Is that the famous Golden Cedar that some nut bar killed a few years back?

fresnelly 02-13-2006 04:46 PM

Is it in Stanley Park, Vancouver?

Lumberman's Arch in Stanley Park?:

Lumbermen's Arch, a log archway, is at Km 3 (Mi 2) of the drive. There's a picnic area, a snack bar, and a small beach here. The Children's Water Park, across the road, is a big draw throughout the summer. Cyclists and walkers can turn off here for a shortcut back to the aquarium, the Miniature Railway and Children's Farmyard, and the park entrance.

Janey 02-15-2006 07:02 AM

Is that in Victoria? It looks like a fancy BC building

fresnelly 02-15-2006 07:14 AM

Tsk, tsk, Janey. ;) This is St. Lawrence Hall in Toronto, at King St E. and Jarvis.
Quote:

Built in 1850 to serve as the City's public meeting place, the Hall has over the years hosted numerous memorable events. Jenny Lind, the Swedish Nightingale, sang to packed houses here in 1851. Ten years later, Tom Thumb attracted scores of fascinated spectators.

Restored in 1967 as the City of Toronto's Centennial project, the St. Lawrence Hall continues as a site for social and business functions, large and small. St. Lawrence Hall is spacious enough to handle large conferences and meetings, yet intimate enough to hold a small gathering. The complex has a history of drawing people to it for a wide variety of reasons. Today the Hall is the facility of choice for the film industry, serving as a staging ground for TV series, movie sets and music videos.

Leto 02-15-2006 08:26 PM

Louisberg?

Charlatan 02-16-2006 04:28 AM

Doesn't look like Louisberg... all the pictures I was looking at don't have that distinctive brick structure.

fresnelly 02-16-2006 06:18 AM

Not Louisberg, but definately a Fort.

Hint: It's in Upper Canada.

Charlatan 02-16-2006 06:36 AM

Fort Mississauga in Niagara-on-the-Lake...

fresnelly 02-16-2006 06:58 AM

That's the one; unattended and sitting in the middle of a golf course, at the edge of the water.

Charlatan 02-16-2006 01:12 PM

Game on Leto.

BigBen 02-16-2006 02:34 PM

I renew my protest that this thread is elitist and very "Charlatan Geographic" centered.

I would like to invite people to my thread (which I will be creating shortly) called "Where am I .... In Saskatchewan?"

Charlatan 02-16-2006 03:35 PM

Hey! Who was it that posted pictures of your hometown... Winnipeg?

Lucifer 02-16-2006 05:35 PM

Yeah, I'll be starting "where am I in Newfoundland?"

fresnelly 02-16-2006 05:50 PM

I'll be starting "Where are my keys in...?

cellophanedeity 02-16-2006 08:29 PM

"Where am I in places that cello spends time in?"

What a boring thread that would be! ;)

Leto 02-16-2006 08:32 PM

noooo cello! that wouldn't be boring at all... post some!

here's an inside shot:

aberkok 02-17-2006 04:18 PM

Since I've just about had it with my photi being guessed in about two seconds, I've decided to up the challenge:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c1...llinCanada.jpg

...alright just kidding...where am I standing? What am I looking at?:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c1...reinCanada.jpg

Charlatan 02-17-2006 04:38 PM

That has to be under the Marquee at the Paradise Cinema.

It was a porn house just before it became part of the Festival Cinemas chain. Friends of mine cleaned it out. They found a "room" at the back where the working ladies would help out the customers. They described the smell of the place as "funky."

The last time I was there was back in the 90s with a bunch of staff from the Bloor Cinema (where I was working at the time). We were there to see Polyester and we had dropped some sweet acid. It was the start of one of the oddest evenings I think I ever spent and included madness, blowing snow and a nuclear reactor.

skier 02-17-2006 05:57 PM

Oh man sweet karma

05:18 PM
05:38 PM

aberkok 02-17-2006 08:28 PM

Yeah, yeah....laugh it up. I'll stump you guys yet (and by you guys, I really mean Charlatan). I knew I shouldn't have stood under the Paradise marquee.

Gaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyuuuummmmmmmmm ON!

Charlatan 02-18-2006 04:57 AM

Ok... next.

Location and name of the building.

Chateau Laurier Ottawa?

