Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
The Star Wars saga will continue in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, a videogame developed by LucasArts, which casts players as Darth Vader's "Secret Apprentice" and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The expansive story, created under direction from George Lucas, is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.

As its name implies, The Force Unleashed completely re-imagines the scope and scale of the Force by taking full advantage of newly developed technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time: Digital Molecular Matter (DMM), by Pixelux Entertainment, and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. Paired with the powerful Havok Physics™ system, these new technologies create gameplay only possible on the new generation of consoles. DMM incorporates the physical properties of anything in the environment so that everything reacts exactly like it should - wood breaks like wood, glass shatters like glass, plants on the planet Felucia bend like plants on the planet Felucia would, and more. Meanwhile, as a revolutionary behavioral-simulation engine, euphoria enables interactive characters to move, act and even think like actual human beings, adapting their behavior on the fly and resulting in a different payoff every single time.

Features
  • During the period between Episodes III and IV, players hunt Jedi in the role of Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice.
  • Unleash and upgrade the Secret Apprentice's four core Force powers - Force push, grip, repulse and lightning - throughout the course of the game, and combine them for ultra-destructive, never-before-seen combos.
  • Examples of unleashing the Force in ways never thought possible:
  • The Secret Apprentice won't just Force push enemies into walls - he'll Force push enemies through walls.
  • The Secret Apprentice won't just Force grip foes to throw them aside - he'll Force grip them in midair, zap them with lightning, then drop them to the ground to explode like a bomb.
  • In addition to new adversaries created just for the game, such as fugitive Jedi and Force-sensitive Felucians, players will also confront and associate with familiar faces from the Star Wars films, including Darth Vader.
  • Visit locations such as Episode III's Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk and the floral Felucia, the junk planet Raxus Prime, plus an Imperial TIE fighter construction facility.
  • Decisions made by players throughout the game will determine the path of the story, including multiple endings that will rock Star Wars continuity as they know it.
  • The Force Unleashed is LucasArts' first internally developed title for next-generation consoles, and it represents the first in-game collaboration of talents and technology between LucasArts and Industrial Light & Magic, two companies now finally under one roof at the new Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco's Presidio district.
  • The Force Unleashed debuts Digital Molecular Matter from Pixelux and euphoria behavioral simulation from NaturalMotion Ltd.
  • LucasArts is preparing an unprecedented promotional effort around the launch of The Force Unleashed, encompassing a full line of toys and game-based action figures from Hasbro, as well as a full publishing program from Dark Horse, Del Rey and Palace Press.

This looks like an incredible addition to the franchise. I really loved Jedi Knight and Dark Forces games. They brought enough of the mythos to the table and added some side story to fill in some blanks.

I was planning on upgrading the computer later this year, if this is really hot, I may have to do it sooner rather than later.

xepherys 08-09-2008 07:53 AM

It's one of my Xbox 360 pre-orders

Esoteric 08-09-2008 08:44 AM

I've been following this game for a few months now and it's definitely on my must buy list. Probably going to get the PS3 version instead of 360.

Lasereth 08-09-2008 10:18 AM

EGM is basically saying this game is a must-buy. Of course I will be buying it if it's good.

Reese 08-09-2008 12:22 PM

I dunno, I'm not sold on it just yet. I like the idea but I'm just not seeing gameplay to go along with those scripted in-game videos. The graphics look as next gen but the animation left me with a little to be desired. If it's bad in a cutscene, It's gonna be a lot worse in game. Also, I fear the camera and controls aren't going to be an improvement over the other SW games. Didn't see a lot of game play in those videos but the glimpses I saw kinda seemed like they wouldn't be much better.. I know I'm a picky son of a bitch but there's no reason why all games can't have fluid and realistic animations or at least very easy to do badass shit like God of War :)

Also.. Why did you mark spoilers for one.. when the trailer before it gives away ALOT more... I mean come on.. It shows him Spoiler: fighting vader!

xepherys 08-09-2008 12:39 PM

That's why I don't like watching trailers... *sigh*

Cynthetiq 08-09-2008 01:35 PM

the link that I posted has a number of gameplay videos at the bottom; gameplay looks commensurate to the cutscenes and other Jedi games

Actually, That didn't look as bad as I expected.

NoSoup 08-10-2008 05:15 PM

Any word on a release date?

DonnieBoy 08-16-2008 08:22 PM

I believe this is being released September 16, This might just make me go by a Xbox 360...

Fremen 08-16-2008 09:17 PM

The tv show "X-Play", on G4TV, did a SW:TFU special, and the guys that developed the game said a demo was coming out sometime in August for the 360 and PS3.

sadistikdreams 08-17-2008 10:23 PM

Thursday. The demo will be on XBL and PSN on Thursday.

That being said, I have so much wood for this game. Talkin bout hyper space wood, with a lightsaber hilt and deflector shields.

Oh, cool. It's my sister's birthday Thursday.
I'll dl the demo and think of her...

Thanks, sadistic.

Esoteric 08-21-2008 05:26 PM

Downloaded the PS3 demo earlier today and it's awesome. I'm going to also DL the 360 demo this weekend just to try it out. I'll be waiting for the reviews to see which version is better.

