I didn't even see the broken glass... That's just eerie.

Bossnass 02-03-2006 03:39 PM

Keeping with the church theme, I think this one may be a gimmie.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...IM0649edit.jpg

Ack. Sorry about the size. That is 25% size of the original image.

Lucifer 02-04-2006 07:11 AM

this is a gimmie? maybe if you're the Pope!

Bossnass 02-04-2006 07:56 AM

It has been guessed already in this thread, although not featured in this thread.

And since I expect to be away from a computer for the next 24 hoursish:
Use self control!

Hints Spoiler: East Coast

Spoiler: Cabot Trail

Where was I, in Canada....Spoiler: Looking at St-Peters/Saint-Pierre's in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia on the Cabot Trail of Cape Breton

Lucifer 02-04-2006 08:25 AM

I thought that was it, cause it was me that made the original guess. this is the church in Cheticamp, NS. I actually took a shower in the church basement in the summer of '97.

Lucifer 02-04-2006 10:33 AM

mmmm, maybe I should post something, here's an easy one:

Leto 02-05-2006 07:04 PM

trans-canada hwy mile marker? mile 1?

Lucifer 02-06-2006 04:15 AM

mmmmm, no.
BTW, there is no activity on this thread on the weekends! WTF?? are we pasty computer nerds or not?

fresnelly 02-06-2006 06:18 AM

I'm a pasty computer nerd, but I'm stumped. Given the elements of the inset sculpture, my best guess is that it's a monument to St. George blessing those kids from Mary Poppins.

Charlatan 02-06-2006 06:29 AM

The lions and unicorns and the cross in the centre are a stylization of the Newfoundland and Labrador Coat of Arms.

Is this the entrance to Memorial University?

I was on this thread many times over the weekend, but had no idea where that picture was. I finally threw a guess in as a bump... thinking that it had something to do with the Rock...

Lucifer 02-06-2006 07:11 AM

Charlatan is on the right track with the coat of arms, but on the wrong track with the Memorial University.

what are the two figures doing? What is the significance?

Lucifer 02-06-2006 07:12 AM

We should have a "warmer, warmerer, hotter, boiling" kind of rating thing going on here.

Charlatan 02-06-2006 07:26 AM

It's hard to make out just what they are doing... looks like they have crossed swords or are sharing a pair of scissors.

Lucifer 02-06-2006 07:47 AM

Crossed swords.

Charlatan 02-06-2006 08:16 AM

Does this have to do with John Cabot?

The entrance to Cabot tower?

Lucifer 02-06-2006 08:31 AM

It's in that area, but not to do with Cabot Tower. Remember the title of my photography post. Head in that general direction.

Leto 02-06-2006 01:44 PM

not knowing your photography post, i'll take a stab at: the entrance to St John's ?

Lucifer 02-06-2006 01:53 PM

no, it's not. Well, not exactly. More like "guarding" the entrance to St. John's.

Charlatan 02-06-2006 01:59 PM

Is this at the entrance to Signal Hill?

Leto 02-06-2006 02:02 PM

castle hill entrance?

Lucifer 02-06-2006 05:28 PM

Charlatan is once again on the right track...There is a fort there. I want the name of the fort. Jeez, some people need it all spelled out for them...

Bossnass 02-06-2006 06:23 PM

Along the road to fort amherst?

Lucifer 02-06-2006 08:13 PM

close but wrong side of the harbour.

Am I being too picky? please advise...

Leto 02-06-2006 08:16 PM

well... how about Fort Townsend? talk about a toughie...

Charlatan 02-06-2006 08:33 PM

Fort Chain Rock or maybe Fort William?

