What should I purchase?
PS3, Wii or XBox360?
Halo 3 is making me swing towards XBox 360 but I've always been partial to PS. And Wii, well it seems pretty sweet, something new. Agh, the decisions! |
Wii. Is more interactive.
... Or get yourself a Turbo Graphics 16. |
The 360 is the better of the 3 right now. Bioshock, Halo 3, Gears of War...3 games that are worth the purchase price of the console. Wii is cheap but has a terrible selection of good games. The PS3 has a decent selection of good games but it's too damn expensive, plus it has no system sellers like the 360 does. My vote goes with 360.
|
If you can wait until next year, PS3 will be getting some kick-ass games. Right now, there's not much to warrant a purchase (especially with the rumored price drop to $400 this holiday season).
360 has a bigger and more varied library, but personally I wouldn't buy it due to the failure rates. Yes, I know about the new warranty policy. Still. Wii...no opinion as I'm not interested in it in the least. I see it as a GameCube with new controls. |
I wish the PS3, but probably the 360. Too bad Sony couldn't make it work.
|
As everyone else already said, the PS3 currently is not worth it. Between the 360 and the Wii, the 360 definately has the better selection of games. The controls on the Wii are fun and all, but the novelty of it wears out pretty fast.
|
I'd go with the Wii just cuz I have a PC and most stuff that seems to land on the 360 has a PC port of some type due to microsoft being a PC giant.
besides, Wii is great for 2 people or more as a social console vs ps3/360 because they seem to have made it with the "get people together and be silly" crowd in mind. |
Why not buy the X-Box 360 and the Wii?
|
We love our PS3. It plays blu-ray discs and makes movie watching even better on our HDTv. The Darkness rocked, that was the only one I played for a bit until it freaked me out. And I've never seen my guy so pissed off as when he was playing Lair and yelling at the tv and PS3 while waving his arms around and bouncing around nekkid in frustration. We only have a tv in the bedroom.

Yeah the PS3 actually does have more good games than the Wii. I would have bought one already if it wasn't so expensive. Resistance: Fall of Man is spectacular and comes close to being a system seller. Motorstorm is great as well. None of these games get a lot of attention because...well, the PS3 is too expensive.

I have both a PS3 and a 360. My 360 got the 3 red lights of death though. I need to call Microsuck to get a coffin and get it fixed. Personally I like the PS3 better. I never hear any noise out of it. The Blu-Ray alone makes it worth it IMO.
Right now the games are better for the 360 though. In the long run I think the PS3 will have the better gaming library. Even by Christmas or early next year I think the PS3 will have the better games. I look at it this way. If I am thinking of buying a console for long term, I will look at the hardware itself and the lineup of games that are planned to come out for it. In this I think the PS3 has the edge. If I were looking for immediate fun, then I would pick up the 360. If it is an option for you, get both! :) |
Get a PC!

I'm probably getting a PS3 for me and my son after the holidays. Mostly because I have had the first two and we are Gran Turismo and Kingdom Hearts junkies.
|
The PS3 has been out for 10 months and it still only has 2 games worth playing. Resistance and Motostorm.
The 360's first year had Oblivion, Dead Rising, and Some great racing and sports games. It had Call of Duty 2, Kameo, Condemned, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Gears of War and heck it even had a pretty good Tomb Raider game. Not all of these games are perfect, but all of them together make a well rounded system. Then we got games like Castlevania SOTN on XB Arcade that also has some awesome little games like Geometry Wars. I'm sure you can find a post somewhere around here from a few years ago with me saying I was skipping the 360 or waiting on the good games.. Well the system has been putting out good games from the beginning and Sony hasn't put out crap worth playing since Resistance. The Wii is an oddball.. I got one and I love my bowling.. but honestly it doesn't have any "real" games worth playing. Flailing your arms wildly gets as much accomplished as actually trying to simulate the right movements.. It's more like work than fun.. |
I have all three (Yay! for disposable income) and I have to say that I get more play time out of my 360 than the other two, especially now that Halo 3 has been released.
The PS3 just doesn't have the games. Yes, Resistance is awesome, the new Ratchet and Clank comes out in October (right?) and it has a metric shit-ton of older Playstation titles in its catalog from its previous incarnations, but you can only play those two games so much I imagine, and I've already spent in inordinate amount of time with the back catalog of games. The Wii is fun, Zelda is great and the new Metroid sounds pretty amazing, but it still just isn't enough once the novelty wears off. The 360, however, has a pretty good catalog and excellent online play if you're brave enough to venture into it. |