CyCo PL 08-21-2008 07:07 PM

I downloaded the PS3 demo but I had to go to work... gonna try it out before I go home and go to sleep. A good Star Wars game (that's not an RPG) sounds insane to me though. I'll believe it when I see it.
-----Added 22/8/2008 at 02 : 22 : 34-----
Update: It's awesome.

Fremen 08-22-2008 12:24 AM

I'm getting smeared in Sith mode by the TIE Fighters. I love it!

sadistikdreams 08-22-2008 06:07 AM

Eh, it's pretty cool. Not as much emphasis on lightsaber battle, I think it's more about HOLY SHIT! YOU CAN THROW YOUR LIGHTSABER AT TROOPERS!

ironpham 08-23-2008 10:21 PM

The demo was amazing. I couldn't figure out how to grab the Tie Fighters though. I loved the whole grabbing the enemy, throwing my saber into them, and using them as a weapon deal though. This game is definitely on my list to purchase.

Esoteric 08-24-2008 06:46 AM

People are complaining that the lightsaber doesn't just cut right through the soldiers, which is a pretty lame complaint imo. They didn't in KotOR either but that game was amazing. However, after playing the demo a couple more times I can see how the combat and force powers can get repetitive. Let's hope they have something in the final release to keep the gameplay fresh and fun.

That was my only complaint. The lightsaber goes right through the enemies. It doesn't cut. Even in Lego Star Wars, the lightsabers cut trhough the dudes. Weak.

EDIT: And the boss battle at the end? Quicktime actions? Also weak.

guthmund 08-25-2008 09:16 AM

I like the demo quite a bit.

I just don't see how you can get bored with slicing robots in half and chucking stormtroopers around....maybe it's just me.

Meier_Link 08-25-2008 04:10 PM

I wonder if you can swing the controller around like a light saber on the Wii. (I know the Wii is inferior graphically and the online sucks, but that might just make it worthwhile)

From what I understand it's not 1-to-1 matching, but rather I move my Wii-mote thusly, Sith-dude does this particular move.

As an achievement whore, I will, of course, be buying the 360 version, but the Wii version does look interesting....

Reese 08-27-2008 11:50 AM

Do you guys know how long it takes for new demos to become available to silver accounts? I can't download it yet and I'm not subscribing to Live just to download it.

Prophecy 08-27-2008 02:03 PM

Generally, demos are available after one week. Which should be the 28th for this demo. However, the SC IV demo is still for gold only members (the game has been out over a week).

Wow, I had no idea that they limited the demos to gold only for some of them. You'd think they would unlock it for everyone so it may increase sales :S. Its not like I bought a gold account just so I could play a stupid demo!

I did.

And it was worth it.

japhyryder 08-28-2008 05:30 AM

The demo was pretty good, I could see how it could be repetitive. I did not like the camera controls, I felt I spent more time moving the camera about then playing the game. Might be a buy but most likely a rental.

Lasereth 09-09-2008 10:11 AM

Well the reviews are coming in. EGM gave it a metascore of 56. Sounds more like The Suck Unleashed to me. Typical of a Star Wars game. Looks like KOTOR will still remain the best SW game out there.

Prophecy 09-10-2008 01:36 PM

Well EGM is the lowest rating so far. Most places are labeling it average but not the "suck" that EGM did.

japhyryder 09-10-2008 03:53 PM

The reviews were not surprising to me, I will rent it won't buy it.

Baraka_Guru 09-10-2008 04:15 PM

*sigh*

Lasereth 09-11-2008 04:18 AM

I don't have enough time to play average games. If a developer is gonna brand their new game as revolutionary and best SW game ever, etc. it better be more than "average."

ObieX 09-11-2008 04:28 AM

There's a nice marathon over at gamespot.com that shows all the versions if anyone is on the fence about which to pick r if they want to pick the game up at all

GameSpot Video: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Gameplay Marathon

Looks like the wii version is pretty much the PSP version. The saber duels do look fun tho on wii so i guess its not all that bad.

Seems like its going to be ok for a star wars game. Certainly not anything groundbreaking, but interesting and entertaining from what they show.

EDIT - HEAVY SPOILER ALERT btw....

hulk 09-15-2008 06:38 AM

A magazine here gave it 88/100, saying the quality of gameplay increase dramatically if you forget about the lightsaber and play with the Force (as intended) ;)

Actually you might have time to play this one, I'm reading it's only six hours long.* The more I read about the game, the more its sounds like a rental or a bargain bin dive in several months.

Again reviews aren't making the game sound like the return of Superman 64, but it is a significant step down from the AAA title it was billed as. What a shame.

On the upside supposedly the story actually feels like Star Wars.

*from OGM's Wii review, trying to find times on other verisons

Derwood 09-15-2008 12:56 PM

looks like a rental to me. too many luke warm reviews and not a very long single-player

Same. The video where he pulls a Star Destroyer out of the sky killed it for me.

ObieX 09-15-2008 04:39 PM

they really need to add a jedi knight II style mutliplayer. Have been playing the full version for a couple days now and its not bad. With just having single player tho i would call it a renter. I dont recommend against buying it however its a fun game. Jawa punting ftw.

Troublebot 09-17-2008 06:59 AM

I downloaded the demo and wasn't very thrilled with it. I was going to give it another try, but saw the X-Play review last night (2 out of 5 stars) and desided to keep playing Mercs 2 instead. I'll wait till this one's in the bargin bin and maybe pick it up then.