Lucifer 02-07-2006 04:54 AM

I was actually looking for Fort Waldegrave. this marker is at the bottom of the Signal Hill road just about where you turn off the main road for the walking trails that lead out to the old Forts and batteries. Signal Hill was armed intermittently from 1696 to 1945. This is excerpted from an excellent site Newfoundland Forts:

Several batteries were located here including, Battery Waldegrave (built on the site of the old North Castle Battery) a two-gun battery complementing Chain Rock Battery, Queen's Battery (1796 - 1870) above North Head, Wallace's Battery, Duke of York's Battery (site), and Carronade Battery. All of these were built during the Napoleonic Wars (1800 - 1815). French forces from Placentia captured St. John's in 1696, 1705, and 1709. The French briefly held the town again in 1762. The British (who may have called it Fort St. John's) captured and used the hill to bomb the French-held Fort William. This was the last battle of the French and Indian / Seven Years' War in North America. The British viewed the Hill as a final retreat for Forts William and Townshend. A blockhouse was built here in 1795. It was demolished in 1810 to plan for a Martello Tower, which was never built. New barracks were built on the hill and at Queen's Battery in the 1830's. The Hill was refortified during the American Civil War. British forces left in 1870. The Cabot Tower was built in 1897 for Queen Victoria's birthday celebration. It is not a defensive structure, but may have been used as a lookout.
Fort Waldegrave (the old battery dismantled 1868, rebuilt 1916) was used in World War I (1916 - 1920). The barracks became a dance hall, but were eventually torn down. The two 4.7-inch guns that were here were transferred to Fort Amherst in 1941. The gun area is now a parking lot.
The Americans built two coastal defence batteries here in 1941, each consisting of an 8-inch M1888 gun on a M1918 barbette carriage, located at the present-day parking lot for Cabot Tower. The two guns were removed and relocated to Redcliff Head in 1942. A battery of four 155mm guns on panama mounts was located here, until moved to Middle Cove and Manuels. This position was considered a subpost of Fort Pepperrell

Leto 02-07-2006 05:43 AM

well.... I went with townsend based on the limited information that I could find eg this linky: http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/nl/signa...l/histor_e.asp

snip from above:

"In June 1762, the French again captured St. John's, this time to strengthen France's bargaining position after the loss of Louisbourg and Québec. In September, the British reclaimed the Town when Lieutenant-Colonel William Amherst advanced on St. John's from Torbay. By taking Signal Hill first, Amherst had a strategic advantage over the French at Fort William. They surrendered after a night of mortar bombardment from the Hill. Fort Townsend was built in the 1770s, out of range of Signal Hill's guns. "

skimming throught the words found townsend, but not waldegrave.

at least Charlatan got Fort William....

Would anybody mind if I posted a pic, to keep the ball rolling? No? okay here goes:

This should be easy, and segues nicely with the fort theme:

aberkok 02-07-2006 07:34 AM

THAT is Confederation Park, Kingston!!

Leto 02-07-2006 07:39 AM

Game on Aberkok!

I had to dig in my archives for that one. I took it in the winter of '79, so there may be a few differences, but not significant. For example, you can see two of the (how many? 4? 5? ) Martello towers that dot the Kingston shoreline. These two (one at the marina here, and one in the distance by Fort Henry/RMC) are what were referred to in the posting above by Lucifer in the discussion of Fort Waldegrave...

These made for a nice visual backdrop to undergrad shenanigans..

aberkok 02-07-2006 08:23 AM

Probably won't be too hard...

aberkok 02-07-2006 08:46 AM

Game on, Fresnelly! Charlatan, obviously you were right, but not as specific.

yes, I've wanted to get to the rock to take in Dildo Days....

so, is it game on to Charlatan?

fresnelly 02-07-2006 09:31 AM

Right on Charlatan. The filtration plant served as the Secret Headquarters of "The Man" in Undercover Brother, which was filmed in all the usual places in Toronto. She done blowed up real good.

These shots were taken by the fire safety company that oversaw the shoot: http://www.fufs.ca

Charlatan 02-07-2006 10:04 AM

No... not in Montreal.

Leto 02-07-2006 10:10 AM

wait, that building in the background looks familiar. Kind of like the federal building at Yonge & sheppard, but there's so much open space around it.

Could it be in Ottawa?

Bossnass 02-07-2006 10:12 AM

Gatineau; Jacques Cartier Park.

