you're in an area with levels (Above or below you).

no thats all me friend.

yeah im still learning the radar.. sad part is.. by the time i see the red blip its too late.

I'm getting used to moving my scope. On the 3 shot burst though its a pain. Usually the player jumps on me. Thus my 2nd burst hits the chest. I need to sit down with my son on say sand trap have him sit stationary and pop him in different ways with that 3 shot burst scope gun, and see how fast his shields do down.

My problem with the charge and burst is... thats two ways. Same is happening to me as well. I get there and I always lose to the melee hit. That or they run past me. I'm left with a split second decision of where the hell did they go. I've learned to somewhat jump and spin. Thus removing me from the melee hit finish to my ass. But, man its rough learning this all over after 5 years lol.

With the melee kill, you need to adjust your timing for the lag (if you have any), i.e. hit shortly before you actually appear to be in range of the elbow. Once you get a few kills, you'll know the range/speed by instinct.

I seldom play with the battle rifle (the burst-fire scope gun). My weapon of preference is the standard rifle and that laser sword.

Also learn to use grenades. The sticky/spiked ones are the best, especially when they are charging you.

Look, Halo multiplayer is not easy. I find Unreal Tournament to be a much better fit to my style of play, but Halo is fun. Sandtrap is also a difficult map, because you die to snipers (who have played this game for yonks). Rather play the shipped maps like snowbound, or that one with the jeeps on the beach.

You will eventually get used to the radar. I just make sure to pay attention to my peripheral vision where I keep the radar and when there's a red dot, I'll focus in on it. Honestly, most of your fights will be within radar range, so it is extremely important.

As for the BR (3 shot burst battle rifle), keep your scope at head level always and let the auto-aim take over when you get close enough to their head. It'll pin you on it as long as you can keep your cross-hair moving in the same direction as the opponent. It takes about 3 bursts to kill someone. You know the cross-hair is on the head when there's a little dot in the middle of it.

Also, don't be afraid to use your grenades. A well placed frag grenade is usually the difference between winning and losing a battle.

Rts games.

I was pretty good at the first one I played. Dune2. Prob 15 yrs ago. But they have passed me by since then. Now there are like 7 different resources you need to acquire, so I end up with 6 guys standing around an empty mine for 10min. Building upgrades, unit upgrades, special abilities. Bleh. By the time the tutorial is done, so am I.

rts games im torn two ways... either build fast cheap and zerg their base.. or build small but tough defense and bunker in. Ive even when as far as building walls and emplacements all around resource nods in rts games i play.

tutorials are annoying but i force myself into them. It comes down to .. do you want those extra troops now or upgrade a building for the next two min.

my all time rts game was total annihilation. but i lost heat when people would build a air pad kid nap my commander and once they got going fly him over the heart of my base and watch in horror as he exploded taking out all my creating.

ok ive sorta noticed this auto aim thing... but i cant figure it out.. is it cuz i correct it and not know whats going on? when my cross hairs start to move with the target do i let go of the right stick and let it work for me?

I don't suck at any video games, sorry.

Zeraph 02-09-2010 11:39 AM

With the FPS genre its all about map awareness. Knowing where your enemies most likely are, knowing the best positions to be in, knowing where all the guns and ammo are (if applicable.)

One time I was playing counterstrike and I was against this guy I could swear was cheating (was possible) because he was waltzing around and blowing everyone away in less than a second with headshot after headshot. So I watched him in view mode for a few minutes. He wasn't cheating, he just had excellent map awareness.

Every corner he turned around his reticle was already exactly where the enemy's head would be if they popped out from behind a crate, a corner, etc. His timing and movements were fluid and perfect. His reflexes were fast but it was 90% map awareness because his reticle was already in the right place, so all he needed to do was click to fire when he saw someone's head.

You know SWAT? You ever seen them train? That's practically what they're doing too, "map" awareness. They all cover a certain point and move their guns fluidly to areas they know they'll most likely encounter hostiles.

fighting games. sucked since Street Fighter III.

Xerxys 02-09-2010 01:10 PM

I should probably use anonymous posting for this one. I suck at sports games. I just have never gotten in to sports, virtual or otherwise.

I'm an expert at fighting though!

I wouldn't let go of the stick. The auto-aim will slowly move your cross-hair to your opponent. It has to be pretty close already. I would try to move it along quicker to my target. Just make sure not to go past him.

I suck at fps on consoles. I'm a kb/mouse fps'er all the way.

that said, WoW is like the pre-school of gaming. You can quite literally push one button over and over to get to level 80, and since there isn't really an ending, it's up to a guild leader to act as the binary factor in saying "yay/nay" at your level of skill when it comes to raid performance.

Most raid leaders are too afraid of pissing people off to act in an official manner so you wind up with a bunch of soft gamers that cant even clear ulduar.

go back to games that required skill, try the atari. seriously, mindnumblingly simple, but all they could do was push you to the edge of your hand/eye coordination.

I feel that a LOT of the modern games now circumvent the challenge factor in favor of "telling a story"

You have to be able to dissect the 2 and figure out if you're being challenged or not. Often times the games that make you a better gamer aren't really rich on story, sad to say.

Try Demon's Souls vs any rpg and you'll get an idea of what I mean.

Baraka_Guru 02-09-2010 03:45 PM

I generally suck as FPS and RTS. I think too much, and so my priorities lie in an internal world. That kind of thing gets you fragged. Repeatedly.

I'm more of a 4X/RPG/adventure gamer. I hate how turn-based gaming has fallen out of fashion. Well, I guess I should say I hate how 4X, RPG, and adventure games have fallen out of fashion.

Yeah, remember when you could get lost in a game?

Shauk 02-09-2010 03:50 PM

what are you getting at?

Baraka_Guru 02-09-2010 03:59 PM

Well, back in the day, it was much easier to wander around and lose your way in a game. Most games now have fail-safe measures built in to prevent that. In many cases, the game essentially "runs on rails."

Vaultboy 02-09-2010 09:48 PM

I prefer games that make it helluva difficult for you, but in essense never require a reload if you play/adapt well. I hated games that required you to die 500 times in order to iteratively memorise a level and/or to figure out the "trick" to beat the boss. Whilst I didn't suck at it, I more often than not got bored with it. Prince of Persia (the original) was a notable exception.

What I also disliked about some older games was how the CPU "cheats" to make it more difficult for you.

My favourite type of game is also turn-based (X-com), RPGs, Puzzle-adventure or a FPS like Far Cry where you decide the pace and strategy yourself.

guy44 02-10-2010 08:08 PM

Man I suck at a lot of games. I'm terrible at FPS except for Rainbow Six Rogue Spear, which for some reason I was great at. It felt amazing, being a really good player, competing against the best online players for once. Every other shooter I've ever played I've been worse than 10 year olds.

Also, RTS games. I was/am crap at those, too.
