Corn on the cobb in electric steamer - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Dave and I got an electric steamer when we got married...2 years later I've just started using it and its fantastic for veggies.....I'd like to try corn on the cobb in it and its the ONE veggie thats not in the book to tell me how long to do it for, it tells me for frozen cut corn, but not fresh.

I've googled and read a few people do it for about 10-15 minutes but I dont know which setting to use.

Anyone out there that does this that can advise?

I'd say start with 7 minutes and move up from there...

I agree Shani, they are fantastic for veggie's, you can get them a perfect crisp tender (as we prefer) with experimentation. I'd be lost without my B&D Handy Steamer for rice too. Since we moved into our house I haven't found my cookbooks and manuals but I checked my steamers (B&D and Oster).

My Oster has a pic of corn on the cob with 25-30 min. for the time. I googled my Handy Steamer manual and it says 29-33 min. with the cobs cut to fit and stood on end in the bowl/basket.

That said, I'd have to go with Charlatan, those times seem like you'd end up with mush even though the steamers do take a few minute's to get up a head of steam.

I'd start conservative on the time and check for your preferred doneness. I haven't tried corn yet because I usually grill it when it's in season, so I don't have experience steaming it.

I don't know what you mean by what setting to use. Both of mine just have a timer knob you dial to the required amount of time for the food cooked. Maybe yours is digital and/or has more bells and whistles?

I guess it does the same job. We haven't ever done corn in it, though. I'd go with Charlatan too - I guess it depends how you like your corn - personally I prefer it a bit crunchy - usually we boil it for 3-5 minutes.

I cant stand mushy corn, it has to be really crunchy for me...that said 10 minutes is perfect!!! I usually grill too...but sometimes Im just not in the mood to mess with it so last nite I threw fresh cauliflower in it for 20 minutes, and when it got down to 10 I put two ears of corn in.....perfect perfect perfect, it was just the way it is when I grill it. happy dancing all around!!

Ali, I have the B&D Flavor Steamer Plus....its not digi, it just has the dial on the front for the time (and a user guide that names every veggie you can think of BUT Cobbed corn hmph)

I see Shani, you just meant "time" setting. We have essentially the same steamer then, only mine is an older model (10+ yrs) hand-me-down and doesn't have the divider insert or the "flavor" whatchamicallit.

Glad you reported back on the 10 min. timing, now I have to try some corn too. I always boil it indoors and it loses nutrients that way. Thanks!

That's funny Shani, I made hotdogs in mine for the first time last week. I was at the grocery looking for pepper rings when I notice right in front of my face, sport peppers and neon green pickle relish. I've never had a Chicago dog before but when DH goes through O'hare for work, he gets them and loves 'em.

I was so excited to be able to make them at home for him that I went online and looked up all the specifics. Seems they are commonly boiled or steamed so of course I went with steamed. They turned out fantastic but I was mostly floored by finally figuring out how to steam the buns without them turning to mush. You turn them upside down and place them over the dogs for the last two minutes of steaming. Perfect! No more microwaved buns that turn to rubber in 30 secs for me!

Hope yours turned out good too.

I steam in a wire basket in my larget saucepan.

Us europeans have tiny houses, so I'm not a fan of gadgets that I can replicate more easily.