I'm not a big fan of PC games and I don't really know why. I just have never liked them. Although, I'm buying Diablo, which is disgustingly overdue.
|
I've never played Diablo.
Anyway, 360 gets my vote. Halo 3 is the shit. |
Not to shit-talk Diablo or anything buuuut it does get quite boring pretty quick. Plus there's just too much clicking.
Apparently there have been rumors about Diablo 3? If it were an mmo, I would definitely lose the other half of my life (fuckin' WoW) |
The last video game I played was on an Atari 2400.
the game was Pitfall. my teenager however, thinks you should "get the PSIII because you can play PS, PSII and PSIII games on it, but the xbox360 wont let you play xbox games on it, and the wii you will just break something with it." |
there's really no reason to get a ps3 though because theres like 5 games on the ps3 that aren't also on the 360. theres a lot more title support from/for microsoft this time around. I have a ps1 and had a ps2 never owned an xbox, but given the climate of things, I'd just say they're the one to jump with this time.

The 360 does let you play XBox games. They recently updated their BC list a few months ago, so now even more XBox games are playable on the 360. |
Quote:
Last I heard, you could only play PSX games on the PS3 if you downloaded them for a price from the PSN. If you want to play only PSX and PS2 games buying a PS2 is still the best bet. Game-wise the PS3 isn't worth a purchase, yet. About backwards compatibility, unless you have a launch console PS3, both the PS3 and 360 offer backwards compatibility through software emulation. Meaning neither console allows you to play through the full library of their previous generation titles. However, both do let you play some previous gen titles. Back on topic, as it stands on 09-29-2007 I'm casting another vote for the 360 over the PS3 and the Wii. |

I just played the Wii for the first time yesterday. It was just what I remembered Nintendo for being going all the way back to the early 80s. Plain and simple fun games that are easy to pick up and master the basics. It was fun to play the sports games.
My friend who played with me picked up DDR for the sake of it being some excercise. |

A lot of the Wii games really get you involved and working. Boxing on Wii Sports is a great workout. Phew. I vote for the Wii, because I love mine, and if you like to play something besides the typical FPS console game, the Wii is for you (though I do really like Medal of Honor Vanguard on the Wii. It's kind of fun to point and shoot). |

1) The minor rant: It's Xbox. No hyphen required. 2) With Bioshock, Halo 3, Forza 2, PGR4 (in 12 days) to name just the current classics, a 360 is never going to be a bad idea. Of course you then have all the playable but older games such as PGR3, Splinter Cell, Gears of War and the soon to be had games GTA4, Mass Effect, etc, etc 3) As MonomAnny says, in the UK you can get both the Xbox and the Wii for the exact same price as the PS3*. Seems like an easy choice to me :) *Based on basic packages from gameplay.com, better deals may exist, this was just the first and only place I looked. |
Speaking from an "as-is" or "today" perspective:
Xbox 360 is the clear choice. I have all 3 systems, and I've played the 360 probably 500% more than the others combined. The 360 has more "system seller" games than Wii or PS3 will have in at least a year. 360 all the way. It's fucking insane the deal that you can get now - the premium system with HDMI for $350. Go out, get a 360, and buy Gears of War, Bioshock, and Halo 3 and don't look back Main reasons Wii doesn't get my vote: graphics suck ASS. Play Bioshock and Gears of War and then try to boot up some Zelda, and it's just down right depressing. Graphics don't make a game, but when the graphics aren't even as good as Resident Evil 4 on GameCube, it is embarassing. Main reason PS3 doesn't get my vote: too expensive and like 2 "purchase worthy" games. The "Top Three" on 360 right now are better than any of the "best games" on PS3 or Wii. 360 is the winner for now. My thoughts for the future: Wii is in trouble. Those graphics are just horrendous. I never thought I would hate on Nintendo like this, but jesus, the controls aren't "mind blowing" enough to make up for the craptacular graphics. Sony needs to crank up the seriousness of getting out some good games, and quick. They need to make absolutely sure Gran Turismo 5 is ungodly awesome - I believe the Gran Turismo 2 or 3 (can't remember which) is the best selling videogame of all time (Mario doesn't count!) - they need to really make GT5 an awesome game. Also, GTA 6 needs to be super stellar as well. If it's just as good as San Andreas, the PS3 has a nice future ahead. |
Quote:
As for the systems.. go 360. The Wii games are fun and all but the 360 is probably the better system. The graphics are lots better, and the game selection on the 360 is better for the "hardcore" gamer. Wii is good for party games and Zelda, but thats about it tbh. There are the old nintendo console games downloadable for Wii. So if that strikes a cord with you then go for that. 360 has some console games downloadable but i dont think there are as many as wii and you wont find nintendo ones with 360. |

