Canada Bashing On American Dominated Forums
Lately in the last 6 months or so Ive noticed a pretty large jump in the Canadian bashing that goes on in forums where there are predominently American members.
I recently posted on a car forum about wanting to go for a drive during my holidays down the east coast of the United States to go and visit my mother who lives in Florida. The thread started fine but then it quickly went south (no pun intended). It started off when I said I could drive from Ontario to Florida in 18 hours, which Ive done before. Here are some responces that I got to that, "Your car cant make it there in that time it would take 20 hours at least." that was a fine response, but then it went to this. "What do you expect he is Canadian?" "We dont want you in Florida stay in Canada" "Dont worry Canadians are so stupid he wouldnt be able to find Florida if he tried anyways" and other similar responces. Ive also noticed this in other threads Ive participated in and started with varying subjects on a few forums. I try to do my best to voice my concerns about their views on Canada because they have no backing on any of their "facts", but it seems that Canada bashing has become some sort of fun online pasttime for American members. Im not saying they are all like this but I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this and if you have what have you done about it? Thanks CRX Forum |
Can't say that I've noticed Canada-bashing, per se. However, my advice would be to just let the idiots have their fun & don't feed into it.
Aside from talking a little funny (I JEST  ), Canadians are some of the nicest people overall I've met. The plain truth of the situation is that Floridians would be hurting without the Canadian tourist dollar...and if that type of treatment became widespread, the idiots perpetrating it would probably be out of work & back in their parents' basements...if they've left by now. |
I often find a troll or two kicking around, who want to start something, but largely, things are cool.
|
Remember folks, that the TFP is different. If you get a response like that, you just press the little triangle on the bottom left of the post that says REPORT BAD POST and explain that you were insulted by this post.
I can't help you on other boards. That is why I stay very close to home (TFP); I have been burned other places. I had to look up what STFU N00b meant. And yes, Florida would not just be hurt if the Canadian tourist dollar vanished. They would be 6 feet under in a cheap, federally purchased plywood box. |
I don't see how Americans and Canadians can bash each other when they are so alike. Hell, people that aren't from either country often have trouble telling us apart.
Can't we all just get along? :) |

You canuckistani's are unique - -just like everyone else :) Canuckistani's actually have mapleleaf birthmarks on their bums... ask to see 'em... Most of 'em are happy to show you... Right Fly? :D |

Here comes Flyman's Fucking Ass again. And just when I thought that this regional forum could remain virginal and pure, like us Canadians. BTW, the national Birthmark is not always on the posterior. Mine, for instance, is halfway down the shaft of my penis, about 7 inches down. I hear that Newfie birthmarks are found on male scrotums, on the same side as their undescended testicle. Female Newfies have their birthmark hidden, and are only visible after consuming 26 ounces of swish. Just some Canadian factoids. Have a great day! |

One of the other forums I post on used to be VERY anti Canadian, but with the rise of several prominent male members and a male mod, that has changed slightly recently... you'll still find canada bashing, but really, not nearly as bad as before.

how could anyone pick on canadians... y'all have the best looking beefcake... I could sit there all day and just daydream about the beefcakiness... :)
you send those meanies my way and I'll set 'em straight.. :) |

My ex and I had a discussion or two on this very subject, since I'm Canadian and she's American. Most of our ribbing was good natured (she'd say something about the metric system, to which I'd respond with something to the effect of 'crazy Yanks) but once in a while we'd sit down and talk seriously about why there's such a big rift. The conclusion we came to is that Canadians think Americans want us to be like them and Americans think Canadians are high and mighty. So Canadians go about finding ways to assert their independence from our neighbours to the south and the Americans get offended by it and retaliate.
So there you have it. |
As an United Stateser, I can say that it's a combination of two things: jelousy, and dumb kids who still quote the South Park movie. I love Canada, and have plenty of Canadian friends.
|
Um...where's the Canadian bashing threads? Or posts?
Even if there was, it would've been deleted by the mods |
I think that he means in other forums. We all know that (aside from the occasional blasting of our health care and liberal politics) the Americans on this forum are the best! (especially all you beautiful cheesecake!)

canadian bashing happens all over the world.
even in Canada american bashing happens all over the world. even in the states imho nationalism is so stupid, goes in the same boat as sexism, racism etc... what it is, I want to be the best... Ill take hockey for example.... 1on1 (ok lame game but just think, same goalies) male vs female - I would want a male to win since im male black vs white - I would want a white to win since im white canada vs USA - i would want USA to win since im from there canada vs Russia - I would want canada to win since im half canadian and live here. the examples could go on, its just the way it is, even if it was a blonde hair vs red hair game, I would want the blondes to win since im blonde its all stupid, its just the way it seems to be though. |
Don't think of them as AMERICAN bashers, think of it as BASHERS who also happen to be American.
We've recently seen a Basher who happened to be European. See? They come in all flavors and they all are silly. |

Bashers are bashers... Don't feed the trolls. |
Well being on both sides of the fence ( American born and raised and moved to Ontario ), I am able to see both sides. I love the United States and I love Canada. Anyone that wants to bash someone else on the basis they are from the other side of an imaginary line is ignorant and deserves to live alone in their miserable little world. Now, that said, who is going to Timmy's with me. :D