My cousin just finished up work on the Rocket movie.

Charlatan 02-07-2006 10:25 AM

Game on Bossnass...

Bossnass 02-07-2006 10:26 AM

Stolen without permission from a website, since I'm no where near any of my photos. I don't even know if it is a good photo, since this old utility word processing station appears to be running in 16 colours. But I've been there, and I'd guess Charlatan has too.

A hint for all you early rising more easterly time zone types.

In an Ontario town, a smallish place, known for its limestone buildings. Has a solid nickname that would be a total giveaway, if I haven't already.

Leto 02-08-2006 04:18 AM

okay... Kingston is known as the Limestone city... but it's not that smallish. That building looks like a mix of dolomitic and marine limestone. There is a fairly well known building that has that attribute around kingston... * off to check my friend google...

* edit: a few hours later: I'm stymied. And not getting any work done. looked around for limestone buildings that are museums, libraries, masonic temples, firehalls in small town ontario... gotta go back to work.

Charlatan 02-08-2006 09:29 AM

That's St. Mary's town hall... though I don't know what the nickname of the town is I do know St. Mary's Cement (my Dad used to haul sand and gravel for a living).

Edit: Just checked. The Stone Town is the nickname. Brian1975 would have got this one easy, if he was playing...

Iqaluit airport?

Charlatan 02-08-2006 12:01 PM

Oops, I missed your post Leto... game on!

(I figured we've done something from each of the provinces so it was time to head north).

Leto 02-08-2006 12:12 PM

cool. I've never been there myself. Been tempted to cash in my aeroplan miles just to visit it tho.

so, I have this picture that is kind of neat that I want to share with the country:

Charlatan 02-08-2006 12:16 PM

Toronto, back side of the Gooderham and Worts building (also called the flatiron building). When I was a bike courier I would often drop packages at Toronto Life (just across the road) and then have lunch in the park.

There is a very cool and ancient elevator inside. They have a full time elevator operator that runs it.

It is a very cool building, and I think it is one of the best 'back-sides' to any building that I've seen. I mean, what else can you do, with the front being so dramatic?

By the way, here is my recent pic of it to compare to yours:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...0/32911eaa.jpg

Remember the name of the pub that used to be in the basement?

I know where those pillars are. I have to think about the name of the place...

fresnelly 02-08-2006 01:10 PM

Those pillars are the "Theatre" on the grounds of the Guild Inn, in Scarborough. If you're into the achitectural history of this city, it's a must see.

From: http://www.toronto.ca/culture/the_guild.htm

Quote:

The extensive private gardens surrounding the buildings became the site of a personal building conservation program by Rosa and Spencer Clark, whereby fragments from demolished buildings in and around Toronto were rescued by their efforts and re-erected to create a sculpture garden. Passing into the public domain in 1978, the grounds became a public park and the art and sculpture on display in the gardens became a unique attraction to this lovely setting atop the Scarborough Bluffs.
In other words, those pillars used to be on facade downtown.

fresnelly 02-08-2006 01:15 PM

This is the second in my series of buildings owned by the insane...

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...Picture031.jpg

Charlatan 02-08-2006 01:17 PM

Game on Fresnelly...

I love the Guild Inn. My wife and I had a very important picnic there when we were first dating and later, stayed there for an anniversary (the hotel was a real dump). Sadly, they closed the place down in 2001 and are tearing it down. The gardens and the cool bit of Toronto acrhitectural past are still there and being maintained.

They have been talking about building a new hotel/spa on the sight as well as a dock at the water's edge and a funicular to bring passangers up to the gardens... that would be nice.

Charlatan 02-08-2006 01:18 PM

That is the wacky shop at Logan and Gerrard (right across the road from the Beers Store that inspired this thread).

Two blocks from my house. The guy who owns this also used to own a house at Simpson and Broadview... ghastly (even more than the last crazy house you posted). It has since been sold and renovated.

fresnelly 02-08-2006 01:19 PM

Full circle! Is his house near Broadview still around?