Despite the failure/crash rates of the 360, it seems like the clear best choice right now. Of course, with the nice hardware inside the PS3, you know it's going to be good for a long time!
|
Well, out of all the systems, I actually enjoy the Wii more than any of the others. I pick up the Wii and play that for about an hour then do other things. It also has some great group playing games that are worth it if you hang out with your friends for long periods of time. The Wii lacks graphics, but makes up for it in game play.
PS3 is very expensive and not worth the effort at the moment. Not enough titles to keep me happy. 360 has an extensive selection already and some great titles. This is the system if your a hard core gamer that wants the graphics and the more action based games. (FPS, RPG, etc.) I am getting a 360 next year when they fix the GPU. At least they finally are fixing the CPU to the 65 nm. |

I love games on my PC and just can't imagine getting into that whole "I have to buy the PS4.... XBOX720..... WiiWii" insanity. Then you have to buy whatever so you can play the games from the old system. If your system can't handle the game you go and upgrade and it's a Hell of a lot cheaper and needed far less often. And as far as game titles go.... PC gets probably all of the major ones anyway. PC is the only way to go. |

X360...
You can get an HD-DVD player for it, which is equal in quality to BD-DVD, but you aren't FORCED to pay for it up front. It has some great platformers, as mentioned above... Halo, Bioshock, Gears of War. There are a LOT of developers that used to be Sony-only that are making 360 games as well (some are even 360 only, look at Namco Bandai, a huge Sony dev house). XBL still proves a better matchmaking service than Home. XBLA still has some of the best classic/arcade gaming options and has some great unique titles. Did I mention Halo and Bioshock? The new GTA, if that's your thing, already has X360 EXCLUSIVE content locked down (not time-delayed, but truly exclusive). Some of these are due to Microsoft throwing money around that Sony can't afford to do right now. Perhaps it's underhanded, but it's why I love MS. Come over to the dark side Jenna! |

Oh, and DDR rocks...we've played it for 2 hours plus every night so far :) |
If you want excerise for Wii, then this is for you: http://e3nin.nintendo.com/wii_fit.html

That is intriguing...and it cannot possibly make me look any dorkier than I do when we play DDR :)
I will have to wait to see it in action though, doesn't look like it has many (if any) aerobic-type exercises. |
There's a video on the site.

What kind of question it this? Get a Wii. SSB:B. Online capabilities. December 3rd. What else is there to say?
:D |
Simple, say what SSB:B stands for?
I think the PS3 may have a better line up in the future, but its not really an issue given the 360 has all the good games now instead. Sure, you can wait 6 months if you like... ;) Update: Super Smash Bros? |

Really depends on what type of gamer you are. I consider myself to be somewhat of a hardcore gamer, and the Wii isn't really meant for those types. Most of the games seem to be short attention span minigames or novelty games. I play my PS2 a lot more than my Wii.
|

It's just unfortunate they haven't fixed the problem that's affecting so many systems. The GPU is what is causing the 360 to crash a lot. They are attempting to "fix" the problem, but it won't be fixed until early next year is what they are projecting. |

So, if you are into the arcade style games, then the Wii is a good choice. |
PC is the way to go, but if you're set on getting a console, go with a Wii. PS3 and X360 are basically computers anyway, except they don't get RTS games, which are IMO the best sort. Wii is definitely the most innovative of the new consoles.

