pats hands down. i love the dave atell where he gets people to chant "Geno's Sucks". Spent many cold nights at 2AM getting some pat's. Miss that like crazy!

I miss Pat's as well. There is nothing better than a cheesesteak from there all drunk at 2-3 in the morning.

Their cheese fries are pretty damn good as well.

I went to undergrad in Philly (1987-1991), and never made it to either. There was a great lunch truck on our campus, but it is gone now. I always liked the pizza steak (provolone, onions, tomato sauce).

There's actually two of them, one at Roosevelt Blvd & Comly, just by Byberry (which I've never actually been to) and the my local one (the original), at Bustleton & St. Vincent (very close to Bustleton & Cottman).

The difference with Steve's is that they don't chop their steak, you get whole strips of sirloin. Some people think this is an abberation, but its damn good. Their rolls are incredible too. A bit of a ways away from Pat's and Geno's but if you're in the northeast is doesn't get any better.

Now if we could just get a good steak or hoagie in Cleveland... anyone know of anything that comes close? I find the biggest problem are the rolls--they just don't have the "chew" you get on the east coast.

Very solid hoagies and they "deliver" out of state. Can't do the steak though...

I have to agree with the Steve's vote (Roosevelt location-only one I've been to)...Pat's, though, if I had to get all Frank Rizzo-y and go to South Philly.

It's something in the water, same reason why you can't get a good bagel outside of New York City...

I live in San Antonio, & we have 2 places.
The first is Texadelphia & the food is worse than the name.
The 2nd is a place that Malik Rose (who plays for the Spurs, but is originaly from philly) opened up, but I haven't been yet heard its ok though.

Anyone ever done the trifecta? A cheesesteak from Pat's and Geno's and a dozen clams from Sam's Clams? Only the drunkest can pull this off.

I'm interested in making a dark chocolate cheesecake, and it will be the first time I have ever made a cheese cake. This seemed like a good thread to ask for tips, recipes or anything else that may help in this pursuit. Thanks!

I need to try this... anyone know a similar UK available product the same as cheez whiz? I imagine kraft should have the same product just probablly differently named... shed light people, shed light!

Cheesesteak -

Take one hoagie - bread is very key, nice and soft but not too moist that the cheese and beef juice makes it soggy
Add thinly sliced beef
Add diced onions, if you choose
Top it off with cheese - the best as mentioned above is Cheeze Whiz - which is melted cheese goodness! Pat's buys theirs in cans, look like paint cans. If anyone knows an easy way to obtain cheese whiz please let me know!

Can add mushrooms, salt, pepper, ketchup, peppers...some add marinara sauce and make pizze steak hoagies. All this can be done with chicken as well!

Final result - the greatest meal ever...well, that and chicken fried steak!

I think Cheeze Whiz is disgusting. I'd give it a whirl if it had some real cheeze on it.

I was born and raised outside of Philly. Its pretty much common knowledge that Pat's and Geno's are not 'real' cheesesteaks, but rather tourist trap type places that mass produce the sandwhiches. You can tell that by the two foot high pile of meat they have piled up waiting to make sandwhiches with...yech! If you want a real cheesesteak, the most famous place is probably Jim's on South St. I MUCH prefer the mom-and-pop type places that make them TO ORDER. And cheese whiz is disgusting. Any decent cheesesteak should have freshly melted american.

i like jims on south street but only---only--when they are busy.
mushroom/provolone cheesesteak with roasted chilis and mayo on the side.

i dont like either pats or genos. for me, it's not the piles of meat: it's the flies.

Hey. I love Jim's as well. It is definitely a very good cheesesteak and is second only to Pat's. It is true that one can only truly appreciate Pat's in an absolute drunken stupor at 4 in the morning, freezing in the Philly wind. If you are wanting a cheesesteak for lunch or dinner, I will agree with Jim's. Also, I know plenty of Philly natives who swear by Pats!

Oh, and you dont have to get it with only Cheeze whiz, the sandwich is very good with Provolone or American cheese as well!

I did Geno's, Pat's & Jim's within 30 minutes of each other via taxi cabs. The next day I was riding septa to our client's site and my stomach hurt like never before. I was keeling over in pain and couldn't wait to get to a bathroom.

Not from Philly, but IMHO a cheesesteak is best with provolone. Never did care for Whiz much.

i'm from NY so i've never had a cheesesteak..never wanted to ether..but damn Averett..that picture looks like cooked bugs or something...*brrr* liek i always thought it was a steak with cheese just on top...but its like what chopped or something?