Charlatan 02-18-2006 10:06 AM

No. Not in Ottawa.

fresnelly 02-18-2006 10:11 AM

Hotel MacDonald in Edmonton?

Bossnass 02-18-2006 10:55 AM

I can't say 100%, but I'm pretty sure that it isn't the hotel mac.

fresnelly 02-18-2006 11:11 AM

Yeah, I don't think the roof is quite right. Sure is similar though.

Bossnass 02-18-2006 11:44 AM

Well then I'd venture that its another fairmont property, but I have found a picture to match.

Leto 02-18-2006 12:45 PM

ChateAu Frontenac, Quebec city, Quebec, Canada?

Charlatan 02-19-2006 05:30 AM

No right answers so far... I know there are at least two people on this thread who know where and what this is..

By the way, it isn't a CP/Fairmont Hotel.

james t kirk 02-19-2006 10:15 AM

Is it the Quebec Legislature?

Or, more accurately, the Quebec National Assembly?

Charlatan 02-19-2006 10:16 AM

No. It isn't in Quebec or Ontario.

BigBen 02-20-2006 12:01 PM

That is the Bessborough Hotel, in Saskatoon Saskatchewan.

The camera is standing on the Vimy Memorial Bandshell, facing north.

It is the most picturesque building in Saskatoon, and next to the Provincial Legislature, the entire province.

And, BTW, although not originally a CP hotel, it fell under the same chain for years due to its historical nature. It is now part of the Delta chain of hotels.

This picture tells the great story of HOAR frost. Corract spelling, but people look at you funny when you say it. Yanks don't usually see it, and visitors are often overwhelmed by our "Diamond Trees" (as one japanese man once said)...http://www.hrhousing.sk.ca/images/saskatoon.jpg

Charlatan 02-20-2006 12:19 PM

I knew our boy from the sticks would get this one...

It looks like a beautiful hotel... and I knew what Hoar Frost was.

BigBen 02-20-2006 12:49 PM

No, no it's not.

I am looking for the town, and the mile-marker with the sign behind it should help.

Hell, you guys and your Toronto photos was way harder than this.

Charlatan 02-20-2006 01:29 PM

Prince Albert, Sask

Charlatan 02-20-2006 01:35 PM

That's Duck Lake and that's "Bev and I" in the photo... I knew I'd seen it before.

BigBen 02-20-2006 02:03 PM

Game on, Charlie.

Let's keep this thread in the prairies for a bit, just for the sake of national unity, eh?

And by that I don't mean those damned pretty mountains. I mean the PRAIRIES.

That first one is my uncle's farm... good year for hay this year. Too wet to cut, but a bumper crop nonetheless.

The second one... Shit, I have to get out more.

Leto 02-21-2006 10:12 AM

I was going to say the corner of King & jarvis - or Sherbourne... ish.

But looking at those light standards, I don't think that this is in Toronto.

Charlatan 02-21-2006 10:17 AM

This is not in Toronto. This is in one of the three prarie provinces as requested by the grumpy bigben...

BigBen 02-21-2006 11:28 AM

Why I otta....

Is it downtown Calgary?

Charlatan 02-21-2006 11:30 AM

Nope. Not a big city. Come on Little House on the Prairie... you should be able to get this one.

BigBen 02-21-2006 11:48 AM

That isn't City Hall in Moose Jaw, is it?

Name the bridge.

If it is too hard, I will start giving clues.

skier 02-21-2006 02:39 PM

It looks like that one (cpr? CN?) rail bridge in Saskatoon... I can't see the neat metal staircase you climb up to go across the walkway though.

splck 02-21-2006 05:40 PM

CNR bridge over the South Saskatchewan river.

edit...didn't see skier had aready posted an answer.

skier 02-21-2006 07:11 PM

Just outside of town, near Radium Hot Springs? I totaly recoginze the stone roadside barrier and the pass through the rock, and I think it is on the north side, coming into town from the kootney pass. It could be south of the hot springs, right before invermere though.

james t kirk 02-25-2006 10:01 AM

looks like an old railway cut, but with the railway gone now.

wow. you should have had some chowder and mussels from the Crabby Shack. without a doubt, the tastiest, and cheapest food we had while on the Island. Cora's was a close second (and there's a Cora's in Toronto too now)

When I saw your pic, I just had to show mine... my kids faces have been cropped in accordance to the Forum rules, but they are fans of Sponge Bob and so this place was a natural!