Sonic, and Snake from Metal Gear Solid are in Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Need I say more?? It's SSB!! With online play!
Also, Super Mario Galaxy is coming out this month, and looks like it'll be the best platform game in years, IMO. Get the Wii, for now there is Zelda, Metroid, Super Paper Mario, Sports (duh). Those games will keep you busy, they're really fun. And soon SSBB and SM Galaxy. |
Unfortunatley, SSB:B has been delayed for another two months or so :(
Damn, Nintendo! |
With the list of top selling games... Note how MOST of them are Nintendo?
Wii will rock you! 360. To me, that reminds me of 10 year olds shouting at their mother to bring them a milk shake. That and 3 red lights of DOOM as soon as the warranty runs out. Sony: Most expensive. ^^ The song is quite good. Personally, I would Wii. Super Smash Bro Brawl.... Legend of Zelda < *drool* I <3 Zelda games! |
I like my 360.
The Wii is good for a party in fact I think that's where it shines multiplayer and party settings but when I want to sit in the basement and geek...I'll take my 360. |

"Now you know how you killed your brand." The PS3 is massively outselling the 360 in Japan, it only took the PS3 a month to catch up with the 360's sales for a whole year. This may not mean as much in the US as it does in Japan, but it definitely means that the PS3 will be receiving more support from Japanese developers like, to name a few, Capcom, Konami, and Square Enix. Sony may have lost some exclusive titles to the 360 (Devil May Cry 4), but I guarantee that the PS3 will eventually get some great exclusive titles once it regains its foothold, which is already beginning to happen since the last price drop. It's no surprise that the Wii is outselling them both, but I don't really compare the Wii with the 360 or PS3. The Wii is a last-generation console with a nifty controller. It is also a game console created generally for non-gamers, so it makes sense that it's reached a larger audience than 360/PS3. I guarantee that Wii owners who are hardcore gamers will eventually be driven to buying one of the real next-gen consoles if they haven't already. Despite all of the backlash Sony received for saying it, the Wii really is a novelty. |
Quote:
lol I had one. Only 3 games I remember Bonks Adventure Bloody Wolf Splatterhouse |
I think it depends on the types of games you like to play.
Wii is probably better suited for the non-hardcore gamers while the other 2 consoles would be more for the typical games. |
So I am bringing this thread back, since its been like a year since someone has posted here. I'm still wondering if the PS3 still stacks up to the Wii? My friend has a Wii but I'm a hardcore Playstation fan because I've had one my whole life.
I've looked at the games and Wii has the "party" games where a bunch of friends come over and chill with you. And the PS3 has some of the games geared towards me. But I still don't know, is the PS3 still worth it? |
The Wii is a totally different beast from the PS360 debates. The Wii offers a completely different experience and markets itself as such. That makes it really hard to compare it to the PS3/360/PC markets. Most of my friends either own a Wii & a 360 or a Wii & PS3. I suggest just going with which ever experience you'll enjoy more: The "casual" experience is more Nintendo and the "hardcore" experience is more Sony.
Now about "is the PS3 worth it?" Unless you want one of Sony's exclusive titles (MGS4, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, etc) and/or Blu Ray I'd say no it's not worth it. I'd wait for the next price drop, keep in mind Sony said they have no plans to drop the price any more this year (even for Christmas). The main issue for me is you can now get an Xbox 360 and stand alone Blu-Ray player for roughly the same price as a new 80 GB PS3. Again, the only real question is which exclusive titles do you want. |
Quote:
|
You're probably going to end up buying both eventually (given what you've said about yourself and your gaming habits), so don't look at it as an either/or proposition, look at it as which one you're going to buy first.
I know you've mentioned that you want to pick a console your fiancee can enjoy as well; if she's not really into gaming, that console would be the Wii. If she is into gaming, and has played games like Grand Theft Auto and Soul Calibur before, you'd want to choose the PS3 first. We have both (I own the Wii, my SO's brother owns the PS3) and the Wii is generally more popular at parties. The only game that really went over well in a party situation on the PS3 is Soul Calibur IV. We get asked to bring our Wii with us to other houses; even my parents requested that I bring it for Thanksgiving. I like having both--I get to play the PS3-exclusive titles and I have a fun console to share with friends. Oh! The other thing to keep in mind is what kind of TV you have. If you have an non-HD TV, the PS3 will look like crap, but the Wii will still look good. You need an HDTV to really appreciate the PS3, and to read all the text in-game. We ran into that problem on the PS3 with GTA4; you couldn't read the text messages at all on our non-HDTV. Hope that helps. |