Who doesn't like a little bashing every once in a while?
Monty Python said it best, in The Life of Brian: BRIAN: Are you the Judean People's Front? REG: Fuck off! BRIAN: What? REG: Judean People's Front. We're the People's Front of Judea! Judean People's Front. Cawk. FRANCIS: Wankers. BRIAN: Can I... join your group? REG: No. Piss off. BRIAN: I didn't want to sell this stuff. It's only a job. I hate the Romans as much as anybody. PEOPLE'S FRONT OF JUDEA: Shhhh. Shhhh. Shhh. Shh. Shhhh. REG: Schtum. JUDITH: Are you sure? BRIAN: Oh, dead sure. I hate the Romans already. REG: Listen. If you really wanted to join the P.F.J., you'd have to really hate the Romans. BRIAN: I do! REG: Oh, yeah? How much? BRIAN: A lot! REG: Right. You're in. Listen. The only people we hate more than the Romans are the fucking Judean People's Front. P.F.J.: Yeah... JUDITH: Splitters. P.F.J.: Splitters... FRANCIS: And the Judean Popular People's Front. P.F.J.: Yeah. Oh, yeah. Splitters. Splitters... LORETTA: And the People's Front of Judea. P.F.J.: Yeah. Splitters. Splitters... REG: What? LORETTA: The People's Front of Judea. Splitters. REG: We're the People's Front of Judea! LORETTA: Oh. I thought we were the Popular Front. REG: People's Front! C-huh. FRANCIS: Whatever happened to the Popular Front, Reg? REG: He's over there. P.F.J.: Splitter! |
I think we Canadians are entirely too sensitive about the whole issue. I am included in that. We're always looking for ways to make ourselves look better than the Americans. Lately it hasn't been hard. We keep looking for ways to get the upper hand. I think with the fresh drinking water (see last weeks issue of Macleans Magazine) we'll finally have something on them.
We'll always have the inferiority complex, so we just have to learn to live with it. |
i agree Daoust, Don't we have better things to do than to keep worrying about what other people think of us???? I mean, really. I've got stuff to do!
|
Im not going to say I have not had my fun with Americans. I mean I made a thread wishing everyone a happy thanks giving. Then the majority of the website asked what was going on since we have Thanksgiving before them. Then some asked what the differences were between Canadian and American thanksgiving. I said it was the same except Canadians go out on anual poal bear hunts as a joke. The American members bought into it and I had my fun and other Canadians joined in on it. It was hilarious. But other than that Ive never done anything hurtful towards them or anything making malicious remarks about them which seems to be a popular thing to do nowadays online.
I even have a "1-800-USA-ARMY" window sticker on my car. Why are they so sinical about Canadians? CRX Forum |

lots of Canada bashing. It's encouraged, so I try to take up the challange, to a point. Just search Canada and you will see |

Another one for a good laugh is http://www.pro-american.com/forums/cmps_index.php they don't think very highly of Canada either, it's a conservative site, although they deny it and other opinions aren't encouraged they're banned. Thats what makes TFP so great, all opinions are welcomed and encouraged. |

you know it sweetheart........... don't worry Ben.......it's too cold to drop trow right now. |

They have a warning level. I am at 2 out of 5 for merely posting jabs at George Bush. You can argue their points usually, but if you redicule their point of view, you are in trouble. I like rightnation for the simple reason the people there are so unbelievably different from me and my peers, it's fascinating. Most are the fire and brimstone conservative types, so it's easy to get a rise out of them. I personally don't know anyone who thinks that abortion, and guns, and gay rights are the most important election issues for example. There are a few Canadians on there too. |
The simple answer? It's because we're neighbours.
This sort of thing isn't just confined to our two countries. The same thing happens between Belgium and France, New Zealand and the Australia, China and Japan, and many other countries. Think of it like living with a roommate for several hundred years, and you start to see why there is some animosity. I'm just happy we don't have a relationship like Israel and its neighbours do. Besides, do these people who flame either side (we burn the Americans just as much as they burn us) have the gall to state their opinions face to face? I doubt it. Leave them in their protective coccoon, surrounded by anonimity, and recognize them for the cowards they are. |
Those americans are just jealous. Don't worry about it.
Canadians have more freedoms and it's pissing them off. Our beer tastes better, our pot is more potent and our women are better looking. If I lived down there like my two brothers and my sister, I'd be pissed too. |

I love Canadians so much I want to be one...good beer, hockey, All-Dressed Ruffles, AND I'd get to live in the same country as some of my favourite men ;) |

I don't actually agree that we are too sensitive about it, nor do we have an inferiority complex. I think we are finally standing up for ourselves, showing some national pride, and thumping our chests about it a little bit.. and I think that kinda pisses some of the Americans off. For years, chest thumping was, quite frankly, the domain of America. They had it all. Now, they don't... we have a some of it. It's like the kid whose mother tells him he has to share his ice cream with the neighbour kids - he's sullen, pissed off, and starts to call the neghbour kids doody-heads. Meanwhile, the neighbour kids are LOVING their ice cream, and telling others how good it is. I always get a chuckle when I hear "The Canadians want to be just like us".. as a people, we ARE just like them. As a nation... I want nothing to do with the (current) US brand of politics and media. I'm quite happy - and PROUD - to be a Canadian. |
Cheers! Even though you are most likely a Flames fan... I stand with you in solidarity.
|
I imagine it's at least in part due to the American bashing that is ever-popular with people. A lot of Canadians, lacking a distinct cultural identity, identify themselves by being "like Americans, but better" so there's probably some kind of backlash among the prouder Americans (Americans? Proud? Well I never...).
P.S. While it's good to like the country in which you live, I hate nationalism and patriotism and they can go fornicate with each other for all I care. |
You know....
I was just watching world junior hockey between USA and Russia and it's amusing how the Canadian fans are cheering for the Russians ;) In fact, whenever the Americans play, we always cheer for the other guys whether it'll be Finland, Sweeden, Czech, etc etc Hell, even fans in other countries usually cheer for the other team that involves USA :D |