Charlatan 02-08-2006 01:25 PM

I was editing as you posted... no, it isn't around anymore.

Leto 02-08-2006 01:28 PM

Scarborough Civic Centre!

I was there for the opening by the Queen. Our public school band (John Buchan Sr PS) played for her.

Btw, see the sign on the crazy store that says: 'sober drivers Puck much better' ?

for a while, when he first painted it, the P in Puck was an F. He must have been forced to change it.

Prior to the current signage, there was similar stuff that really put the boots to the politcal figures of the mid '90's. in the same vein.

Charlatan 02-08-2006 01:37 PM

Game on Leto... I wasn't there for the actual opening but I was there many times right after: skating, summer dnaces, looking at the fish, checking out Register, etc... and going to the Town Centre.

Charlatan 02-08-2006 03:28 PM

I am looking for both the location and the name of the object:

Bossnass 02-08-2006 05:04 PM

Between the CN Tower and the Skydome. On Blue Jays Way, west of the SkyDome.

I think its just called the Chinese Rail Monument.

I've never been, but a doctor who my wife knows had a "thistlewood" design built for them in Canmore. I saw a portfolio type brochure when we stopped by there in November. I recognized the structure right away, then had to find the company online.

Charlatan 02-08-2006 05:53 PM

The location isn't exact but it's close enough (it's on the other side of the Skydome from the CN Tower).

Game on!!

Lucifer 02-09-2006 08:04 AM

when I first saw this, for some reason I thought: The Frank Slide in Alberta.

splck 02-09-2006 04:55 PM

No, not near Dawson Creek or Frank.
It's on the South West coast.

Leto 02-09-2006 08:22 PM

on the sunshine coast?

splck 02-10-2006 08:22 AM

No, not the Sunshine coast, but it's somewhat close.

Leto 02-10-2006 03:19 PM

is it on the island? could it be Pt Alberni?

splck 02-10-2006 04:46 PM

It's not on an island or the Sunshine coast.

Leto 02-10-2006 06:23 PM

One more...

Leto 02-10-2006 09:01 PM

okay.... low relief, meandering river, moutains fairly close by, really close to the southwest coast, small town visible...

Squamish??

splck 02-10-2006 09:28 PM

yes, but what's the notable landmark?

Leto 02-10-2006 09:50 PM

damned if i know. It was hard enough getting the location!

** edit:

okay, a quick google yielded this land mark:

http://gsc.nrcan.gc.ca/urbgeo/vanrock/chief_e.php

The Chief: Pillar of Granite
The great grey cliffs of Stawamus Chief Mountain, locally known as "the Chief", are famous landmarks in the Squamish area. Rock climbers from around the world test their abilities on its vertical granite walls. Granitic rocks are ancient pools of melted rock that crystallized to rock kilometres below the surface. Tremendous uplift of the land coupled with continuous erosion over millions of years has brought these deeply buried rocks to the surface.

Could that possibly be it?

splck 02-10-2006 10:40 PM

You got it...the Chief is a great place to stop while driving hwy 99. Climbers are little specks on the granite.
Pictures don't do it justice.

Leto 02-11-2006 03:57 AM

Ouimet Canyon?

Edit: Definately. In fact I have damn near the same photo, from when I was there in August.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/119_1901.jpg

From Wikipedia, about the legend of the canyon:

Quote:

A long time ago, there was a giant Omett. He helped Nanabijou make mountains and lakes. Omett fell in love with Nanabijou's daughter Naiomi. One day, Omett was moving a mountain when part of it fell off and killed Naiomi. Omett quickly hid Naiomi. Nanabijou desperately looked for his daughter. When he sensed something underground, he sent a thunderbolt to split open the ground which created a canyon and he discovered his daughter at its bottom. He buried her there and to punish Omett he turned him into stone and put him on the canyon walls to watch Naiomi's grave forever.
Here's a picture of me from the other direction to prove it. :p

And yes, I do have the same pic from the other direction. I'll scan/post it later!