Quote:
That isn't to say the 360 isn't good but it's not ridiculously lower than the PS3 andif you get something that isn't an Elite, which is the same price as the PS3, there's still the large possibility of getting the RROD. Am I right on that? But, yeah the PS3 is worth it...and so is the 360. |
I like my PS3. it's coolest. you could get a wii and xbox for the price but you still wouldn't have a blue ray player.
if you get a PSP you can play PS1 games via remote play. |
Quote:
Someone already covered the price aspect of buying a PS3 vs. getting a 360 and stand alone Blu-Ray player, so I won't repeat that; but I will add something to it. The stand-alone Blu-Ray players do not allow for firmware updates whereas, the PS3 does have the ability to receive firmware updates. That may not seem like a major factor, but as the format is improved, firmware will need to be updated, however infrequently that may be. I have had a PS3 for almost a year and haven't regretted buying it at all. |
From my experience, the wii is kind of an entirely different choice. if you'd enjoy a lot of it's outside the box gadget games and the particular flavor of mario and anime, it's for you.
otherwise, if you're new to gaming or outside the nintendo family, i'd choose based my my household technology level. if you're cutting edge with hd everywhere, ps3 is a bit ahead of the curve and will probably soon catch up to the 360 where it excels, which is biggest catalog and best online system. if you still have a 200 pound tv, 360 is more forgiving with older setups and will blow you away right now online and socially. hopefully after this much time, the ring-of-death bug is mostly past, just stay off craigslist. |
360 has the $20/mo fee for online play. PS3 goes online for FREE.
$20/mo will add up fast if you like online play. Gamestop has refurb PS3's that have backwards compatibility to PS2 and PS3's work with all PS1 games. a fair bit of free add ons for games on the Playstation store PS3 is also a much more powerful platform. PS3 has motion sensing 6 axis controller (sorta like the Wii) w/ force feedback...plus, the PS controller is just really nice. PS3 also has Bioshock, Resistance 1&2 Gran Turismo, Grid, Soul Calibur...I think it has Fallout as well but not sure. it may not have as much 3rd gen games as a 360 now but it will. overall if you consider all the game generations it's got more games and a Wii or 360. plus DVD and Blue Ray. not much point in getting an HD DVD drive for a 360 now.... |
We bought the PSIII for the Blu Ray and now I have read that the XBox will allow you to stream Netflix movies. Also a nice bonus feature!
|
So I bought a PS3.
OMFG!!!!! IT IS THE GREATEST THING EVER!!! I invited my friend over that has a 360 and he says that it blows his system out of the water. I think Resistance: Fall of Man is going to be a mainstay for the PS3. I love all the games I have (Resistance, Sonic, Mirror Edge, and Armored Core.) I waited three days before I got my HDMI cable and when that went in... holy crap did the graphic get better ten fold. Sorry guys, its all PS3 for me, plus the geek squad here has a promotion to upgrade to 250GB for $150 extra, which makes it all more of a steal!!! |

I'm definitely biased towards my 360, but that's because I enjoy achievements and online play. Plus the new dashboard is amazing. I have a ps3 as well... which just sits there untouched 90% of the time unless an exclusive comes out like Resistance or something. Just for me, the ps3 can't compare in the least to 360 in terms of fun, online play, and achievements. The trophy system is complete phail, and the online has no personality to it like xbox. Sorry...

I have the 360 elite. The new netflix is great, very easy to use. I also like how it streams media from my pc. I did get a chance to play with my nephew's wii over thanksgiving. The controller is fun with the sports package, but not enough to actually purchase one. I will probably get a ps3 someday for the blu-ray capabilities. From what I understand, the ps3 picture is equal to any other player out there and the ps3 upscales dvds very nicely. Plus, forza motorsport is nice, but gran turismo was always amazing. But still rocking the xbox for a year without issues.

I just found my PS3 recharges my Sony walkman and will also serve as a dock with all the music accessable. and all the movies on my PSP too.
I know it will work with a external usb hard drive too but I don't need that yet. |
